Attention all deviants: Nemesis hardcovers are now up for pre-order

Last year, a brand new hardcover edition of Pat Mills and Kevin O'Neill's groundbreaking 2000 AD series Nemesis the Warlock sold out in just 24 hours. There's good news for those who missed out though—not only is the second limited edition volume now available to pre-order, but fans can also grab a reprint of the first volume!

Nemesis the Warlock: The Later Heresies is the brand new, limited-edition English-language hardcover collection bringing together the second phase of Pat Mills and Kevin O'Neill's seminal sci-fi epic, Nemesis the Warlock. It follows the Nemesis the Warlock: The Early Heresies collection, which sold out within 24 hours in 2019.

Available exclusively from the 2000 AD webshop, these books will be available for pre-order from 12pm BST on Tuesday 29 September until 12pm BST on Monday 12th October.

Pre-order volume one (https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/XB682)
Pre-order volume two (https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/XB693)

Developed in conjunction with 2000 AD’s French publisher Delirium, The Later Heresies collects the stories 'Ego Trip', 'Book 5: Vengeance of Thoth', 'Book 6: Torquemurder', 'Torquemada the God', 'A Bedtime Story', 'Book 7: The Two Torquemadas', 'A Day in the Death of Torquemada', 'Forbidden Planet', 'Torquemada’s Second Honeymoon', 'Torture Tube', and 'Garden of Alien Delights'.

Written by Pat Mills with art by Kevin O'Neill, Bryan Talbot, and John Hicklenton, this edition includes the 'photo stories' by Tony Luke and new scans of 'Torture Tube' by Kevin O'Neill, as well as the colour story 'Torquemada’s Second Honeymoon' and thirteen colour covers.

Debuting in 2000 AD 40 years ago, Nemesis the Warlock is an extra-terrestrial extremist guerrilla hell-bent on defeating the bigoted human dictator, Torquemada!

Created by Pat Mills and Kevin O’Neill, Nemesis combines his creators’ shared imaginative vision, political views, and Catholic upbringing to produce a uncompromising dark fantasy saga of unparalleled world-building. Whether it’s epic battles with the bigoted Terminators, high-speed chases through the vast Black Hole bypass, or Nemesis turning up in contemporary Britain, you’ll never have read anything like Nemesis the Warlock. Indeed, as a prescient treatise on religious extremism and cycles of violence, the series has never been more relevant.

Highly political—tackling issues of fascism and racism—Nemesis has been long-regarded as one of 2000 AD’s most daring and important stories.

Co-creator Kevin O’Neill is joined by artists Jesús Redondo, Bryan Talbot, John Hicklenton, David Roach, Clint Langley, Henry Flint, Carl Critchlow and Tony Luke.

Note for collectors: the dimensions of these books—approx. 21cm × 28cm—is about the same as the Fall of Deadworld volumes, and a similar height to oversized hardcovers from other publishers that you might have in your collection.

I like the way that they're guaranteeing pre-orders for the next couple of weeks will get a copy. The last edition of this left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, considering the way that pre-orders were announced first on Zuckerberg's organ, immediately sold out and then many copies were immediately flipped on eBay. It was pretty much a textbook case of how not to do one of these launches. Glad to see Rebellion have changed things.

I've ordered both books, obviously.

Yep. It’s a sensible thing. Instead of a limited number, do a limited pre-order period. Everyone gets a chance, and Rebellion knows how many to print (which I imagine will include a few extra in case of delivery issues).

As much as I love my 'Early Heresies' volume, I can't help wishing a little extra time could have been put in to reproduce the missing colour where it was and, perhaps, a better rendition of 'The Gothic Empire' to match the    old Titan one. Having said that, I have pre-ordered volume 2 and am hoping everything that was colour will be faithfully restored and am especially grateful the two 'Dice Man' strips have been included. The whole project just could, and should, have been perfect. Am I expecting to much?

As well as Books 8, 9 and 10..

Ah yes, cheers Sintec and Leigh! For some reason I always think Book 9 is Hammer of Warlocks, and thus only a few pages long, and equally that Book 10 is another short one (it isn't). I also had it in my head that Tomb of Torquemada was already in Vol 1, but that was actually in another recent reprint... So plenty to fill Part 3! Not that I'm getting ahead of myself or anything...

The Diceman strips appear in volume 2 of the Rebellion collected edition, as well as volume 6 of the Titan edition.

So far just the Deadlock spin off series and the final episode that appeared in prog 2000 have not been reprinted.

The Prog 2000 story was Tubular Hells wasn't it?
That was in the 4th volume of the Ultimate Collection and it's also in the 3rd phone book.

The Deadlock spinoff from Progs 1212 to 1222 also made the 4th Ultimate Collection volume and according to Barney also saw a reprint in the Megazine. Unless there's a different Deadlock spinoff?

Yeah - the Deadlock spin-off (Henry Flint artwork, Purity as President Purity of Terra) was in a floppy.

But Michael Knight was asking specifically about the Ultimate Collection books, where everything has been reprinted except the Diceman strips (including Deadlock and Tubular Hells).

I've caved in and have the Later Deviations - still weighing up the need to get the Early Deviations when I already have the Deviant edition. I guess it means not having a hardback with the Gothic Empire in, ironically the only book I had in the old Titan edition but have long since got rid of.

