Film & TV / Re: Ash Vs. Evil Dead (TV Series)

Saw this Friday last week. Neat to hear Bruce Campbell as Ash again.

After Raimi, anyone heard which other directors are having a crack at this?

I'm not arguing with you and Jim - I'm not arguing at all - about how a film should be approached or what a screenwriter should or shouldn't do with a series with a 30-year gap that teens may or may not have seen.

I'm simply stating that context is there in the form of three previous films that can be sought out by potential viewers of this new film.

when we have three movies' worth of context.

That's a rather dangerous assumption for a movie-maker to make. I've only seen the first movie once, many years ago; my wife's never seen any of 'em. We both enjoyed the new film with little-to-no context.

Cheers

Jim

I'm not saying the film can't be enjoyed without context - and I'd argue anyway that one look at the types of characters chasing Max is all the context a viewer needs. (I do agree with Bolt about the opening narrative dump being a bunch of context)

But watching a fourth film in a series is the same as reading the fourth book in a series or starting at the fourth season of a television show - you're not going to understand what's happening right away, but there is context established by what has been filmed/written before.

Edit: this works in response to Joe Soap's post as well.

Both interesting articles, however the second one posed a problem for me right off the bat:

(I'll spoiler tag it since maybe there are spoilers in it)
"Beginning with action is hard. Because a lot of the time, you need context. You jump right into some actionstravaganza and you feel lost — unmoored, drifting, caught up in OMG THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE EXCITING BUT MOSTLY IT FEELS LIKE ACTION FIGURES BEING FIRED OUT OF A CANNON AGAINST A WALL BECAUSE I DO NOT YET HAVE A REASON TO CARE. It's all whizz-bang-boom, but ultimately? Hollow as a used grenade. Shallow as a puddle of sun-baked urine."
I'm not sure why the writer of the article says that we don't have context for this action - when we have three movies' worth of context. Sure, we don't know exactly why the action starts the way it does for this particular film - we obviously know by now that in Max's world, there are crazy marauders and shit happens.

Otherwise, nice writeup with some interesting ideas on the script (however, I still hold MM2 is the more genius of the two films, with FR building off of that template).

Film & TV / Re: ARNIE IS CONAN (AGAIN)

You're thinking of the Frank Frazetta, which while iconic are far from the original depictions of Conan.

Here is the original Conan illustration, which REH was very happy with (though he may have been being polite). He was depicted this way on two other Weird Tales covers, and then later a similar-looking Conan was depicted on the Gnome collections of the Conan stories.

In the original stories was often described as lean and even gaunt. Momoa's physique in the reboot is actually closer to what REH wrote (and Frazetta painted) than Arnie's. Momoa was still badly miscast appearance-wise, however; Conan is a "proto-Celt" with striking blue eyes and black hair. Script-wise, other than a few scattered moments here and there, both films got him wrong.

I glanced at the title of this thread and thought it read "CROW T ROBOT" and got excited that the forum was discussing something MST3K related.

Zaucer of Zilk was really fun for me at first, but then it just got sillier and sillier to the point that I just didn't care anymore. I'd read another installment, though.

After cycling through an initial bit of dissapointment, I have high hopes for this film. The producers sound enthusiastic, sound like they want to deliver a film that's faithful to the original CtB film*; they sound sincere when they say it will be brutal and uncompromising, and they sound as if they really get Conan.

I was disappointed that REH's novella "Hour of the Dragon" won't be used as the basis of the script - and then again when Milius wasn't coming onboard to direct. Hopefully his ideas for King Conan will still be used (which seems likely, given all the talk about staying faithful to Milius' vision) in the new script.

*I separate Conan the Barbarian from REH's Conan the Cimmerian series of short stories and novellas, and REH's Conan from the Milius/Arnie Conan. Obviously, I care for REH's works a great deal more, but still enjoy Milius' Conan a lot as an excellent fantasy film.

looking over the rules I was a little worried about there not being a campaign or a set of missions to go through.

I've been mocking up a set of Genestealer Cult rules to add some variation to the theme. The sparsity of the art on the cards make them really easy to do up in Photoshop. I have my old Space Hulk Genestealer hybrids, and the old cult set, but word is that GW is going to release a new Genestealer Cult set.

Hadn't really appreciated that the Assassinorum miniatures would need glued and assembled (think when I was getting similar games years ago like Advanced Heroquest they were snap together pieces). Spend a good chunk of Saturday putting them all together and really enjoyed it so maybe I've found a new hobby. Now looking into how to paint them...

This guy is putting together a great guide (and his minis look fantastic painted up) for Assassinorum: http://boardgamegeek.com/article/19189712#19189712

What does Regicide mean?

It means no Slaine in the story.

Bought it. Haven't played it yet. Lots of great minis to assemble, though (although a bunch of them come in other sets, so I have them already).

Help! / Help from Games Workshop fans?
03 May, 2015, 02:38:22 AM
I know it's a total long shot, but if there are any GW fans here who have empty game boxes or shipping boxes (like the attached pic), please let me know - I like to custom game boxes to store my miniatures in, and I'm in need of a few now! I can of course pay for shipping (and the boxes, too, if the price is reasonable). Cheers!
