is it me or is there something a bit wierd about eastern europe? i always think so.the romanians that i know are quite close to the home of vlad the impaler + the folklore is part of everyones life there.they are extremely superstitious and all that sort of thing.they are apparently leaving us their grandparents farm.that might be interesting as it is in the middle of nowhere..i find the whole area quite spooky...peter.

The usual etiquette on message threads is to post once, then wait for someone else to reply before adding anything else.

Dudley

Otherwise you tend to look as though you are swamping the thread and not letting other people speak.

Peter Wolf

i didnt realise that but thanks for saying so.i will remember.

Quirkafleeg

Oh yes, all the ones that don't look like criminals or Alexi Sayle, look just like vampires...  especially the women. Phweooor!

Quirkafleeg

Oh and just to double-post.

By 'Jeepers Creepers' I mean... 'Well this going to be a load of old tosh but I'll disengage my brain and there should be some fun to it [some time later] oh my god, that was much worse than expected!'

Peter Wolf

I thought that there were a few good bits at the very beginning but it soon degenerated after 20 minutes or so.    i just liked the long distance shots of the creature in humanoid form with the beaten up car in the distance.[were the 2 kids being followed by it or something?] I cant recall anymore than that really..

Gary -

You have just described the experience of watching Hostel with uncanny accuracy.

TordelBack

Well I haven't seen Hostel and don't really plan to (although the soft porn alluded to does sound faintly intriguing...), but I have been working with lots of Romanians (and indeed Poles and Lithuanians etc. etc.) over the past 5 years and I can report the shocking truth:  some of them are decent hard-working bastards, some of them are good crack, some of them are hopelessly dry and boring, and some of them are utter wankers.  And yes, some bad things happen in their country, unlike... uh, well, actually, very much like here.  Amazing, I know - who'd have thought it?.

I, Cosh

Clearly telling you to fuck off was totally out of order. Sorry about that.

I was conflating the stuff about the film supposedly being "inspired by real events" (which, naturally, turned out to be total bollocks: the real events in question being getting up in the morning and thinking of an idea for a story) and what I thought you were saying about Eastern Europe being a dangerous place full of gypsies, thieves and people who shit in your airing cupboard if you let them.

I've never been to Rumania, but have been to Poland and Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic several times. Basically, what Tordelback said applies. While I don't doubt bad things happen there, they happen everywhere and you simply have to apply a bit of common sense wherever you're going. Remember the case a couple of years ago of the British tourist who got killed for his camcorder in New Orleans and bear in mind that Australia is by far the most "dangerous" place for British tourists, yet nobody would ever dream of describing Oz or the US as particularly scary places. Also, I think we'd all have heard about it if masses of people were disappearing.

Anyway, apologies again for being offensive, I hope that clarifies what I was trying to say.
We never really die.

Believe it or not  i didnt realise that the film was based on "real events" as they always say that.  I had heard about it elsewhere . I have said in previous posts its just the spookiness of these places that is really interesting plus what i know from hearing so much about it.   Its also the shadow of communism that is still all around that has something to do with it.   I definatly dont have any cosy ideas about here and the usa either . As you said  earlier bad stuff happens everywhere. That seems to be what people are like. I am not a nationalist  as i didnt live in the uk until i was 10. I dont believe in nationalism at all. Anyway i know others who have been to romania who had the right attitude so they never had problems at all.  It definatly does pay just to be aware of whats going on around you . I will stand by what i said about being streetwise in places you dont know. Its just common sense. Anyway look at this place sometimes.    Parts of america really are a bit weird as well.    I would be interested to hear what russia is like. That would be interesting.        I have heard about large numbers of people disappearing in america but i cant tell you anymore as i cant remember and it might not be true.   I would say that the way america is going politically ,america is becoming an unsafe place .    So no worries    Peter.
