Do directonal antenna work?

A friend of mine's only access to the internet is via a 3 mobile phone dongle.
trouble is, signal let alone consistant signal strength is poor... have to wait & relaod pages for hours... yes HOURS sometime you have to wait until after2am when the internet traffic is lower to get anywhere at all.

I was thinking of buying him an antenna to help boost the signal & help him

my question is....
1/ do they work?

2 any recommendations as to which one I should get. I can't afford much & it would have to be an indoor one.

Sorry, not a clue!

Though I expect getting a landline installed would work out cheaper in the long run than dongle + antenna + mobile charges

I've thought that to. But some people won't be TOLD.

I do need advice rather urgently though... it's for a christmas present.
