Books & Comics / Re: Brian Wood - Rebels / Starve

I absolutely can't stand Brian Wood's writing. Northlanders was boring overall (how do you make Vikings boring?!) and his Conan was terribly written. He's one of those writers who...I just don't understand the accolades.

Yeah, I don't know.

I have two daughters - ages almost-13 and almost-7 - and both of them are very comfortable doing what they please. My youngest has a TMNT-themed room full of Littlest Pet Shops, and my oldest plays Warhammer one day and goes to the mall the next. I think a lot of it has to do with parents making sure that they know early on that whatever they like is okay.

Anyway, I'm done being sort-of serious for now.

Well, seeing that there's no place else that a child can see a scantily-clad woman - this is where our crusade begins and ends. Take that Leia off the shelves!

Just take a scroll through facebook and you'll get to read all kinds of self-righteous people being faux-offended by all kinds of silly things.

Surely you jest.... :o

No jesting at all; the 13th Warrior/Eaters of the Dead is based on/is a retelling of the Beowulf story.

Reminds me of another story and can only Google-Search who wrote what first. Not that I think it's much of problem. Must be quite common.

That would be Beowulf.

Yep, great news.  Another step towards progressivism for the U.S. - perhaps they could stop shooting each other next.

Stop with that. We don't all shoot each other just like you're not all Polish-hating bigots.

Ever since seeing the advertisments in the back of Savage Sword of Conan magazines, I've always wanted to play Hyborian War.

It's still around (http://www.reality.com/hwprul1.htm) but I haven't been able to get anyone to sign up and give it a go with me.

I'm happy and sad for gay people.

I'm happy they can get married, but sad they'll find out how much marriage sucks.
I'm sure there's quite a few commitment-averse gay people realising they've got one less argument against settling down now :)

Ha! Those poor saps!

Will Smith and his Smiff-isms were awful in the original film, to the point that I find it unwachable.

As for the alien-human tech hybrid concept, that was hardly invented by Eddington - there are quite a few old-school novels from the 50s (and possibly earlier) that feature this.

Has Space Usagi ever been collected?
I have a trade of it, so yes. Amazon suggests it's had a couple of prints to date: 1998 and 2008. Might be erroneous, though, because, well, Amazon.

All the single issues are still available on the mirage website. I love Usagi Yojimbo. I have the entire series in floppies. It's charming fun, and we don't have many "simple" comics on the market nowadays.

Film & TV / Re: Game Of Thrones Season 5 Episode 8
02 June, 2015, 03:57:19 PM
Very nice episode, but has strayed so far away from the books I'm left wondering how we're going to get back to certain key plotlines written by GRRM. Or maybe they're not going to bother. There's the one bit with John Snow at the end of A Dance with Dragons that seems way too important to the story for them to pass over, though...

IT FEELS LIKE ACTION FIGURES BEING FIRED OUT OF A CANNON AGAINST A WALL BECAUSE I DO NOT YET HAVE A REASON TO CARE

Great action films establish characters by their actions and embrace the concept of 'show, don't tell'. Loads of great action movies start with action to get the audience's attention, then establish the context later

Just to be clear, this - "IT FEELS LIKE ACTION FIGURES BEING FIRED OUT OF A CANNON AGAINST A WALL BECAUSE I DO NOT YET HAVE A REASON TO CARE" - is not my statement, it's a quote from the article Jim posted about Fury Road.
