I'm sorry to inform you all that Tom passed away this morning, at 7AM, on the 14th of July.
His son was with him at his side.
Tom was a truly lovely man, a real character, a great friend to many of our favourite Artists and Writers, and one of our longest serving Droids.
It'd be really nice if we could acknowledge his often unsung contribution to our favourite Comicbook.
A letter to the Nerve Centre perhaps...
I'll try and help arrange a tribute to this Comic Great in the proceeding week.
Good bye Tom, see you at the bar.
Rufus
Aw shit, that's really sad. I did not so long ago write a letter to the Meg when they were doing their articles on artists and writers asking if they could do one on Tom, who I thought was a bit of an unsung hero - but it obviously never happened.
He definately deserves some sort of tribute, though. Well done Rufus.
Aw, no. That's terrible news, Rufus. His part in the prog may have seemed trivial, but I - and I suspect many other readers - always appreciated his contribution to 2000AD.
Hopefully his passing will be noted by Tharg & Co., and if you have any contact with his family, please let them know how much his work was appreciated.
That's very sad news :(
I have fond memories of meeting him in the pub at Dreddcon 3.
Sorry to hear this, don't know what else to say....
Jeez. That is very sad. Not someone you automatically think of when listing the greats, yet seeing his name in the credits week in, week out for as long as I can remember was always kind of reassuring.
My thoughts are with his family.
Very sad
That's really sad news, condolences to Tom's family and friends.
- Steve
Both time I met him twice he was very friendly - a charming man to talk to. He must have worked on more pages than any other single creator in the history of 2000AD - many more of course than the 278 he is currently credited for on this site.
No one lives for ever but that doesn't stop us wishing.
Wake
What awful, sad news. I never met Mr Frame but did read a couple of short interviews with him and he seems to have been a lovely man. As Mike Collins once said:
"Tom's no-nonsense, finely spaced, tall text is as much a part of Mega City One's environment as Dredd's helmet or badge."
That should stand as his memorial here.
Aw hell.
I'd noticed that annie was lettering Dredd for the last few weeks and wondered if tom was just enjoying a long earned holiday. Never would I have expected this.
Very sorry to read this news.
Tom is a massive part of the history of 2000ad and an irreplacable talent.
Bolt-01
Condolences to his family.
Aww no. If someone could please pass my condolences to his family, i'd appreciate it. He was as much a part of 2000AD as Dredd himself.
It sounds like a bad pun considering, but i am speechless.
This is really sad.
Tom Frame was as much a part of 2000AD and especially Dredd and I consider him to be as much a part of the creation of the character as Esquerra and Wagner.
I remember the pictures that Ian Gibson(?) drew of the droids and T Frame was playing snooker with a T-frame straight edge rule and ever since I always imagined him looking like that.
He was as much a part of my 'growing up with comics' as all the other artists and writers and was, in a way, quite an enigma and a highly skilled draughtsman who, although not in the limelight, was part of the foundation of 2000AD and will always be considered by me to be the best letterer I've ever had the pleasure to read.
God bless and my thoughts are with his family.
"Tom's no-nonsense, finely spaced, tall text is as much a part of Mega City One's environment as Dredd's helmet or badge."
That should stand as his memorial here."
Here here. Couldnt agree more.
Shame. Nothing much to add really- like most people here, I suppose, I used to think that he lettered *everything* in 2000ad at one time.
This is unbelievably sad news. From my memories of him at Dreddcon, he seemed a lovely chap, who took being mercilessly ambushed by Trouty et al really well.
Professionally, and being completely honest, Tom's is the only lettering I've ever been able to instantly recognise. He really was a true master of his art and he will be sorely missed.
My most heartfelt condolencies to all his family.
I'm saddened to hear that. Condolances to his family.
Aw, shite...
A great shame. Condolences to his family.
Lettering is one of those things that it's easy to ignore or assume "just happens", but bad lettering can really trash a comics page. Tom Frame did a great job in never letting that happen.
