: Does My Figure look big in this?
: Trooper McFad 09 April, 2021, 09:48:10 PM
To all Squaxx
Using inspiration from the “Does my Art look big in this?” thread
I think that all of us enthusiastic amateur sculptures/model makers deserve a thread to show their creativity and imagination.

Having only been on the board a relatively short time compared to some it’s not easy to find others creations. But they are out their - Shaolin 👍🏻.

So no matter how long ago it was done, if anyone has pics of unique creations either changed from shop bought kits, action figures or ambitious “built from scratch” figures please post here for all to find under one banner.
(a few details on how it was done would be great hopefully give me tips on future characters)

I’ll start it off with the ones I did over the last year. My latest creation should be finished in about a week and I believe it’s above my “normal” standards

No directly 2K stuff here, but I do have a Thrud that's modeled after Carl Critchlow's character design (so, a link) - the model is not modified, only painted - but I did the base myself:

And this is a Slaine mini I bought pre-painted in Moniave a while back:

(I did model the base of the terrain he's standing on - a cobbled path which you can't see from this angle.)

Loving the Thrud - I was a big fan back in the White Dwarf days, but for some reason never knew (or forgot till now) that it was Carl Critchlow

Sorry about the size and the lack of photo shoot styling but here you go.

There are more here:https://imgur.com/user/usernumber34257/posts

The hand at the bottom of the pedestal is supposed to be glued down at the name but I accidentally knocked it off when I was dusting it ... which is why I haven't dusted it since.

I'm sorry to disappoint you gentlemen, but I have hammer hands that break everything they touch so, I was in no way involved in the creation of this magnificent piece.

It doesn’t matter how you got it as long as you enjoy it.

I have an idea of doing a Death being captured in a “suction trap” with Anderson looking on - just got to find a cheap kit to manipulate.
: Re: Does My Figure look big in this?
: Rara Avis 15 April, 2021, 06:29:22 PM
I love him - every time I pick him up (which isn't that often because I'm afraid I'll break him) I think  'Please, my son ... he's very evil'.

I actually must invest in a brush for dusting - I was going to get a kabuki brush because they are super soft:

How do you dust your figures?
: Re: Does My Figure look big in this?
: Trooper McFad 15 April, 2021, 07:46:46 PM
Not as often as my wife wants me to 😂😂😂
When I do it’s with an ancient feather duster (only has about 4 feathers) but I think I might invest in a similar brush as shown.
: Re: Does My Figure look big in this?
: Rara Avis 15 April, 2021, 08:29:04 PM
I've broken the Judge Death's hand, Nemesis frill and Dredd's (MK-1) Lawgiver while cleaning / posing so I tend to leave them alone.

That brush is £13.50 from M&S but you can get a cheaper one in Primark that will do the job.

Re: your idea for Death suction trap have you considered working with epoxy?

Just an idea - I have absolutely no clue on how you might attempt that.

Btw, I can't believe that sculpture is $800.00.

Almost finished my next figure so should post pics sometime tomorrow.

Smaller scale, but I use a lip brush from Wilko to dust Warhammer-scale models and it works brilliantly. They cost about £1 each.

Well another one finished 😁😁

This one is converted from a “Riddler” Revell kit.
I crossed his leg, moved his arms and gave him a 3 piece suit, brolly & a zany communications device (and a red carnation)
I give you Max Normal
If I hadn't used the graffiti decals from the Dredd minis I would have added some of those to the pole (and I might purchase Letter decals for the "Cab Stop" as I'm not good painting letters)

Enjoy

Weird how his pose looks perfectly natural from some angles (eg #2), but from others looks like he's busting for the loo or dancing the twist (eg #1).

It's been a while but now everything is starting to open up the model making is slowing down(though still got 2 others on the go at the mo)

I'm still hoping some more Squaxx will post their creations and share with the newest board members (including myself) the characters they have created in the past.

Anyway this is my attempt at Marshall Metta Lawson. I used the knock off Anderson kit as my base. changed a few things took away her High Heels!!. Added spares I had left from the Dredd kit and tried my best at making the "shotgun".

I have added a couple of before pics to show how the model takes shape.

Chuffed at her jacket but not so much at her hair but overall I'm happy with the results.

The next ones on the go are a model of my alter ego and a better attempt at one I've already done.

