Not been on this forum for quite a while but decided to post as its so darn hard to find info on the net as to exactly where we are with this -its been years since it was announced. I know covid delayed things but after that ....a lot of radio silence.
There is a thread on it on here but STILL no recent updates or Facebook from what I can see.
SO -MAKE AN ANNOUCEMENT!!! Not just on here but in 2000AD itself -is this project dead or going ahead!??
It's not like we haven't been very patient. Not kind to fans leaving them in limbo for so long or making them scour the net for hours periodically to see what's what.
Thanks in advance.

They made an announcement, and then there was a corporate blood-letting behind the scenes at the company originally involved. Rebellion hasn't given up on it, but if there's nothing concrete to announce, what do you want them to do...? These things can sit in meetings for years—then someone gives it the green light and suddenly it's all happening.
Until then, the situation is exactly what it is: Rebellion wants it to happen, but their original partner pretty much went bankrupt, re-structured, and the new management there shit-canned all the stuff previously on the books, so they're talking to other companies.
Stop "scour[ing] the net" — when there's something to hear, you'll hear it. Probably here.
Thanks Jim for the update

I think you were right the first time...
It really is odd how people think shows come to fruition. It's one thing when you're backed by a giant throwing cash around. If not, smaller properties can take many years to get on to the screen. It is possible that a Mega-City One TV show will never happen, sure. But that it hasn't happened yet is hardly surprising, given events that are in the public domain. (I recall Jason Kingsley saying it almost got going and then the pandemic rocked up.) However, that it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean that it never will.

The word 'making' doing a lot of heavy lifting there...
Also, sometimes there is... no news. The problem is, always-on news channels makes us think there's always something to say. Mostly, it's rumour and bullshit though.

Express Online is the worst offender for this where James Bond and Doctor Who stories are concerned. If you believed the headlines from them that I see in my daily news feed, you'd think those roles were being recast every two weeks. In the case of Bond, they treat it like a horse race. It's like "Tom Hardy OVERTAKES Idris Elba in bookies' odds", because that's totally how movie casting works.

Do you have a reminder in your calendar to post the exact same thing every few months...? I mean, Rebellion wants this to happen —
obviously, they do, but if there's nothing to announce, what are you expecting from them? I'm not sure how many times its been explained to you how slowly these particular wheels can grind.
Rebellion can't magic a willing partner into existence, and Jason Kingsley, in particular, has spoken more than once about turning down various media partnerships because he felt the prospective partner wouldn't do justice to whichever IP was under discussion. TBH, I'd rather have no TV show than a crap one which damages the brand and that appears to be Rebellion's approach... which seems wise.
(And before some pipes up "They should make it themselves!" or "Crowdfund it!"... table stakes for a major streaming series in an FX-heavy genre like SF or fantasy pretty much
start at $10M+
per episode these days and run waaaaay higher than that for companies with deep pockets, like Disney or Amazon.)
Quote from: Jim_Campbell on 30 March, 2023, 03:27:14 PMDo you have a reminder in your calendar to post the exact same thing every few months...?
I'm assuming a Russian Psyops student project - judgeurko is an AI bot that's been left running long after the creator graduated (scraping an ordinary). Currently focused on promoting a DeSantis presidential win in order to undermine western democracy and get US$$ out of Ukraine, they'd be surprised (but still somewhat proud) to hear that their undergraduate project is still carping on (at slightly randomized but still regular intervals) about the lack of a Judge Dredd tv show. They never did perfect the input aspect, so it is only capable of broadcasting.

Can anyone think of an example of a movie or TV project actually being aborted? Usually, they either get made or they just remain in limbo forever.
I'd rather no Dredd TV show than some hastily slapped together attempt at a cash grab based on name recognition.

I still think they should consider something shorter, like Love, Death and Robots. Each season like a Prog, a few episodes of Dredd, a few episodes of Rogue Trooper, a few episodes of Strontium Dog, with maybe a Cradlegrave and a Future Shock or two thrown in.

