Books & Comics / Re: Bargains and deals

Quote from: Le Fink on 01 July, 2023, 10:04:22 AMThanks, I was trying to remember what I'd seen it in, I had a few issues of that anthology too, don't think it lasted long. Didn't it have Akira in it as well?

Yes, Akira was in it, along with two Wagner/Grant written stories: Clive Barker's Nightbreed (art by Jim Baikie) and The Last American (art by Mike McMahon). It ran to 6 issues. I was quite shocked at the level of surrealness, violence and swearing at the time, I recall.

Don't forget to factor in P&P on these FP deals before you pile your basket up high.

Thanks for highlighting these FP bargains. I'd kind of given up on comics but seeing the Light and Darkness War reminded me of an anthology that it was collected in that I had a few issues of, may have been called Meltdown. Within was something that has remained in my mind ever since, as my tiny brain could make no sense of it at the time. And here it is for a fiver in hardback:

Sorry I've had to edit this post which said the links don't work but they do now. It's amazing. Hope something comes of it.

Yeah, that's it. Amazing how evocative a simple photo of a house can be. Looks like I lived at no. 15, even the colours of the bay windows remain the same. But residential streets don't change much. A while ago someone posted a video of Sheffield city centre how it is now and I hardly recognised the place.

In the interests of in-depth reviewing, then, I would say there's no need to check the house number. I lived on the other side of the road to that. Couldn't wait to leave that particular house though, it was an awful dump. Such a small world.

OK, that's enough, I could reminisce all day.

This is all very strange to me. Are you saying the very short Briar Road, where I lived from '97 to '98, was your favourite haunt or just that area? I can't believe Pop's is still Pop's and now you live thereabouts. On a 2000AD related note, I lived on Fulwood Road for a bit and I distinctly remember the barman in The Ranmoor Inn trying to entertain a girl by enthusiastically telling her about fatties and belly wheels. No chance that was you?

Just in case, you're wondering, I don't know why I remember another person's conversation from 20 years ago but not what I did the previous afternoon. Sorry, I'm derailing the thread. I'll add something useful when the book arrives.

To Jim: being used to it doesn't make it right, I guess, considering the mind-boggling amount of work and creative decisions that go into it (having popped into the lettering thread occasionally).

To Colin: The chances are we crossed paths in Pop's "supermarket", Jacksons or in the Byron at some point in the distant past as I lived in a shared dump on Briar Road, a street adjoining Sheldon Road.

To not irreparably derail the thread with dewy-eyed old man's musings, I just ordered Giant Days: Not on the Test Edition I - Fall Semester for a very reasonable price.

Thanks for the recommendations, Jim. I like the look of the art in both the titles you mention. How come they don't credit the letterer in the Creator list when you're clearly credited on the front cover, though?

If that sounds quite taunting, I don't mean to be. It just seems odd.

When did you go to university in Sheffield, Colin? I was at Hallam between 1997 and 2001 and then at the Sheffield College until 2002. It's such an important place to me and I would move back there if we ever came back to live in the UK but not in some of the dives I lived in (opposite the Abbeydale, in Nether Edge and near Endfcliffe Park).

I've kind of fallen out with reading comics in the last couple of years (that's why I don't post anything) but you've inspired me to want to pick this up, principally for the city references you mention but also because of all the praise on this thread. Checking Wikipedia I see I have some catching up to do with 14 trades so far.

Off Topic / Re: Day of Chaos 2: a.Covid-19 thread.

I never post on here any more, I merely lurk, but wanted to pop in to say that handwashing video gave me a much, much, much needed laugh, so thanks. Maybe I laughed harder than was strictly necessary but a laugh nevertheless.

I've been under lockdown in Italy for nearly a month now, 5 of us in a small flat - got to keep the little ones distracted or it all unravels. There was a lot of contradictory official information at first regarding going outside. We were allowed out for short, solitary walks in the vicinty of our homes for exercise but this permission was abused and misinterpreted. When the first cases emerged in the village we were ordered to stay indoors unless for necessities, with heavy fines for ignoring this. When I do my weekly shop I have to carry with me a declaration saying that's what I'm doing.

I'm working online and actually grateful for the distraction. My wife is the core of morale keeping us all together. I marvel at her infinite imagination and resourcefulness. The police patrol every day with the loudspeaker ordering us to stay at home so we have to pretend to our 3-year-old it's publicity for the circus (that's how they usually publicise it). Like others here, I've reduced news intake because it was sending me into deep and constant anxiety. My wife gave me the greatest advice, which was the best thing you can do right now is make the situation as good as you can for the kids and that isn't possible in the state you're in. At first it seemed irresponsible to bury my head in the sand re the situation but she's right about keeping the kids happy. Weird how you get into a routine as if all that is going on was the norm.

Luckily, the bog roll issue won't hit us so hard as every home has a bidet.

I hope everyone here is able to find their way out of the mental fog that this isolation brings.

No worries. Another great source of second hand stuff is Subito.it. you can localise it to where you're going. Here is some DD stuff in Rome:

I wish you had written this a few weeks ago, I had a few issues knocking about in the garage but I left them recently at a book crossing. I think I might still have n. 143 entitled Apocalisse, I'll have a look when I can. I've lived in Italy for about 15 years and I bought them, like you, to practise reading the language.

If you like, there is a flea market in my town once a month where they sell lots of second hand copies, as well as a few second hand shops. Are there any particular issues you would like? I could get them for you directly. TBH, though, if you're coming here twice a year, it might not be worth your while me posting them to the UK. With the P&P it would be like you buying them new when you visit. Let me know what you think.

Have you tried other Italian titles like Martin Mystère and Nathan Never?

There's no way I can afford that plus shipping right now but thanks for highlighting the game because the artwork is right up my street. I've spent ages staring at the prints on sale in his online shop. I can't get enough of it. It's like Fighting Fantasy, White Zombie album art, old Spectrum game covers. Think I could stretch to a couple of posters taken from the game's quest books.

Saw this on The Quietus, thought I'd share it:

Who directed 2012's Dredd? Was it, as star Karl Urban recently suggested, really Alex Garland? What does it matter? And what do the differences with 1995's Judge Dredd tells us about the future of the comic adaptation?