Enjoy

Wow there’s no words that I can add that’s not already been said in that thread. I recommend everyone who’s joined since 2015 to read the whole thread and see the effort and skill put into that build. It is truly at another level to my wee 12” efforts 😂😂😂

I really liked seeing the evolution over the months- I don’t believe it will ever be topped unless you have something else planned?

I hope it doesn’t put off anyone else posting their efforts as if still like to see and possibly learn from others projects. A few good tips I might try and scale down from your thread atp
: Re: Does My Figure look big in this?

Your work on these figures is really great and nicely detailed
Taking a kit of one character and turnng it into a different character  is no easy task, and you have obviously nailed that task.

The poses for the Dredd & Batman figures are great, so unique, very different from the norm. It looks like they have gone head to head until they are both exhausted.
I especially like the Ro-Jaws and Haogy. The position of Hoagy's eyes really bring the  sculpt to life. I would offer one bit of advice, grab a pack of sculpey and scratch build a full figure, you have definitely got the skill to produce some outstanding pieces.
: Re: Does My Figure look big in this?
: Trooper McFad 08 June, 2021, 10:18:18 PM
Thanks for the encouragement atp I think it’s a confidence thing and doing “human” faces is very daunting.

I have a few other conversions I’d like to attempt. The range of kits and what I can do to them is running out so I might just have to have a go 😳

I got the inspiration for the Dredd / Batman from a panel in Judgment in Gotham one of my favourite crossovers. Initially I wanted to go for their fight on top of the Train but that was gonna be too big for the space I have.

Well I thought it would take me longer than it has with other distractions going on but I still found time to mould, craft, cut and sand my latest attempt at a tooth character.
This time it’s my first 1:1 (I think it’s about right?)

Fellow Squaxx I give you Stogie.

When I first saw him in the prog I thought how great having an opinionated talking cigar. I loved him ever since so I had to create my very own.

I used an old toy from a burger chain I had lying about and cut away everything bar the hands, feet and body core. This allowed me to attach the milliput.

It was hard to find many colour references so I went for the one that I liked the most - cigar brown with brass trim.

As with Lawson I’ve posted primed, base coat and a few finished shots. I even used some filter floss from my fish tank supplies as a wee puff of vape.

Hope you enjoy as much as I do.

Well fellow Squaxx I have finally finished what is to date my favourite creation. A GI trooper. (THIS IS NOT ROGUE!)
I have returned to using the revel model of the Riddler for my base.
I actually started his equipment in April whilst finishing Max Normal my other Riddler change over this allowed me to scale the items while waiting for the kit to be delivered.
Making all his wee bits & pieces was fun especially his Helmet.
The base is slate from the garden and a drilled hole represents a near miss!
For this project I experimented with home made decals and for the crappie inkjet I have the results aren’t too bad. (you also need a spray varnish to fix the ink before applying to the model) Though for more detailed decals a better printer that’s a little bit sharper would be preferable.
As per normal now I have pictures of it primed, base coated and then finished.
Hope you agree it ain’t half bad for an amateur who’s getting a bit more ambitious with every project finished.

Enjoy

First a big shout to those fellow Squax budding model makers who still have those projects that they have hidden away for years. Please post on this thread and share this with us your fellow 2K fans.

Anyway now that the Advent has started and I have posted my efforts here are a few more pics.

Details of the project are:

I used the minis from Warlord games (bought extras) and old pine curtain rings that were lying up in the loft.

The Anderson santa hats, string of baubles and tinsel are all made from milliput. (I did look for silver and gold pipe cleaners but couldn't find any).

I prefer the Anderson - I think the hat does it.

I did have another 3 minis to change but time ran out so I will park the for next year.

I'm currently busy with 3 other mash ups at various degrees of completion but with the crimbo holidays about to give me some spare time I should finish at least one.

Anyway have a happy Christmas when it comes.

Enjoy

Happy New Year all Squaxx
Been working on my latest effort off and on since August. With the free time over Christmas and (requested) lockdown up here in Cal-Hab I’ve finally finished my version of “Kill-a-man” Jaroo. Who goes nicely with my Marshal Lawson as you will see below.

Jaroo was modelled from a toy “King Kong” bought off eBay and after a few adjustments to its stance, adding a waistcoat, hat, goggles and a shed load of hair around the fore arms and feet I was happy with the results. I again used my goto medium of milliput.

As usual I have posted pictures of Jaroo primed, base coated and finished. To give the scale of the two figures I have photographed them together and I think I have pretty much lucked out as they look good together. Sorry for all the pics.