That I'd love to see - lots of one off's build interest in other characters and from there you do spin-offs if they are well received.
It doesn't need to be live action (though some of the love death & robots shorts I had to do a double take)

But anyway - perhaps we could get a Dredd show off the ground if we set it mostly in a Holodeck environment where Judge Kingsley dresses like a knight and is investigating a temporal case which involves talking about how to cook with spices from the middle ages.

I think we can call it progress if it's been reduced to a yearly question. I mean - fair's fair - the Kingsleys probably check up on their languishing development hell proposals at least yearly. It'd be funny if their meetings went like this thread has...
- A. Kingsley: "Will we get an update in 2024?"
- A. Minion: "Oh ffs -
this again?!"

To be honest, from the first post this thread has been pretty immature (and not in the fun pun way it went recently) punctuated by the adults among us being more realistic. I'd be happy for a new Dredd TV series thread once there's any news to talk about.

The thread was at it's best then.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Pythonesque trolling-of-the-troll by riffing on budget ideas for Streets o' MC-1, which morphed into DreddTV with kitty cats because the internet loves kitties.
Should be more of it.

If the Rogue Trooper movie is any indication, you'll find out once principal photography is complete.

Yes that is correct.
Similar chance of you posting anything relevant, positive, interesting or amusing to the Dredd TV thread actually.
From your quarterly troll calendar post it seems you are now focusing your crass brand of trollism into the Rogue movie thread prolifically, so I should cease feeding the troll altogether.

what? No I am not.
update please
Give it a rest!
There has been no official update.
It's the same as it has been for a few years - the original deal with IM Global hit the rocks after they had a boardroom takeover not long after the announcement in 2017.
The producer at IMG, Mark Stern took the project to his own company, Fearless Media Group where it was on his roster of projects that he was trying to drum up backing for.
It then disappeared from that site, and went back to Rebellion - then we had a pandemic.
As far as I can work out the official position is something along the lines of 'these things take years, we're open to offers, but we're not going to sign away the rights just to get something made'
for the unofficial side - I guess they could be looking to see how the method being used for Rogue Trooper works out.
I was also told by someone that people who had been working on a live-action Dredd pitch had chatted to Rebellion fairly recently.
If there's any concrete info, they'd certainly be talking about it.

Basically, this. Jesus, Urko, how many times does someone need to tell you:
"When there's something to say, you'll hear about it"...?
It's Judge Urko, not Jesus Urko. As a letterer, I'd have thought your attention to detail would be better, Jim. New glasses, maybe?
Yes, and be sure to keep us up to date on what your optician says.

I remember Tom Frame saying at a con that one time when he was on a tight deadline, he managed to misspell his own name on a 2000AD credit card (the old handwritten Compu-73E type), writing it as Tom Frane.

Over eight hours now and still no update on the optician's appointment. I'm starting to think this appointment will never happen.