What sad news. Lettering is such an important and unappreciated element of any comic books, and it can make or break a story for me. For example, some of the Ultimates stuff has appalling lettering, which massively distracts. Tom's, on the other hand, was some of the best I've ever seen, and he will be missed.
At the very least, it would be good to have a very prominent block in an upcoming Dredd named "Tom Frame block"?it's the least 2000 AD can do, really.
Sympathy to his family.
Sorry to hear that, and it's sad that I can't expand on it more than others have already. My condelences to his family.
Very sad to hear the news, just as I was very sad not to have met him at Dreddcon 3. I've always been a big fan of his lettering and he sounded like a great chap.
Had the pleasure of meeting Tom at a 2000 AD christmas party and on a couple of other occasions and he always seemed happy to talk about what he did.
Before meeting him this is how I thought of him and probably always will
R.I.P. Tom
This is a sad day for 2000AD, and comics in general. Condolences to his family.
Never met him so that Star Pin Up was how I imagined him as well.
My sincere condolences to the family
RIP Tom
Condolences to Tom's family and friends.
His name will be missed in the credit boxes, even if the technology took away some of the art of his artform.
Sad news indeed.
I wonder if he'll live on in technological form... a font based on his hand-lettering exists.
Shit, that's terrible news.
There's not much I can add to the comments above, but I'm glad that his family were with him at the end. I found this by Alan Donald, that sums up why Tom Frame was so loved and respected much better than I ever could:
"For decades Mr Frame has delivered the goods for 2000AD and I feel he deserves a hell of a lot of recognition for it. I don't know why or how but you can always tell a Tom Frame panel, it reads well, it makes good use of space both to fill the bubble and avoid intruding too much. He is in short an unrecognised genius of the comic book world. I wish I could put my finger on what it is about his work that makes me feel this way towards it but I can't as is perhaps fitting."
Dredd just won't be Dredd without you Tom.
Thanks to Tom for all his hard work for such a long time, and condolences to his family. =(
Gutted. What a shock.
Terrible news - Tom's lettering was as much Judge Dredd as just about anything - the Wagner McMahon and just as crucially Frame combination in the 81 and 82 Dredd annuals have yet to be topped for me - no-one has ever beaten those special effects . I'd noticed that Tom hadn't done this weeks Dredd when i read it, as his style was so unmistakeable and so complimentary to whatever strip he contributed to.
Sincere condolences to the family - For a man whose job it was in some ways to be "invisible", he'll be sorely missed by many a squaxx
Nice one Ratty, ... though you're spelling isn't quite as good as Tom's!!
;-) R
Yeah. Only noticed when I put it up here.
Sorted.
Superb!!!
:-) R
That's terrible news. Lettering is something that gets taken for granted a lot, but Tom Frame's name is as instantly recognisable as Wagner or Ezquerra etc. and he'll be missed greatly.
:-(
Ed
That's shit news, man...
Very sad news
Really, really upset to hear this.
At Dreddcon 3, we hatched a fiendish plan to grab Tom and ask him what his favourite letter was. :-)
In the end, he was a really nice (and drunk) old guy and we just had a quick photo.
It's a nice memory to have and I wish I'd had a proper chat.
Rest in peace, Tom.
- Trout
I don't know why, but the board isn't keen on the pic I'm trying to paste.

Terrible shame. I hope Tharg dedicates an editorial to his memory.
Does anyone know of the funeral arrangements? And does anyone think a fans' wreath would be appropriate? A ?1 each from all the boarders through Paypal would do the job but I doubt we'd have the time to get it done. Any good organisers out there?
That's a shame. I always wanted to the meet the guy on the back of reports of the photo taking as remembered above... and now I never will.
good night Tom we will all miss you.
Logan!
That's the pic!!!
Cheers, takes me back.
Sad news indeed, his sevices to the comic were fantastic. I must say though, I was quite scared of that Tom Frame star scan when I was little - How wrong could I be?
It may be daft but the image I will always have of Tom Frame is of the Droid in the Tharg stories from the early eighties , gruff , sour but not afraid to tell Burt or the Mighty Tharg the truth.
Too many people take Lettering for granted but by god it is an art form in itself and Mr Frame was one of the giants of that Art, 2000ad will never quite feel the same again.