I have 3 other projects slowly on the go so I should have them completed throughout the year.

Still waiting on fellow Squaxx to post their creations.

I've just been to the shops and alas there's been a run on 'WOW's due to those, particularly Kill-a-man and I couldn't get any so I'm not able to say 'Wow' here. All I could get was a 'Those are incredible' so that will have to do.

Those are incredible!

Since the shops are out of WOW (from the makers of BOING I presume), I googled synonyms we could use here, I think they all apply! Synonyms:hooray, yippee, excellent, lovely, happily, good for/on someone, hallelujah, good, thank goodness/heaven(s)

So good on you Trooper, excellent work, those are lovely!

Thanks guys for the kind comments. It’s good that others can appreciate the characters brought to a 3D format. In my house they are just looked upon as dust gathers 😂😂😂.

I’m quickly running out of space so have to think carefully when picking my next characters or I’ll have to move some on or my boy out so I can get my own man cave.

Great work on the Lawless models.

I do like to convert miniatures, and nearly all of mine are Games Workshop kit (classic Warhammer and 40K). I hate the idea of two models in a squad being identical, so I do conversions to make them unique. I'm really bad at finding big blocks of painting time, though, so most of my work is either pre-undercoat or undercoated and gathering dust. Not the best things to show off - but I enjoy the process of Frankensteining the minis all the same.

I have discovered that over-used blu-tac sort of decomposes over time - becoming both yucky smelling and terribly difficult to remove from the minis.

I too have a stack of Dredd mini’s to paint but doing the small batch for the Christmas tree was fun adding the baubles and Santa hats.
I have the same feeling about having too many figures the same it means that you have to keep things consistent so a wee tweak here and there adds interest.
I’d like to see your tweaks as I’m always looking to pinch others ideas 😁.

This Ork is from one of the older 40K boxed sets, where you got 18 Ork Boyz, but quite a lot of repeating melee weapons, guns and heads. There are three body types, so I set about making sure nobody had the same head, melee weapon or gun. This guy's one of my favorites:

 - The snaggle-tooth head is from an Orc (i.e. the fantasy range).
 - The right arm is from a spear-carrying Orc (I amputated the original Ork arm), but the spear tip was kind of stone age and tied on with twine, so I cut that off and replaced it with a spear-head from the Boar Boyz kit, which looks a bit more modern. Orks tend to go with big blades, axes and chainsaws - but I liked the idea of a mad throwback with a spear.
 - The gun has been modified with the dangling ammo-belt, which I think is from a Chaos Marine Rhino sprue. (And I drilled out the gun barrel, of course.)

That’s great Funt.
It’s the ingenuity and imagination used I love. Making mini’s to your own taste makes them more interesting.
I keep all my “cuttings/spares” just Incase I can use them on a future build.
Now you just have to get round to paint them 👍🏻😁.

This guy has the same body as the previous one - he's retained his original right arm, but I cut off his hand so I could give him a different weapon. His gun has been modified with a chainsaw attachment (looted from a Space Marine) - if his chainsaw gets stuck in some tough enemy, he can just shoot them to bits. Then stab them.

Well it’s been a wee while since I completed my last figure.
But I’ve been a busy little bee working on 4 different figures at one time! The reason for this is I was using sculpty for the first time and it’s wonderful stuff. But I didn’t want to bake just one piece at a time. So I sculpted a couple of figures and add on bits for another couple I’ve been working on with milliput and are half finished so it made sense to do a batch baking to cure the sculpty.
First up is my version of the Gronk.
As always I have supplied “primed”, “base” and “finished” photos.
I hope to have the next figure done in a couple of weeks.

Thanks- he is rather lonely though so I will need to give him a pal (or SD) but not sure who - I’m not doing Jonny but a McNulty or Wulf would be a good challenge eventually

Well it’s a couple of days late but here’s my latest attempt at brining another tooth character into the 3D world.
This one as per my Gronk attempt was entirely made out of skulpty (apart from the filler for the gap’s when I put him together)
I also used the flexible part of a little clip on lamp for his arms which gives interest in posing him differently now and again.
I’ve enjoyed playing with sculpty and will go back to it but I must finish my next 12 inch character which I’ve been adding to,carving and sanding into shape off and on for 8 months now 😳.
Hopefully when you squint your eyes he’s recognisable as Dredd’s pain in the arse Walter the Wobot.

Enjoy
