Inspired by a recent thread on Facebook. I'll kick things off:

1. District 9
2. Breaking Bad
3. Doctor Who

I don't hate these things, far from it. But I really should love them, and for various reasons, I just don't. Anyone else care to share?

It's all in the thread title really - I've tried a few SW comics and found them to be of varying quality. Even the Wagner-scripted Shadows of The Empire wasn't particularly good. I imagine there must be a lot of editorial control over a franchise such as Star Wars which may well have hamstrung Mr Wagner, but I'm wondering - are there any truly great SW comics? If so I'd love to read 'em.

Off Topic / 'Scientists create a Sinosauropteryx'
20 April, 2012, 11:39:53 AM
Someone at work just drew my attention to this story. The scientists plan to reveal their creation to the world in mid-May:

WTF?? Surely this is fake?

At the college where I work, there's an Ian Brown, a Steve Martin and a Catherine Cookson.

Anyone else rubbing shoulders with the namesakes of the rich and powerful?

Film & TV / Fassbender to star in Cuchulain movie!
24 February, 2012, 05:31:32 PM
According to the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2012/feb/24/michael-fassbender-celtic-cuchulain?intcmp=ILCMUSTXT9386

Especially stoked for this bit: "Cuchulain is depicted as a fearsome warrior who in times of conflict would warp into a terrifying battle frenzy, or ríastrad, in which he would become unrecognisable and slay friends and enemies alike"

Creative Common / My new 10 minute portrait blog
27 November, 2011, 07:43:44 PM
From the blurb which I wrote:

'This blog will run for one whole year, and in that time I'll post a single portrait every day. Each one of these will be drawn in 10 minutes or less (I use the alarm on my phone - as soon as it beeps I stop, press snooze and move on to another one).

10 minutes, that's it. In that time I'll try to achieve two things: A quality drawing and a good likeness. I can't always guarantee either but I'll be striving for both!

I've decided to do this blog for a number of reasons: to speed up my drawing, to force myself to adopt a looser style, to hone my skills, and to have a chance to experiment with different methods.

As for the subjects, some have been chosen becuase they've had an impact on my life, some simply because they have very drawable faces, some because of their historical/political/philosophical/artistic significance. I make no apologies for the choice of subjects, and their views are not necessarily my own.

If anyone has any requests, please feel free to leave comments with your suggestions - 365 is a lot of portraits and I'm sure my mind will go blank at times!

These drawing are all for sale, priced at £5 each or 3 for £10 (including postage). Please note each one is 12cm x 9 cm. If you would like to buy any, feel free to drop me an email at mygrimmbrother@gmail.com'

Feel free to let me know what you think guys, I'm quite excited about this.

Links / The Pork Chop Express is in town
22 July, 2011, 01:58:24 PM
For all those Carpenter fans out there (and I know you're there, lurking in your thousands), I've created a group on Deviant Art, in an attempt to bring together loads of lovely fan art in one place. There's not a lot to see at the moment - I've uploaded some of my onw stuff, and reqeusted for lots more to be added (just got to wait for the artists to approve it), but pop over for a looksee. If you've got any fan art yourself, feel free to submit it, or if you feel inspired get drawing!

Help! / Wacom calibration in Manga Studio
10 July, 2011, 10:47:13 PM
Stuck again folks.

I'm trying to learn Manga studio at last, and I've fallen at the first hurdle - my wacom don't work properly! When I apply the nib to the tablet, a random diagonal line appears, and nowhere where the tip made contact. It would appear to be a calibration issue, but it works fine in photoshop.

So my question is - do I need to calibrate it, and if so does this need to be done within manga studio itself (and if the answer to this is yes, how do I do that)? I've got Manga Studio for Dummies but there's nothing in there relating to this problem.

I've got very little patience when it comes to learning new applications - I thnk because I'm pretty familiar with photoshop now I expect immediate results from new programs (obviously it doesn't work that way I know).

So any help, once again, much appreciated.

Help! / Prohibition era cops
06 July, 2011, 03:50:26 PM
Hivemind!

I'm looking to gather as much reference on 1930s era cop uniforms for a new strip. I've got Miller's Crossing and The Untouchables for reference, but wondered if anyone knew of any good online resources for this, and general 1930s stuff (cars, architecture, hairstyles, clothes etc).

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks!

Help! / Replacement Wacom?
14 May, 2011, 04:26:05 PM
Well, it's served me well but it's finally bitten the dust. Still works as a mouse of sorts but the pressure sensitivity keeps going, just not registering it.

Unless of course any boarders fancy parting with an intuos for s stupidly reasonable price, I can only afford another bamboo just now, and wondered if anyone could recommend a good online source for a replacement. I saw some factory refurbished models - anyone know if they're a safe bet?

Thanks folks.

Links / Yet another blog!
31 March, 2011, 10:20:29 PM
I've decided to start another blog, dedicated to all the biro doodles I do at work when I should be paying attention to people who earn more money than me.

No reference, no fancy art supplies, just my garbled imagination and a cheap ballpoint pen!

Prog / Prog 1725 - Destroyer of worlds!
12 March, 2011, 08:50:59 AM
A cracking prog, with Dredd coming to a satisfying ending and some fantastic panels from the Higgins droid. Loved the idea of the
emp grenade taking Dredd's eyes offline
for a few moments.

Shakara continues to be brilliantly bonkers in every way, and I will weep a tear or two when it finishes.

Flesh is absolutely awesome this week too, and after the discussion last week about Mckay's art - well, for me any tiny doubts have already been forgotten. He really shines this week, with so many memorable pics of Gorehead and Boots McGurk.

The Future Shock was pretty entertaining, and I enjoyedthe greyscale art from Joel Carpenter (not someone I've come across before but one to watch in the future)

And Kingdom... ah, Gene dog. Perfect ending to what has been my favourite run so far. Please come back soon, there's a good dog.

I'm gonna say Brendan Gleeson in In Bruges - the man acts everyone else off the screen and he does it solely with one eyeball!

Creative Common / Flatting - how much should I charge?
05 February, 2011, 11:03:36 AM
I've been asked to do some flatting for someone, and they've asked how much I'd charge per page, but I've no idea what the going rate is for something like this - anyone have any ideas?
