I'd prefer the *story* from Wayne's version to Spielberg's, because it's closer to the original novel, and because it's unique. Modern-day "USA gets attacked by aliens" films have been done to death. This one may be better or worse, but it's still more of the same. However, imagine for a second a film set in the 1890s, with humans battling steam-punk tripods, whose technology isn't far ahead of what we have today. Mix in the obvious politics, man's futile attempts to escape, and the fact that in those days, you really don't know what you're escaping to (who knows whether the Martians had conquered France in the original novel?), and you have a great film, rather than a totally derivative one.
