Oh and my 'More info' links... well I don't say how much more and they get pretty wonky at times!
Outlaw
I've never much liked Journey into Hell. It's a messy, meandering tale that takes a long time to get nowhere in particular. It very much feels like Wagner was making it up as he went along. I much prefer the 'take two' of Roadhouse, it has to be said. So I'm voting Outlaw for this one.
JiH has always felt different to other Stront stories. And not in a good way.
So I'm going for Outlaw.
Journey into Hell is not a good SD story in my opinion. There's some nice ideas in there but it's meandering and just frankly not all that interesting: I find I always skip it when doing an SD reread.
On the other hand Outlaw is great and gets my vote.
Journey into Hell has a very old-school comics vibe, with it just doing stuff. Outlaw feels coherent and considered. Both have their moments, but Outlaw for me wins out by some margin.
Outlaw is INTERMINABLE. Sure, there's a lot of good stuff in it but even as a reader who only came to it in back progs, it just seemed to go on forever. I like the final showdown with the Stixes though. Journey into Hell, on the other hand, is super weird and fascinating. Sure, it's on odd duck in the Stront Universe but it gave us the Weerd Brothers, possibly my three favourite mutants, and for some reason the whole sequence with Mr Sun and Mr Moon has really lingered with me in the ay nightmares do.
Journey into Hell all the way! Who's with me?
Outlaw for me - felt Journey into Hell took the supernatural elements of Alpha's world and made them a bit silly.
Outlaw for me
Journey Into Hell had its moments (including early CB lingo from Wagner) but Outlaw has world-building, Stixes, continuity tie-ins and is more cohesive.

(that's a vote for Outlaw)
Journey into Hell.
Hmmm, right from the get-go this is a challenge.
Outlaw is one of those 'second generation' tales where the creators were really into their stride. Classic characters, amazing artwork (even by Ezquerra's high standards), that twist ...
Journey Into Hell by contrast is one of those early tales full of great ideas that doesn't quite hang together completely at times but you have Ezquerra's rendition of Dante's Inferno. Of all Tooth artwork, pieces from this strip would be on my Grail List.
This is what this cup is going to be like pretty much throughout. The difference in quality between the two ... I'm going to come down to nostalgia for the decider and plug for Journey Into Hell.
Outlaw for me, more because I dislike Journey into Hell than for any other reason.
Outlaw
Never been a fan of JIH. In fact I've never been that keen on early Stront. Outlaw follows The Killing in my case files, and it struck me that the hits just kept coming around that period.
Outlaw all the way.
Outlaw for me too. I tend to prefer the western and war elements of SD over anything supernatural.
The first time I read JIH (in the SD Files) I didn't love it as much as what came before, and then certainly not as much as what was to follow. Upon rereading it recently, I did enjoy it a lot more as there were great character moments for everyone, beautiful artwork, the Gronk skeleton and intensity of the river of fire etc.
However, Outlaw blew my socks off when reading it the first time and it still does!
City of the ... Outlaw.
Journey into Hell
Those colour DPS.
Journey Into Hell is iconic - coming to 2000AD a couple of years ater, seeing thatkid who had the 4 horsemen pinted on his bedroom wall in the Sci-Fi Special. When I finally got to read itm it didnt disappoint! Stront never looked better than Journey Into Hell
But Outlaw is a culmination of the peak period of Stront that runs from Shicklegruber to erm... Outlaw!
So Outlaw for me
Outlaw please, Bob.
JiH is interesting to read as an early strip. It shows a very different early direction. But for me at least, it's a different genre really to what SD became.
Just the one day here so get them votes in and I'll count up tomorrow morning and we'll start to put the table for this group together.
I'm going to say this, and I'll say it without fear... well a bit of fear... I don't like Outlaw. I find it messy and a bit directionless storming chaotically all over the place. Sure The Stix are cool... Now its not as if Journey into Hell doesn't have similar problems but the chaos feels more in place and good God damn those double page spreads are astonishing and so on that basis:
Journey into Hell
VOTING CLOSED
To be honest I thought this would be the first vote woth some real fight in it but that me just projecting my views on these two and in the end there wasn't much competition.
Outlaw 15 : Journey into Hell 5
Rage 3 17
Outlaw 3 10
Journey into Hell 0 -10
Judgement Day 0 -17
I would have voted Outlaw over Journey- both are brilliant, Outlaw is brillianter.
Outlaw
Outlaw by a margin for me too. I like the fun that is JiH but compared to the epic that is Outlaw it's no match. It has all of the great supporting characters (Wulf, Middendface, the War generals etc.), the Stix Brothers, and this time Johnny was the bounty.
Now I need to re-read it again...these polls tend to do that to me, make me want to go back and re-read each of these (although I re-read most of SD over the Christmas).
