If it's any help, Chiaroscuro means the following:

   1.  The technique of using light and shade in pictorial representation.
   2. The arrangement of light and dark elements in a pictorial work of art.
   3.
         1. A woodcut technique in which several blocks are used to print different shades of a color.
         2. A woodcut print made by this technique.

From the latin for Light + Dark apparantly...

For all you need to know about chiaroscuro, see Caravaggio... :-)

So, are we any closer to knowing who Smudge is yet? Is it Shaun Thomas?
We never really die.

Emperor

I think the conclusion was Smudge was Smudge.

It is probably a little too soon after the Cal Hamilton switcheroo for them to try such a thing.

That said reading back through the thread makes me wonder if there is a cunning game of misdirection going on. Hmmmmmmmm.

if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

Art

Weird you should mention McCloud - just today I noticed he had a new book out, and considered buying it. It seems pretty solidly aimed at artists though.

Right, I thought I was pretty convinced that it's Cam Smith - the art on the first episode kept on reminding me of a story that was in the Rogue Trooper Annual back in 1991. I looked it up and the credit box says Smith/Perkins.

However, the listing on this website says:

The Undeath Project (Rogue Trooper Annual 1991)
Script: Michael Fleisher, Artist: Cam Kennedy, Colour: Tim Perkins

So now I'm ultra confused!

Goaty

what if "Smudge" is artist world of "Alan Smithee" as infamous in films world?