Biggest thing for me was them putting the dimensions on!   When I'm treble (or is it quad with Nemesis) dipping, I want to know that the books are going to look nice and be the same size

Note for collectors: the dimensions of these books—approx. 21cm × 28cm—is about the same as the Fall of Deadworld volumes, and a similar height to oversized hardcovers from other publishers that you might have in your collection.
: Re: Nemesis the Warlock hardcover reprint and volume two

It's the standard HC size for Rebellion isn't it? Like the America Lost & Found & Mek Files volumes.
: Re: Nemesis the Warlock hardcover reprint and volume two
: IndigoPrime 01 October, 2020, 03:12:14 PM
Yeah, I added that line to the press release, because I figured people would find it useful. 28cm tall is essentially the standard these days for OS HCs—all my Marvel/DC ones fall into that as well, as do quite a few image HCs. 2000 AD’s page dimensions are different from US comics, though, and so these books are about 2.5cm wider than US reprint.

Yeah. I measured my Trigan Empire in the bathroom this morning and that was the same.

Slightly confusing that it's described as "oversized" though, as I'd just call it the proper size.

I think I will indulge myself.

Oversized hardcovers from other publishers. Most trades ape US page sizes, remember; even Rebellion’s paperbacks are typically the same height as such volumes.

Just a quick question for anyone who owns the 2000ad Annual 1984 or is otherwise in the know: Was the story 'A Day in the Death of Torquemada' first published in colour or black and white? I am asking because if it is in colour, hopefully volume two of the hardcover will feature it as such.
: Re: Nemesis the Warlock hardcover reprint and volume two

It was in black-and-white O'Neill-o-vision. That annual was the first 2000AD product I ever owned - that introduction to Torque is probably what ignited my life-long love of the Grandmaster!

You may be thinking of Torquemada's Second Honeymoon, which was in full colour by Kevin O'Neil. It has only been reprinted in garish black and white, but will be in full colour again for this volume.

Mine arrived yesterday and they were well worth the (by now) triple dip. The inclusion of the two Diceman stories are really welcome as I've never read them. And as mentioned above, 'Torquemada's Second Honeymoon being in colour is a huge plus.
Another colour question though: did 'Torquemurder' have double pages in colour originally as this entire book here is B&W.

The opening pages of each episode of the first half of Torquemurder were on the centre pages, so were pen-and-inked by Bryan Talbot and coloured by whomever was doing colour at that point. Then it took a break and came back for about five more episodes, not in the centre pages (I think this was the episode opening with Nemesis calling demons from his id).

This is a very lovely book.   The repro on The Two Torquemada's is a bit muddy in places but I'm guessing that's to do with the quality of whatever source material they had to use.  The colour O'Neil stuff looks fantastic.

I think this must by now be the equivalent of buying an album on vinyl when it first came out, then upgrading to CD, remastered CD, remastered vinyl and then a collectors box set (having sold and then rebought the original vinyl at some point) and having it on mp3.

One thing that does stick out is not updating the creator biographies to acknowledge John Hincklenton and Tony Luke having died.

Received both volumes and I am really happy with the quality and dimensions of the book.

Any idea when is volume three coming out? last volume I assume?

What other series do you guys think might get similar treatment? Dante? Slaine? Strontium dog?
: Re: Nemesis the Warlock hardcover reprint and volume two
: TordelBack 11 January, 2021, 10:27:22 AM
My Later Heresies finally arrived, and I'm broadly pleased and hungry for a third volume (Final Heresies?), with or without Tubular Hells.

As has been noted elsewhere the repro is uneven, especially in Book V and a few places in Book VI - these are pretty obviously using the same source as the Casefiles edition, with many of the same issues. I would have thought that Talbot's assertive lines would have been easier to reproduce than most, but alas.

However, the B&W treatment of the colour spreads is far sharper to my eye, and the Diceman strips are a massive improvement over my Casefiles copy. The photostrips seem about the same, but they benefit greatly from the clean white of the paperstock. This increased contrast also benefits the Hicklenton episodes, which while maybe a bit heavy on the blacks look amazing.

The real jewels of this edition are a superb full-page colour cover galley, and a glorious colour printing of Torquemada's Second Honeymoon. These hint annoyingly at what could potentially have been achieved elsewhere, but are lovely in their own right.

Once you accept that what you're getting for your money is a beautifully bound and nicely designed larger-format edition of Casefiles Vol 2 on lovely paper, with legacy flaws and quite minor improvements, plus excellent colour bits, rather than a reworked "absolute" version or a Hibernia-quality labour of love,  I think it succeeds as a very worthwhile purchase.

Yep. All the indignant online spluttering had me worried, but actually... it's no worse than the Nemesis phonebooks, and actually much better in places. It may not live up to the progs or Titan editions, but I've never seen the original progs or Titan editions, so that doesn't really bother me. Of the three editions of this material that I've now owned, this is on balance probably the best.

Not sure what's going on but it looks like these are available again in the shop. I took a while to convince myself after reading about the repro problems but I've just pulled the trigger. Looking forward to seeing if I get hit with any outlandish additional charges when they finally arrive.