I think everyone here want's it to happen. Is there anything we can do collectively to support this endeavour and help make the TV show a reality ?
Short of funding it or having some really amazing connections to money and/or industry people who wouldn't wreck the property or attempt to own it themselves, it's hard to see how, unfortunately.
I guess there are things like petitioning arts funding organisations for help financing the project or starting some sort of "We Want Dredd" campaign but I'm not sure there would be enough interest.
Patience, optimism and encouragement seem to be the main things we can offer at the moment.
Quote from: The Legendary Shark on 27 April, 2024, 04:50:02 PMI guess there are things like petitioning arts funding organisations for help financing the project or starting some sort of "We Want Dredd" campaign but I'm not sure there would be enough interest.
It's not about the level of interest, it's literally about the insane amount of money required.
Minimum table stakes for this sort of thing on a major streaming service is $10 million
per episode. For something like a Dredd TV series, which is going to require purpose-built sets and FX elements for pretty much every shot, I suspect we'd be waaaay over a $100M budget for an 8-10 episode season.
My gut feeling is you'd be talking about $250M for a full season. This, based on a property that didn't make its money back on a $50M movie...? That's a tough sell.
And that's before we even get to the idea of the "hero" being a mega-mass-murdering fascist.
Even though I do want to see this project come to fruition, part of me is relieved that Dredd isn't as popular as, say, Captain America with the wider public.
Is there something wrong with us for being Dredd fans...?
Quote from: Jim_Campbell on 27 April, 2024, 09:02:22 PMMy gut feeling is you'd be talking about $250M for a full season.
Come on, chaps!
Show a little twothy spirit!
A quick whip-round and we'll have that jolly old quarter billion in no time!
(A cake sale, maybe?)
I'm not sure where you guys are getting your figures from - I'm pretty sure that a quick eye check up is only in the region of twenty or thirty quid.
There's nothing we can do at our end
I don't know what the budget is for Rogue Trooper (I'd go out on a limb and say it's around £10m (if that), since no backers have been mentioned and maybe there's a large element of self-financing)
Even if Rogue found an audience, it will be cheaper than a CGI MC-1 - you have people in masks to cut the amount of facial animation, less variety in costumes than a typical MC-1 population, and the CGI equivalent of a quarry is less work than a full blown city.
My guess is that if the Rogue movie lives up to its promise of "Avatar-quality special effects for a fraction of Avatar's budget", then they might end up going down the same route for the MC1 TV show, using very realistic CGI rather than live-action.

Yes, if it wants to compete with Marvel, Star Wars etc. A big budget for a niche IP. If Rogue Tropper somehow does really well financially then maybe.
Quote from: judgeurko on 29 April, 2024, 02:24:22 PMYes, if it wants to compete with Marvel, Star Wars etc. A big budget for a niche IP.
It's nothing to do with competing with Marvel or Star Wars, it's having a product that one of the major streamers will
want to carry. Doesn't matter if it's Netflix, Prime, Paramount, Disney+ or Apple TV, they're not going to look at a genre series like this if it's been made on a shoestring.

Yes it is, naive to think otherwise. The major streamers will look at the stuff 2000AD are trying to do in comparison to what is on other streaming services, Marvel & Star Wars for example. Products don't exist in a vacuum so it does play a part.

And hoover bags.
I'm glad you brought that up. To get us back on-topic, it's worth pointing out that vacuum is used to adhere protective tape to the front surface of lens blanks (y'know, for spectacles) before the grinding and surfacing process.
So, apart from electron microscopes, GPS satellites, hoover bags, protective tape, flasks, cleaning equipment, food preservation, chemical engineering, vessel-proofing, space probes, testing chambers, kissing and eye-watering fellatio, what have vacuums ever done for us?
Quote from: The Legendary Shark on 30 April, 2024, 05:43:57 PMAnd hoover bags.
Incorrect. Hoover bags are placed in a vacuum cleaner they don't exist there.

Are you saying that as soon as a hoover bag (the product) is placed inside a vacuum cleaner, the bag ceases to exist? If this were true, no hoover bag would ever fill up with dust because it wouldn't be there while the closed-up vacuum cleaner was running. However, hoover bags
do get full of dust and fluff, therefore they
do exist inside the vacuum. QED.

Plot for Judges tv show: Sov dimension warp technology has been placed inside vacuum cleaners so you "Never have to change the bag!", as everything you vacuum is now sent to a different Earth. Naturally, the people in that dimension have had enough of 1. being TAD-nuked into oblivion years ago and 2. having some dust, random bits of cereal and cat hairs dropped on them.
Today is a good day to Dyson.
I'd like to take a moment to be the kind of ars*hole who points out that 'Hoover' is a brand name, and therefore the correct term for a vacuum cleaner's internal dust collection sac should be a 'Vacuum-bag'.