Do you think we ought to arrange some kind of wreath/floral tribute for the funeral?
As far as I know, and please correct me if I'm wrong, Tom is the first of the droids to sadly pass?
Don't know how we'd organise it?
"Too many people take Lettering for granted but by god it is an art form in itself and Mr Frame was one of the giants of that Art, 2000ad will never quite feel the same again."
Agreed. Hand lettering, in particular, is a delicate, subtle art. For me, there were only a handful of letterers whose work enhanced every page they worked on: Todd Klein, Tom Orzechowski, Steve Potter and Tom Frame.
The Frame droid will be much missed. Condolences to his family. I hope they can take some comfort from the affection with which so many fans view his contribution to the Galaxy's Greatest ...
:-(
Jim
sorry to hear about that
Larf, Martin Emond, who drew an episode of Chopper, and John Brosnan, who wrote the Zero series, have also passed away in the last couple of years.
Terrible news. He set the standard and will be sorely missed.
Eric Bradbury too.
If a wreathe can be arranged I'll contribute.
I suspect most people here have a PayPal account, but does anyone know how quick & easy it would be to set one up that we could contribute to?
I think a donation to something like that would be an appropriate and low-key way for fans of his work to mark his passing, provided it can be arranged promptly.
If it's not for a wreathe and there's not a designated charity a collection for a literacy charity seems apt.
Best wishes to Tom's family. Another of the 2000ad greats has gone.
Rob.
I think Tom's family would prefer any donations to go local Hospices, helping families to be with their loved ones.
I'll arrange a wreath on behalf of Squaxx of the World.
:-) Rufus
Then that's what we'll do. The only question now remains whether we make individual donations or set up a communal fund. Like I said, I'd happily donate to any fund or wreathe.
Stick up your Paypal address Rufus and I'll fire you a small contribution - only fair if we're all sharing the card!
One of the greats! An integral part of 2000AD, as long as I can remember. R.I.P Tom
Thanks for arranging that Rufus.
sad news indeed,
my thoughts go to his family & friends.
Don't worry about the money, please donate ANY money to a hospice!!
:-) R
I just heard the news about an hour ago, this is such a drag. Tom was one the best friends you could have if you worked in the industry in the early 80s. He was a man of wit and charm who had quietly become The Pope Of Lettering for an industry, and at times while hanging out in a local pub in Kentish Town after work i often thought if only he'd been my dad.
I hadn't seen him in a age but this is still a sad sad shock.
Sincere condolences to Tom's family
R.I.P Tom
Can I suggest...
Cheers

Tom was an intrinsic part of my favourite comic character, and surely the person most responsible for the voice I hear in my head when I read Judge Dredd. For that, it is sad news indeed.
Rufus, if you could pass on the message to his family that many people who never knew him were touched by his work and will miss his words, I'm sure we'd be grateful.
Cheers,
M@
Sad news,
Tom was indeed an integral part of Judge Dredd / 2000AD. My condolences to his friends and family. He will be sorely missed...
Cheers
Mark
Ive just heard this tragic news, and my thoughts are with Tom's family and friends. For me the perfect creative team will always be Wagner, Ezquerra and Frame.Dredd won't be the same without you Tom.
The Assembly House Pub in Kentish Town (opposite the Bull and Gate and the Forum Venue), is where Tom did much of his work, both lettering and drinking pints of stout.
Many artists used to go and drop work to him there... only to get sucked into Tom/Steve Dillon booze fuelled pool playing.
Dangerous work this, comic books.
:-) R
Cheers for giving us their world in your words.
Let me add my sympathies.
Just heard the news this morning and I thought I'd pop back over to give my condolences to people that knew him, and to say he's been part of my 2000ad reading experience as much as Wagner or Ezquerra. ...and I wonder just how many times he wrote "I am the Law"?
Damn shame we won't be seeing his work on "Origins".
>Damn shame we won't be seeing his work on "Origins".
I second that, would have been great to go out on.
