Title: Catchphrases
Post by: Funt Solo on 01 November, 2022, 05:38:33 PM
Prize for the most unwieldy catchphrase has to go to Sam Slade ("That's S-L-A-Y-E-D to you!"), because by the time he's finished saying it, whichever robo he's hunting will either have made good their escape or killed him around the "L".

Plus all the problems Sam has with his bank statements, tax returns, library card etc.
"You've got my name wrong again!"
"But sir, you told us it was spelt S-L-A-Y-E-D!"

It reminds me of that Morecambe & Wise sketch where Des O'Connor is slapping Eric Morecambe across the chops as he spells out various words - "I'm TOUGH - T-O-U-G-H, tough!" - he slaps out a couple of other words then asks Ernie for a suggestion.  "Unscrupulous!" comes the reply.

DR & Quinch's 'Eat plutonium death, you disgusting alien weirdoes!' may not quite trip off the tongue, but it has a lot going for it.
I try and slip it into everyday conversation as often as possible.

Most inapt catchphrase: "Let's Knife", as uttered by a soldier who uses a self-firing rifle most of the time.

I've always rather liked Sam's other, somewhat overlooked, catchphrase ('The C stands for...)

It's part of his internal monologue - his narration for the reader - so it doesn't matter if it's a bit long or unwieldy, and it's often very funny.        S-L-A-Y-E-D is funny the first time, and then a bit preposterous.

Before Dante began to grow on me, and it took a very long time, it really used to irk me how every time he said something that was meant to be snappy or memorable it was all in bold.  'I'm too cool to kill. 'Don't eat any yellow snow.'  'Look at this sentence. Look at it. It's funny and cool. Look. Are you still looking?.'

Nikolai Dante ran for 15 years.
Now go and look at Moon Runners.
What do you see? No catchphrases in bold type.
Never made it to a third series.

Is there a snappier catchphrase than 'Credo!'?

That's what I kind of love about it. It could only work in comics. It would be impossible to say out loud, and look a bit shit in prose fiction, but combine it with an Ian Gibson pic of a droid being blasted to pieces and it looks amazing.

Not catchphrases, but I like some of the common phrases in Judge Dredd:

"That's a roj."

"See you on the streets."

"Thirty years in the cubes, creep!" (or similar pithy permutations thereof.)

Even calling them 'jays' has a great resonance to it; much better than "badges" or (ugh) "helmets".  I also like all the skeds and underskeds and overzooms and stackers.

Insomuch as Dredd has a 'catchphrase', perhaps it's something like "HI-EX!" or "INCENDIARY!"

There was a lot of untapped potential here.
Think of other characters who might have benefited from editorial captions every time they opened their mouth.
'Wulf spoke with a faintly comical, non-specific Germanic accent.'
or;
'Walter spoke with an inability to pronounce his Rs – endearing to some, profoundly irritating to many.'

How do people feel about Gene's catchphrase 'Get Whet'? I'm not a fan.

Not sure it matters if one LIKES a catchphrase or not - the ability to have your lead character pulling a pose and yelling their phrase of choice makes any comic more likely to work. 'Get Whet' being a pretty clear example.

Not coincidence that one of the only 'successful' Alan McKenzie creations was Brigand 'Stand and be Delivered!' Doom (he got less good after he became zombified and stopped saying it in series 2)

My top fave most apt catchphrase would be Anderson's 'Don't even think it, creep!'
(Yes, yes, I know she never said it more than like once or twice)

"Get Whet" never did it for me. It should've been something like, "Bark f*cking bark, a$$hole!" But not that. Something like that. For you, my mouth is full of growl, kind of thing (but not that, either). You know what I mean. "Get whet" is just a little too contrived for my tastes, sitting there saying "oh, look at what a clever line I am." And it is clever. Too clever. It'll never be a "flies too smart for Fergee," or even "hur, hur, hur," will it? It doesn't quite fit with the character, for me. But then, my catchphrase is "oops," so what do I know?

