Title: Prog 2260 - Judge Klegg Superstar
Post by: Barrington Boots on 29 November, 2021, 04:05:42 PM
Did nobody get this over the weekend? Mine rocked up this morning.
Anyway..

AMAZING cover from Chris Weston.

Klegg still has no Dredd but who cares when it's this fun. This is fantastic. The art has dozens of nods to old Dredd stories, the conceit is superb and the final page reveal - with it's accompanying dialogue - is superb.
Speaking of dialogue, whilst ace throughout there is an especially great panel here with
Walter
on page 3. What a delight this tale is.

Diaboliks I know I don't like this strip, but this ending seemed a bit weak? Another cool character design this episode, but not enough to make me want to read another installment I'm afraid.

Dexter Looks fantastic, some brilliant dinosaurs - the last two pages are lush. As a standalone epsiode this is cool woith some dudes fighting dinosaurs, but having lost interest in the plot and characters ages ago that's it I'm afraid.

Scarlet Traces Difficult to discuss this episode outside of last weeks and whatever happens next week. Whilst at times this hasn't worked as a weekly installment strip, I'm really enjoying it and I'm glad it's moving towards resolution (take note Dexter). Lovely stuff.

The Out This is one of those episodes of The Out that wasn't so much for me as I found the back and forth between Cyd and the bag annoying: I don't really like the snarky bag and I think the story is usually better without it. Two very significant happenings this week however. Admist all the bonkers art, the old WWI style helmet on the Hurangi was a nice touch.

Despite any moans above, I enjoyed this Prog a lot. Every story had a different focus, a different pace and tone and the comic as a whole read beautifully. It helps that Dredd (and the cover) put the reader in a positive mood from the start. Overall, top notch Prog.

An absolute cracker of a prog for me this week.
The standout is the Judge Dredd strip with lots of memberberries. If I had to nitpick I would ask how Max Normal is in the chorus line in this story. I know he is an important character in Dredd's story but surely Max and Dredd's professional relationship wouldn't be common knowledge? It is a small point and one that doesn't detract from the story.

Sin/Dex: Velociraptors, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Spinosaurus, what's not to like?

The remaining three continue or conclude their stories strongly. Diabloliks suffered initially for me as it wasn't really a fan of the story it spun off from, but it is still eminently readable. Scarlet Traces has problems with me as there are too long a gap between episodes. It would be a lot more easy to follow if in a collection. The Out is enjoyable enough to read but it was a talking heavy episode this week. But there is no harm in that.

Still, Dredd was my favourite this week.

I've only had 2259, still missing 2258 - but have contacted about that one and this weeks hasn't shown up yet, though that i smost likely to do with the snow as anything.

Getting other mail though so fingers crossed that gets sorted Pyroxian.

Just seems to be the post office being crap in Oxford at the moment - they changed all the posties routes (So I don't get my old postie anymore, which is a shame as he was really good), plus lots of staff sickness. I did see a postman out today, but nothing through the letterbox :(

HA! and typically not long after I type we get a late bumper delievery of ALL SORTS of stuff (including some lovely comics and artzines from the latest Chris Askham Kickstrter) and amongst all that... yep you guessed it - two Progs, 2260 and the late 2258 (just after I contact support typical!) and so now cliche's of having to avoid thrillpower overload abound... mind don't have time to read them tonight for one reason or another!

It's not just Oxford.  This seems to be across the UK.  We seem to be down to a three day service here with Saturday being an unusual delivery day.

I did have a conflab with our postie not long back since these has been going on for a while and getting worse.  Turns out that they have the same problem.

Nice to know that privatisation is so successful, isn't it?  If places like Oxford are losing a universal service then heaven help folks out in the sticks (and no, I don't mean Carterton!)

What a fantastic cover. The depiction of Sensitive Klegg, both on the cover and in the strip, is absolutely perfect.

A good prog with a super cover

Dredd – Aaaa yes, the whole switcheroo coming up from a Musical to a Slasher movie. A lot nostalgic riding this episode super stuff from both Rob and Chris.

Diaboliks – This arc was all about the setup, we are now introduced to the next level of combatants. Enjoying this series and lest see where Rennie takes us next.

Dexter – Run Forrester run or rather run Dexter run as our heroes try to escape the avalanche of dinos. Although the plot does not move an inch, we are entertained by some good Tazio action-filled pages.

Scarlet Traces – It looks like Scarlet Traces is reaching a conclusion with a surprise turn off events. Edginton and D'Isreali has entertained us for the last few weeks and if this is the end it would be nice to have a complete collection of this series.

The Out – More off a transition episode an episode that links events maybe next week will find out more about our esteemed colleagues the Tinikar.

Post issues around here (GU51) too. Some weeks we have no mail and then about 10 things arrive at once. Parcel delivery is normal though.

As for the prog, a great cover and a really solid run of strips again. Dredd was entertainingly absurd. Lots of fun. Diaboliks rains gruesome, although I think I've lost who's who a lot, so the reveal did nothing for me. Dexter is something I've been hard on, but it works within isolation as a slice of thrilling Proggage.