Its a shame, Let's hope that TPO in the Meg acknowledges his input to ever prog
Huff the humbled
This is very, very sad news indeed. Best wishes to his family and friends.
He sounds like hew was a top bloke. His work shall be sorely missed by this particular Squax, that's for sure.
"Damn shame we won't be seeing his work on "Origins"."
Wellll.... Tom had made his lettering into a font... i had been trying to convince him to license it.
Maybe Andy, his son will!
The Assembly House Pub in Kentish Town (opposite the Bull and Gate and the Forum Venue), is where Tom did much of his work, both lettering and drinking pints of stout
His office was the pub!!
That's just brilliant.
Pub fer the office, that's the ticket..
So was Steve's... still is I believe... in Luton.
There are just a few things in life that I have held truly and dearful. The Beatles, Queen and 2000ad. I am gutted that this man has passed on. I have enjoyed his work ever since I was an eleven year old boy and I am truly sorry I have never had the chance to meet him.
Gutted.
"Wellll.... Tom had made his lettering into a font... i had been trying to convince him to license it"
Well, depending on what would be involved, I know it's something I would consider purchasing if it was made available. I've often wanted what I could only describe as a 'tom frame' comic font, tall and thin.
I imagine most professionals use their own design? Though blampot do seem to sell fonts to professionals and companies.
Regardless of whether the font is seen again, his work does of course live on.
Damn Damn shame.
The Assembly house is still there, although I think that the pool table might not be there anymore...
This is terrible news. Tom Frame was a true great of comics, and his lettering showed an attention to detail and craftsmanship that few if any can match. A sad day for Dredd and 2000AD fans.
My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
A man I have never met but who is probably more responsible for my ability to read then any one else on the planet. I also (in a childs way) confused about whay Tharg had a Droid that looked like him. (i was about 8 years old mind)
Good bye Tom and thank you.
Can't really add to any of the tributes.
He will be missed.
one of our finest droids by all accounts,
he was at a dreddcon in recent years i heard.many have mentioned speaking to this undersung hero at the event.
i hope some form of memorial is made in 2000ad.he deserves no less.
a sad passing. though i never met the man, he has in a small way, been part of our lives for so many years.
Just come back from Germany only to find this.
S'damn shame. He was such a requirement for 2000AD reading. Tharg, Dredd and Tom Frame - The three ingredients you see week in, week out.
R.I.P
Finn Sinn
Very sad to hear this. He'll be missed, he really will.
Very sad news. Condolences to his family and friends. Such a familiar name in the prog for so many years - not a high profile, but a name as familiar as any artist or writer.
bugger
Just heard the sad news. Although I never met the man, Tom Frame was a constant companion for this past quarter century, through his clear, emotive letters, week after week, year after year. I always noticed when it was someone else's work on story, even as a kid, and I was sorry to see him switch to (perectly competent but somehow more sterile) computerised lettering these last few years. I'll miss his presence every time I open my weekly prog.
Sad news indeed.
:(
So sad to hear this. Tom was one of the few names I could easily recall from my first stint as a reader back when I was 8 years old. Twenty-odd years later when I started reading again, it was so reassuring to see Tom still there that it made reading 2000ad again so easy. Sadly missed already.
When it comes to lettering, Tom will always be #1. Yesterday I got a batch of Progs in the mail. The first story was from 920, Judge Dredd the Exterminator.
Bye Tom, New Thrills coming at you in the next life.
critter
Before I fell asleep the other night just randomly picked up a case file and read a random strip, lettered by Tom Frame. It really was very good. It added as much to Dredd feeling epic than a Ron Smith crowd scene.
Not checked in for a while so i missed this.
Very Sad news. One of the greats of any era of 2000ad and as important a part of my childhood (and adulthood)as Bolland, McMahon etc.
Goodbye Tom and thanks for doing what you did so well for all those years.
Only just caught this sad news. Tom's work was always first class and he'll definitely be missed.
Although not as much in the limelight as the art and script droids, his contribution to 2000AD over a quarter of a century was right up there with the other greats such as Wagner, Mills, Bolland, Ezquerra, Grant, Moore etc.
RIP Tom.
