I'd give Edgington another shot, his effort was a pretty good attempt for a first Dredd story, IMO.

The Metro Dredds are being written by "The Mighty One" - make of that what you will...
But the art team might work, they did alright on the one they did. I'm certainly interested in a good way.

And yes, about time Dom got to do a Cabs cover.

stront692

got my prog today - second week in row

have to say 'tooth' is feeling a bit tired /(it feels all the strips have had a hasty rewrite 6 weeks ago when no one liked them and now plot devices everywhere

DREDD - ever known monster so far in this story - bit of overkill and little plot plus potential messings with dredd continuity (helmets???!!!)

DMW - another plot twist and the story makes less sense - i switched off now

CABAL - excellent but i hate black and white art

SYNAMMON - another plot twist rewrite, no character development, why are we suposed to care

should i just buy a soft porn mag instead of 200ad

DURHAM RED - stopped reading this a while a go but brief of johnny silhouette woke me up (then i went back to sleep when i realised it was just a cheap ploy - now hes tugging at the old heart strings) i told u they were going to bring johnny into it didnt told u (it was all a dream)

overall not very good - roll 2004

I agree with a lot of what you say stront... but I have to take issue with your opinion of black and white. B/W art is where an artist really proves his worth - all the best artists on 2K have always been able to deliver that way, B/W is what sorts the great artists from the OK ones IMHO - and Dom is superb in this respect. Good b/w art has an impact that colour can never really have for me.

Thoughts on the prog:

Dredd - Siku spoiling what could have been a (very) minor classic.

DMW - Haven't minded this really...

Cabs - Cool, thaks again to Blackblood for getting me up to speed!

Synnamon and DR - Yaawwwnnnnnnnnnnn.

Right that's the formalities out of the way! So I'm going to be the first to ask...

For the many of us who don't have a cat in hells chance of getting Metro, will some kindly soul scan and upload the strip weekly/everyday for the rest of us to read or even better, is there any chance of seeing it on this wonderful website?

Ta,

Pete.

Good point re: B&W art - there's a lot of shite that can be covered up, or at least made less noticeable in a colour strip.

With Caballistics, I suspect it could work in colour, but you'd need someone bloody good to work closely with Dom - the best example I can think of is the partnership between Mike Mignola and his colourist, Dave Stewart. They've got a working relationship that is, I suspect, far closer than may be possible on 2000AD - Mike Mignola is pretty much able to set his own timetable for producing Hellboy, and this extends to taking the necessary time to perfect the colours on the comic.

Synammon - The art continues to be superb and the story continues appace. For all the faults that others will mention this is still a fun tale, an enjoyable sci-fi romp.

The faults I would mention are that the art sucks and the story is an incoherent mess.  It`s totally uninteresting.  The woman keeps striking poses that would be sexy if they were drawn by someone who can draw that kind of thing.
There are some nice colours in the art I guess.  And I love the way the story will end one day.
Apart from that it`s an enjoyable romp.

yours grumpily,

Floyd

Dredd - You know how sometimes you're determined to enjoy something?  No matter what?  Well, I was determined to enjoy this story - my favourite script droid, bar none, and an artist I have thoroughly enjoyed in the past.  Such youthful illusions...  It really isn't working, is it?  Siku's art slows down what should have been a fast-moving romp, and completely ruins the nostalgic appeal this was meant to have.  Meanwhile, it just seems strange that this is a John Smith script: such a great talent for description being misused, such a wonderful imagination only noticeable by its absence.

DMW: I predicted her death in week one of this strip, so ha!  As enjoyable as Prisoner Cell Block H, and for most of the same reasons.  Gorgeous art, though.

Synammon: after a few rocky weeks I thought this week's episode really hit the mark.  It's funny that this strip merits re-reading because of the script, while DMW merits re-reading entirely because of the little Cookisms and in-jokes.

Durham Red: Was anyone else reminded of children's nature illustrations, eg the Farthing Wood book covers?  Anyway, good to see the Offspring get some sort of background.  As far as I can tell, the Offspring's inducing a flashback for Red and this is a proper account of an early encounter between Red & Johnny, so some good news there for SD fans.

Kaballahstix - Started brilliantly, and just keep getting better.  Bit concerned at the second time Crowley and Nyarlhotel get a mention - this isn't going to end up only going down that well-worn Cthulu path, is it?  Only I really liked the almost contemptuous way that Gordon got rid of Crowley early on.  But stuff it, with writing this good I'm happy whatever the direction.  But, please, No Musical Episode.

Incidentally, shouldn't they be plugging Dreddcon relentlessly by now?

There was a lot to admire in the art on SEE ZAMMY RUN and if these two are going to do the art for the METRO DREDD then it is indeed, a good high profile gig for them - well done.

However, I did have a few niggles with their style as well - notably; that funny time lapse four arm effect they used to denote fast movement but mor eimportantly, I didn't think they did a very good job of drawing Mega City One.  The Meg will almost certainly end up being the star of these short strips as it is such a rich source of the bizarre and wacky - it would be a shame to see it reduced to looking like any other formulaic noirish future city.

Be excellent to each other. And party on!

judge dreddd

great prog BUT the dredd strip is a little unclear...what is going on eh

Yeah, Tips.  Having reread See Zammy Run, I'd agree with you point for point there. The Lawmaster was a bit amorphousy blob as well, and
the Judge uniform seemed a bit off. As I said, not bad stuff for a first attempt, but not the artist I would have naturally expected to be headlining such a huge gig.  Still, enough with the prejudging, I'm just excited by the thought of daily doses of Dredd again - I just hope they realise the full potential of this - The Daily Star Strip had a notable impact on circulation, and that was back in 1981 when the comic was selling over 100,000!

Did it? What do you base this on? I ask because it's the sort of information that's useful for the TPO book (if it ever happens).

Mine arrived on Tuesday AM, good work subbs and the postie of course;)

The cover: its not Durham is it,you damn fools, its DMW with the reactivated eyes and the chainsaw  see the last page of her story

Dredd: okay, what I did like:
the art back at Justice Central, street judges have ben referred to as 'Helmets' before (smirk)
The other Judges appear
There is an explaination of why JD's not effected
Kleggs Yeah!
Dredd using his head
But the art is muddled and the colours muddy, this might even have worked better in B&W. There are a few learning opportunities here :)

DMW:I didn't like this at the start but its grown on me, a high nipple count, a bit of background info and a chainsaw.

Cabal: nice one good art and a truely evil baddie

Cinie-wimmin: Title: Facing mecha? Praying to Mecha? is this more of that Liberal Stalinism? This story too is growing on me, the layout works

Durham Red (Nicky Brew) I finally liked this, but i still think the colours muddy and I still wonder why she sits about is those uncomfie clothes! try it sometime, they don't half dig in.

Better than average but rollon 2004!!!

DDT did a job on me

Smiley

And wasn't the opening in this weeks Durham Red a blinder? Ahh, tum-te-tum BLAM! GRIM REALITY!