Scarlet Traces feels like it's wrapping up. A pity in some ways, but I guess better that than having another Edginton strip in limbo forever. Perhaps this'll give him a chance to do more. broodblik mentioned a collected edition. I'd love to see an Image-style deluxe HC. Not sure how many books would be needed for the run, and it'd probably cost a small fortune as well. Alas. Perhaps in another reality. Which leaves The Out, which remains compelling and harrowing. Top stuff.

Scarlet Traces > Dredd > The Out > Dexter > Diaboliks for me this week. 4.5/5 overall. It's been a really great run these past few months.

Definitely this. I really like the way Sensitive Klegg is drawn to be absolutely terrifying throughout. I think his eyes especially make him look like a legit monster which of course makes things all the funnier.

He ought to have a name by now though. Dirty Frank only called him Sensitive Klegg because he didn't know his name, but he's now famous.

I agree, but surely that's part of the joke.

I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned
Enormo Overdrive
yet, are we all being coy for the benfit of people reading this thread who haven't read the Prog yet, or is it just me who was delighted by this return?

Is that Wagner and McNeil's first surfer work together since 'Song? I presume it's Chopper, but perhaps it's not.

I'm currently reading the one where he goes to MC2 which is owned by Hondo and it's as bad as it was in 1995...

I'm not sure that the villain's motives in
Judge Dredd: The Musical!
make much sense. Surely if he's
out to avenge his illustrious forebear
then his target would be
Dirty Frank not Dredd and Sensitive, who were basically bit players in the demise of Big Barry Penge
.

Also, who cares? It's still great.

Fittingly, let's take it from the top

Another candidate for Cover of the Year and a nice nod, perhaps, to the cover of the 1983 Dredd annual. Inside, that Matchbox K-2001 sets up 'The Musical!' for a glorious tongue-in-cheek tribute to past Dredds. At three parts, this would have made a fantastic panto-styled extended Dredd for the Christmas prog!

Disappointed to see The Diaboliks run end already - it seemed frustratingly short, until I remembered we also had six weeks of the Jenny storyline before the last Regened prog. Sad to see (most of) The Collection appearing so briefly. Give 'em another chance, Tharg!

The remaining stories are all great, too - Dexter is fun in its absurdly strung-out way*, Scarlet Traces is the least-suited to appearing in five-page bursts, and The Out remains a total fever dream.

Looking forward to the three returning strips mentioned in the Nerve Centre.

* That's Bates in the first panel, isn't it? Deliberately not running

I thought this too and guessed the 'aaargh' was actually her killing off Jordy until we saw him in a later panel, but I still think she's alive and wouldn't be surprised if she ends up in control of the dinosaurs.

And the prog continues to be bloody majestic... I mean this is good, good, GOOD thrillage isn't it.

Dredd remains hilarious and now has added villainy to drive things.

Diaboliks - I mean we're meant to care about the fate of the evil fuckin' nazi right, right... and yet somehow Grennie and Dom Reardon manage to make me do just that... astonishing!

Dexter fights more dinosaurs... see Dan its simple really. Either make it as good as it used to be*, make it as good as The Out or Lawless OR have them fight dinosaurs, its a simple and lovely fall back!

Scarlet Traces asking humanity to embrace peace and forgive... hmmm... I'm nervous and excited about where this is going....

The Out flips the tone again with a hilarious opening, some deft character moments as cyd shows her indulgent side and then cranks the tension up. This is a masterclass!

*Note to folks who think it should have finished at the end of story X the correct answer to when this was is a little over a year ago actually!

Just to say, my sub prog runs around two weeks late. I get the "Saturday" issue normally on the Thursday or Friday of the following week, ie 12 or 13 days after most here.

My Top 3 for Prog 2260

1st - The Out - On the run from some serious enemies

2nd - Scarlet Traces - the colours by D'Israeli again and what's gonna happen next week

3rd - Dexter - Also on the run but add fights with dinosaurs

Urgh, just getting over a couple of days of booster after-effects

A strange prog, full of endings which aren't quite endings

A bumper wrap for 'The Musical!' which TBH might have been better without the Enormo Overdrive stuff bolted on. Love Fire's paper flames. Probably one for the 'Things that went over your head' thread in General but this is mainly a pastiche of Hamilton, isn't it..?

I guess it would be fair to say nobody saw this coming in Scarlet Traces? It reminds me a bit of the epilogue on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album that jumps forward to a NASA mission discovering the Martians aren't as dead as people thought. As someone who didn't read the strip from the start, it'll be nice to have a continuation of the story that isn't burdened by so many characters.

Dexter is as great a read as ever. I genuinely think it really does encapsulate the feel of ongoing 2000 AD strips from the 80's. Am I missing another reference with that "Some barbarian queen from a really cheesy movie" remark? Also, what's the betting that next week's instalment consists mainly of a plot catch-up..?

Finally The Out, which is just utterly, absolutely devastating. Because the truth is most of the time war isn't about heroic hand-to-hand combat, or duelling spaceships - it's about wiping out as many people as possible from a safe distance. Stunning work from Mark Harrison on the centrefold pages, with the masterfully crafted sound effect lettering, and on that breathtaking full page panel. Hands down the best single instalment of a strip this year.

Christmas prog incoming!

Okay, I did say I was getting over some after-effects

Suppose I'd better paste all that into the right thread...
