Creative Common / Stephen Prestwood Tribute Comic.
« on: 06 June, 2016, 07:20:14 AM »
Hello, everyone. I know it's been a long time since I've been on the forum.

As you probably know, small press artist Stephen Prestwood recently passed away. At the time he was drawing a two-issue mini-series of my small press comic, El Bigote. He was two pages short of finishing the first issue.

As a tribute to Stephen, I'm looking for artists to pick up a page each and finish the issue (sort of like the art blog Conor Boyle, Emperor, and others put together years ago). So far, SKD, El Chivo, Conor Boyle, Owen Watts, Graham Pierce, Dunk!, Darren Stephens, Neil Mc, Chris Askham, Bhuna, Davey Candlish, and Tony Rothwell are confirmed with others interested in helping. I could use the help of a few more artists.

Please message me if you would like to be involved - even if you'd only like to contribute thoughts or memories of Stephen, which I'll publish on the comic's editorial page.

You can see the Facebook page set up for the project here: https://www.facebook.com/Stephen-Prestwood-El-Bigote-Page-1070430089705207/ and more references on the El Bigote page here: https://www.facebook.com/elbigotecomic/.

Help! / Help from Games Workshop fans?
« on: 03 May, 2015, 02:38:22 AM »
I know it's a total long shot, but if there are any GW fans here who have empty game boxes or shipping boxes (like the attached pic), please let me know - I like to custom game boxes to store my miniatures in, and I'm in need of a few now! I can of course pay for shipping (and the boxes, too, if the price is reasonable). Cheers!

Off Topic / Your Very First Forum Post.
« on: 11 December, 2014, 03:25:38 PM »
Out of curiosity, this morning I decided to see what my first post on the forum was:

If you've still got those mags, I'll gladly purchase them. I'm near Cambridge, so maybe we can work out a deal. Cheers.

I came here right after I moved to England from the US with the sole intention of finding and buying as many 2000ADs as i could before I had to move back to the States. I ended up buying a full set of progs from 1-1400 after this. (and every Meg, too) And then I met many of you and became friends with many of you, and stuck around.

I'm sure there are first posts that are much more funny than mine - especially the long-timers who have since established themselves here.

So repost your first post with commentary!

Yes, I know we have the "what are you reading thread", but that thread is mostly dominated by comics and graphic novel discussions (and rightfully so, considering the forum we're inhabiting); so I thought I'd start this thread for novels and novels only - specifically for recommendations and reviews.

So I'll start if off:

I'm a big time sci-fi and fantasy book reader. I'm thinking about reading either 1. The Hyperion series by Dan Simmons or 2. the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson - are either of these worth a go?

Books & Comics / Recommend Some Fantasy Series.

All right, help me out fellows. I'm looking for a new fantasy series to read, but bookstores do little but offer me a wall of what seems like endless Tolkien ripoffs. I'm pretty well-read when it comes to fantasy, so maybe I'm nearing the end of the line when it comes to the "good" stuff. Or maybe one of you is on to something I don't know about yet...

Here's what I'm into:

Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun is my favorite series.

but also:

Robert E Howard's Conan/Bran Mak Morn/Solomon Kane/Kull stories.
Michael Moorcock's Elric series.
Glen Cook's Black Company series.
Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stories.
and I like the first three and a half Game of Thrones books.

So I guess I like gritty, "realistic" novels featuring anti-heroes. Any suggestions for further reading?

Events / 2000AD at the NYCC...?

Anyone know which 2000AD droids are going to be at the NYCC?

Of course, if anyone from the forum is going to be there, please message me and we can meet up. I've already got a rendezvous with Ghostpockets set up, and would love to see more of you chaps (been since Bristol 2010, I think).

Creative Common / Small Press Comic Reviewers.
« on: 29 September, 2013, 07:51:50 PM »
Hey everyone.

I've got a new issue of my El Bigote comic out now, and I'm compiling a list of small press comics reviewers/sites to send copies to - if any of my fellow small press publishers knows of any good 'uns, please post a link on the thread. Cheers!

(of course I'd be remiss if I didn't post a link to El Bigote's facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/elbigotecomic - take a look, there are a lot of contributors from the forum, including El Chivo, Bolt-01, SKD, mygrimmbrother, crazyfox, Jim Campbell, as well as a few 2000AD art droids)

Other Reviews / Reading early 2000AD as an adult*...
« on: 27 May, 2013, 06:34:16 PM »
As a few of you might remember, I embarked on a major prog slog a few years ago. I had just completed my prog collection, and started reading from prog 1 to - I think is was around 1600 at the time. I read every story, every letter, every word beamed on the page by Tharg. I nearly fried my circuits big time.

