Quote from: Richard on 17 July, 2023, 01:49:02 PMSlaves of the Abyss is a brilliant book! Looking forward to your full write-up, if you do one.

Also I've just discovered that Usborne has started a line of new gamebooks; four of them so far. They look pretty good. (Aimed at ages 9+ so might be too easy, but still, I'm glad they exist.)

Played one of these, Shadow Chaser, it was good fun. Fast paced and with some more child-friendly puzzles here and there using illustrations, but it was an intriguing adventure and it didn't feel too simplistic or childish in the writing. Maybe slightly younger than FF, sure, but I wouldn't say the choices you have to make are obvious or anything. I still got killed so will need another go at some point! I have a second one, Curse Breaker, waiting for a first play through too.

Quote from: Dash Decent on 15 July, 2023, 10:44:34 AMYes, except the figure will be lying rigidly like he's got rigor mortis.  And in uniform.  Perhaps Dredd in a Sleep Machine?

(Those are the same pyjamas he's wearing in my avatar.)

If you sat him up you could recreate the story 'In the Bath'.

Quote from: dan200 on 09 July, 2023, 12:12:24 AMLooks like Case Files 43 contains every 2000AD story up to and including the Origins lead-in story "The Connection", and most of the Megazine stories that were published during Origins. This sets up Case Files 44 to contain Origins in its entirety!

Beautiful!

Like a lot us I'm tempted by this, and like a lot of us Nemesis is a series
I've acquired quite a few versions of, although for me the last ones were the phonebooks. I do have quite a few Titan editions though too. I'm not usually one for buying multiple versions of a story I've already got... got to wonder if this will really enhance my experience of the strip enough to justify buying this than something I've never read before. But they sure look nice.

Always love seeing a new Case File announced!

Books & Comics / Re: Bargains and deals

Quote from: Third Estate Ned on 30 June, 2023, 10:16:21 PMThanks for highlighting these FP bargains. I'd kind of given up on comics but seeing the Light and Darkness War reminded me of an anthology that it was collected in that I had a few issues of, may have been called Meltdown. Within was something that has remained in my mind ever since, as my tiny brain could make no sense of it at the time. And here it is for a fiver in hardback:

https://forbiddenplanet.com/152692-the-adventures-of-cholly-flytrap-hardcover/

I had one issue of Meltdown and it had a 'next issue - Cholly and Flytrap' advert but I never got any more issues so have no idea what that strip was, but the name has always stayed with me!

Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

Love and Rockets is my favourite comic alongside 2000ad. It's wonderful. I prefer Jaime's stuff too, Gilbert's is wilder and more difficult in places, although I still love all the Palomar stuff. Some of the stories are absolutely brilliant. I've found his more recent output much trickier to get into, and even to categorise, but at this point he can do what he likes really. Jaime's Locas stories, still ongoing, probably constitutes my favourite work of fiction in any medium. I've had friends who couldn't get into the earliest stuff and it's definitely all over the place to start with but I started at the beginning and seeing in develop and continue developing is a fantastic journey.

By contrast I tried Strangers in Paradise book 1, years ago now, but found it really annoying. I'd never thought of contrasting it with L&R and don't want to put anyone off trying it, people love it, I just found the tone of it quite irritating.

Quote from: michaelarby on 07 June, 2023, 09:42:27 PMIs button man a good read? I'm cherry picking this last extension but it seems to already be far better quality than the last.

Zenith was a decent read - recognised a lot of familiar 'grant morrison-isms' that would appear in invisibles.

Just had Kingdom V3 and the new Dredd arrive through the door. Kindgom was one of my favourite discoveries of the whole UC so glad were getting a finale(?).

Yeah, Button Man is a top series. What else is included in the third Kingdom book?

Quote from: Richard on 06 June, 2023, 10:40:16 PMI googled the art for that book and it looks amazing!

Planning to try it out tomorrow so we'll see how it goes. The interior art is lovely. I hadn't heard of the series but my wife did some research before buying it for me and apparently it is rated quite highly by those in the know. I assumed you folks would know all about it!

I've had one go at Blood of the Zombies and also found it pretty tedious. The only thing I really remember (I think) is being blown up by a grenade I had thrown, and being kind of relieved.

I haven't posted in this thread for a while but wanted to mention that the three books you sent me have all been played, Barrington, and thoroughly enjoyable they are too. Even Scorpion Swamp was better than I remember!

I also wanted to mention that my wife gave me a present this year of a game book in a series called Bloodsword, with the incredible title The Battlepits of Krarth, a reprint of an 80s series, which looks pretty good! And artwork by the great Russ Nicholson too. Looking forward to giving it a go.

Quote from: nxylas on 31 May, 2023, 05:35:54 PMAlso in the Millsverse, I never knew what "nogeee" meant in the Terra-Meks, and I still don't. One of the titular Terra-Meks had it as its catchphrase, as I recall.

Absolutely. Never had any idea if this meant anything or was just an insane Terra-Mek thing.

Is it Satanus – emphasis on on first syllable, as in Satan?
or:
Satanus – emphasis on on second syllable, as in satanic?

Stop whatever it was you were doing. This is important.

Second one for me.

I was collecting those Shade books too. Shame they stalled.