I'm not a big fan of 'get whet' - like Canon Fodder's 'let us prey', it's a pun that doesn't quite work. I'm not mad about 'I'm too cool to kill' either, and felt a bit of schadenfreude-ish cheer when the Countessa responded to it with 'you're too old to be cool, Nikolai' (though that was soon replaced with existential despair as I thought of its more universal implications).

To be honest I don't think many characters need catchphrases- the people who use them in real life often tend to be utter gobshites: 'Strong and stable', 'get Brexit done', 'make America...' ...I can't even bring myself to finish that one.   Even John Wagner stopped the 'I am the law' thing for many years .

That said, Pat Mills in his heyday did it right. Sláine and Torquemada were just the kind of bombastic, bellicose, belligerent bastards who would shout the same thing over and over again.

I never thought "I am the law!" was an appropriate catchphrase for Dredd.  What is he declaring?  That he is enforcing the law?  That he is the embodiment of the law?  It sounds more like the kind of "I'm in charge" power-tripping remark that Cal would make.  "Do what I say, because me, I'm the law, and that's all there is to it.  What I say goes."

I do see how it fits in with the Judges being able to pass sentence as well as arrest people, but that capability's not unique to Dredd.  If Dredd said it as a plain statement, "I am the law (here and now, in this situation we're dealing with)", it would make more sense.  He is not the type to boast and swagger so emphatically referencing himself seems off.  "I am the law!  Do what I say, because what I say goes."

Good heavens. Beethoven's catchphrase. I never realised he needed one.
I can see him now, hands on hips, cape blowing in the wind, saying something punchy but cheesy –  witty but increasingly meaningless on closer examination.

We've not had "SHAKARA!!!" yet, have we? Or BIG JOBS!!! for that matter.

Thinking of Mek-Quake, one of the other Terra-Meks also gave us the snazzy "I have ten forward and five reverse gears and I must complete my work quota!"

Insomuch as Dredd has a 'catchphrase', perhaps it's something like "HI-EX!" or "INCENDIARY!"

Um... something about being the Law or something?

This has occurred to me as well.  It's a variant on hammering on the door and saying "this is the law" but adapted to the more solitary law enforcement of MC1 - sure they do sometimes go around in pairs, but compare real-life police and the judges and the judges are much more likely to go around on their own, just their lawmaster to speak to.

I always thought it a variation of Louis IV, when told that he couldn't just raise a new tax according to the law, replied "Le loi, c'est moi" (I wonder if that's what Dredd says in the French translations?)

But if you want context, you have to go back to the original (I think this is the first time he said it) in the Cursed Earth:

Pat Mills does love a catchphrase (almost as much as seven member teams with cool nicknames). His poorest attempt though was in the ABC Warriors - remember those cops in the silent cyber-city who would leap out of their flyers shouting "Let's download!" That didn't catch on.

I wonder if anyone has totted up how many times Dredd has actually said "I am the law" in dialogue as part of a strip (as opposed to in ads or on covers). I suspect it's not that many, but would be interested to know. I remember one strip during the "dark ages" when he yelled it for seemingly no reason, and how odd it seemed at the time.

Eve would be Adam Man's tough, cigar-chewing boss.

Her catchphrase might be, "how do you like them apples, creep?"

Adam Man himself would be too cool to have a catchphrase, he'd just be sarky in the Name of God.

That reminds me of the dramatization movie of the Mount St' Helens eruption (the cunningly titled St. Helens from 1981).

Anyway, there was a die-hard old dude who lived on the mountain (Harry R. Truman) and refused to leave despite the warnings from volcanologists (not to be confused with people who study Spock).

The movie version of him utters the immortal line "Don't give me any shit, boy! I've got a turd in every pocket!"

Judge "Tight Boots" Dredd - "Gaze at my ingrown toenail!"

No contest, there. Slightly Queasy bokes into his own helmet, and has to excuse himself. And some classic Bolland art, where he's used as reference a photograph of Boris Karloff's ingrown toenail taken during the filming of Bride of Frankenstein.