Like a fool I started reading from the beginning again! But this time I'm moving slower, really taking in the stories I like, ignoring strips that didn't hit with me and passing over letters and such.

One things that strikes me is how Pat Mills carried 2000AD in the early days. His stuff was far and away the best - and well ahead of its time, in my opinion. I am a big fan of Pat Mills' work (I even liked Dynosty), and rereading this early stuff makes me realize just how great of a comics writer he is. Invasion and Flesh leap off the page, especially in comparison to the juvenile Dan Dare, Harlem Heroes and Mach-1 and even a Judge Dredd strip still finding its way. Fantastic stuff, trail-blazing and ahead of its time.

So what are your thoughts when you read those old progs?

*I use the word "adult" very loosely here, as some (many) (most) would argue that despite my age I have a long way to go to reach adulthood, or that I started aging - from a maturity standpoint - backwards when i reach twenty-five.

Classifieds / Progs from Prog 213-Present Wanted for a Good Price!
« on: 12 May, 2013, 10:46:37 PM »
Hey folks,

As some of you may know I moved from England to the US last year...aaaaaand well, progs are tough to come by over here. SBT was sending me progs all the way up until the year-ending prog 2013, but while getting back on my feet, finding a job, ect, I couldn't afford to have him send them to me.

Well, I'm back up on my feet now, and need progs! I've missed so much it seems!

If you have progs you're looking to get rid of from prog 2013 on, please PM me and let me know what kind of deal you'd work out with me and we can set up a payment via paypal.

Events / NY Comic Con...
« on: 05 October, 2012, 03:17:08 PM »
I'll be there. Now that there is an influx of of American Dredd fans on the forum - will any of you be there? And would any of you like to meet up? (nothing so cool as the Hell Trekk I embarked on in England, but maybe lunch is possible...)

Also, if any of the usual suspects (looking at you CF) are after goodies from the con, send me a message and we'll see what we can do!

My wife and I getting divorced, and she is granted temporary custody while the courts decide where they will ultimately go. I live in Philadelphia, she is soon to live in Oregon, so my two daughters will be far away from me. And this Christmas will be their first without me.

I am writing a short Christmas story, describing all the heroic adventures Daddy (me) embarks on to make Christmas so awesome - and "explaining" why I won't be with them this year.

I am in dire need of spot illustrations. I need ten of them to be exact, so if you can possibly draw a little bit for me - color or black and white - I would be very grateful. This book will really be something special for my girls.

Not to worry, you'll have a good time drawing lots of weird gloopy monsters and globby creatures out to destroy Christmas - and me stopping them, of course.

Please PM me or email me at locustsofdeath@googlemail.com if you can help. Cheers.

Hey talented folks - as some of you know, Shaky Kane drew a cover for the second El Bigote issue. Well, he kindly provided more art for a later issue, but scheduling prevented him from getting beyond pencils, so I am in need of someone to ink and/or color his pencils!

PM me and I'll send along the art. You can see more of El Bigote (and Shaky's first cover) by clicking one or both of the links in my signature. Cheers!

Help! / Help! I need to create a PDF!
« on: 22 May, 2012, 06:30:18 PM »
Hey folks, I am in dire need of a 12 page PDF (pages already designed), but have no clue how to do so! Is there anyone that might be able to assist?

I need a digital review copy of my comic project, El Bigote - if you help out, I can send you a free hardcopy of the comic, plus El Chivo and I can draw you in a future episode (being killed weirdly and horribly, probably).

Thanks in advance!

Help! / Ebay UK Help!
« on: 20 May, 2012, 06:52:45 AM »
Hello all!

Can anyone help me out with Ebay UK? I can pay you via paypal - to pay for something for me via paypal.

Now that I live in the States, I can't purchase items though Ebay UK when the seller won't ship here. Of course, I finally found the bit of nostalgia I spent 6 years looking for while I lived in England (a couple of old Citadel Miniature sets). One set is 5.95 and the other 1.99.

If anyone might go through the trouble, I can send you the money via paypal (including shipping to you), and then paypal you the shipping charges to me.

I know it's a lot to ask, but your help would be much appreciated!

EDIT: To clarify, I'd need you to use your ebay account, and your UK address!
