Off Topic / Help out thread; Shakespeare and Co
31 October, 2020, 12:44:18 AM
Hi,

I thought it would be nice to have a thread for businesses which (a) people here might like and (b) which are in extremis and could do with help.

Most such businesses I know of are in Australia and hence not much use to you, but there's one in France that inspired me to post this.  They're called Shakespeare and Company and they published James Joyce's books back in the day.  Apparently they're up against it.  I've just bought something off them, you might like to also.

Film & TV / Youtube awesomeness and horrors
14 October, 2020, 11:40:57 AM
There's so much free stuff on youtube, I thought I'd start a thread about it.  What do you like? What's horrendous?

I have two things in mind:

I'm watching a 1970s Soviet spy series called 'Seventeen Moments of Spring'.  It's good, if a little slow moving. Have to get used to the Nazi characters all speaking Russian.

Just after my heart op, I watched ALL of a very awful British scifi dystopian series called 'Knights  of God'.  It's The Future, the UK is run by a fascist theocracy who have exactly two sinister helicopters and a lot of hench-dudes with which to oppress the population. They're run by John Woodvine who's pretty demented.  Also features Patrick Troughton (Doctor Two) in a lion wig, and the bloke from Blakes 7.

over to you, fellow lovers of free stuff...

Help! / Cups!
14 October, 2020, 02:02:03 AM
I broke my lovely Mean Machine as drawn by Jock coffee cup this morning.  I regret nothing, because just keeping it around in perfect condition would give me the creeps and I've had years and years of drinking my coffee and thinking' hey, this is cool, I have a Jock Mean Machine cup!'
But I'd love a new one.
Does anyone know if they still make/sell them? Any advice?
I've looked here and on ebay.

yours cup-cravingly,

General / Think a decade younger and tell me....
02 October, 2020, 09:49:41 PM
I've been away for yonks, ie just over a decade.
Last time I was around, Dredd had some promising young clones coming along, having their own personality, teasing us about would one of them take over from him...
Stickleback was, I think, still around

I can't remember much else.  The progs were mostly awesome.  Can anyone tell me any personal highlights since then? With Dredd? With other stories?

Hi,

Floyd here.  I used to practically live on this message board, but haven't checked back in since, I dunno, 2009 or thereabouts.
Dunno where to start really, but, ummm, hullo.  What's good with Dredd and 2000 AD stuff in general?

Help! / Impress me with your techno wizzery
07 June, 2013, 08:42:03 AM
I have this little medion akoya e1222 netbook and I'd like to make it dual boot with ubuntu.  I can install the thing alright, but can't do the booting because the system asks for a password and I don't know the password.  My father bought the machine at ALDI and passed it on to me.
So far, the internet can't tell me how to get around this.  Can anyone here help?

yours optimistically,

Floyd

Help! / Web Fu? Opera Fu?
08 May, 2013, 08:18:38 AM
Here's a trivial problem and a half.  I use Opera.  I like to search using duckduckgo.  Opera lets me put it into the preferred search engines, but keeps defaulting to google.  I go to preferences and delete google, but there it is the next time I turn on the computer.  Is there something I'm not doing?  Is it a plot by google and opera?

yours cluelessly,

Floyd

Off Topic / yoincks! followed closely by bah!
20 April, 2013, 11:05:40 PM
(with apologies to all the 'life is', threads..I think there's room for one more.  Sometimes life is terrific and also sucks in the same moment.  In the spirit of Viz (who took it from the Beano etc), what moments made you say yoincks! and then bah! in almost the same breath?

For me, it's been:

-realising my long held dream of teaching philosophy in a high school, only to find they don't want to pay me for it

- getting my ancient asus eeepc 701 working again with ubuntu, then finding I'm typing on  part of  the smallest screen ever known to man

as Krusty used to say...well?

Help! / Facebook help aaarrgh
18 April, 2013, 04:56:24 AM
I can't get into facebook.   Yuk, Ergh.

However, the supernice place where I work is on it and the boss is wondering if it's worthwhile paying to promote us on Facebook.  Others think that we should just share pictures and communicate a lot.

any opinions?

Help! / Calling Ubuntu Fiends
13 April, 2013, 02:26:30 PM
This is a long shot, but collectively you seem to know everything so it's worth a try...

I have an old 701 eeepc.  I've just installed ubuntu 8.04* on it.  It works and I've been congratulating myself on my general awesomess when....
I tried to put Opera on it and failed miserably.  The only guide I can find tells me to install the latest Opera, but when I try that I get a 'wrong version' message.
  Over to you,

Floyd

Classifieds / Everything in bits
04 April, 2013, 01:41:10 AM
Firstly apologies to the very patient people who've been interested in some of the stuff I had for sale.  Selling a house and buying another while working at five different jobs has been pretty taxing and I've had no time at all for prog selling.
Now however, the dust has settled on stately Kermode Towers, located in darkest Preston, and I'm in a tidying up mood after the very cathartic moving experience.  What I'm going to do is list my 2000AD stuff here box by box.  If it doesn't go here, it goes on gumtree or ebay (do let me know if you know of any better places), another box comes out of the total nightmare I call my new garage, and it begins again.

so (clears throat) we have the following:

Books: 2000AD Archive, Vol 2 - paperback
Classic Judge Dredd: The Judge Child Quest hardback
Classic Judge Dredd: The Cursed Earth hardback
          Annuals: Judge Dredd Annual, 1985
                       2000 AD Annual, 1985
          ...and the softbacks,
          Judge Dredd: The Pit

Judge Dredd: Book of the Dead
           Judge Dredd:Democracy Now!
Judge Dredd in the collected Judge Anderson

How much?  Everything is two pounds/four Australian Dollar/2.4 Euros   plus postage

yours housecleaningly,

Floyd

Off Topic / Resolutions Review Thread
23 December, 2012, 02:25:48 AM
Not another boring thread about resolutions for next year.  That's pointless anyway, once the Mayans work out what time it is.  This is to ask how did your resolutions for THIS year go?
  For mine:
- achieved: improved my Manx language skills no end, wrote a novel with the Nanowrimo website's help, left an annoying job, turning fifty (success!)
- not achieved: formal study (no time), getting a philosophy teaching gig (offered one, but with no pay), l losing weight (still got a way to go)

how about you?

Film & TV / The Watch
29 September, 2012, 10:20:18 PM
This is a public service announcement - I hope it's not too late to help someone.

The new Ben Stiller film, The Watch is really awful.  The premise is okay but the delivery is so bad I was distracted by trying to think of anything else I've watched which has been such a perfect storm of horrendous overacting, crappy script and uninteresting characters.  Perhaps Quantum of Solace, but that was better because Bond is a good character, Daniel Craig can act and the action stuff was well done.   In The Watch I didn't care about any of the characters except in wishing I wasn't watching them.  There are huge amounts of swearing, which I quite like if it helps the show along/is funny.  Here it was just pointless.  It should be a strong Razzies contender.
Slight silver lining, the afro-d bloke from The IT Crowd was in it and was his normal charming self.  So last night we started watching a dvd of that show which has been sitting around the house for ages.

So, if you haven't seen The Watch and there's the slightest chance you might do so - you have been warned.

Help! / App/iphone/child safety
21 July, 2012, 08:29:45 AM
Hey there, O collectively-smarter than me amalgamation of computer-savvy comics buffs!

My son has an iphone.  There's a game called 'Running Fred' he likes.  It says he can get 'money' in the game if he signs up for some other apps.  My question for you is: is this safe? Can he do it without our net connection being hacked/all our money disapearing or him being the victim of identity theft?

any ideas?
