Title: Friday chat - what's happening with you?
Post by: Bolt-01 on 30 August, 2019, 08:44:33 AM
This weekend I'll be speniding Saturday lettering comics for and Australian self publisher working on a pair of books, a one-shot GN for a scottish publisher and then I'll be trying to get the cover to the new Zarjaz ready.

On Sunday I'll be mostly driving - Plymouth and back (from the Brum wastes) to return Micro-Bolt to University then getting my stuff together ready to start the working week.

That's me - what about you lot?

Who's going to a gig? Comic show?

On Saturday we're going to be visiting my girlfriend's sister.  I'll be taking along a few comics to prog slog blog on the train (in notepad, copying into wordpress when I get home).

Without wishing to turn this into the politics thread the family are heading into town Saturday (Sheffield) to protest recent developments.

My eldest's very best virtually-conjoined mate has moved away, so I'll be trying to keep him busy with something other than endlessly texting her. Also hoping to paint some minis and do some sea swimming while the water remains worryingly warm.

My girlfriend is off to visit her sister for a few days. This will make for a great day tomorrow, as me and my mate will be off down the seafront for a relaxed all day piss up.
After that, I'll be lonely and bored until she returns (but I'll console myself with films and comics which I need to catch up on).

mix of bad and good - Working till 8pm Friday and back in at 8am Saturday, so no Friday night shenanigans for me.

However, my niece is coming up for the weekend and I've not seen her for a couple of years, so looking forward to a night out with the clan on Saturday.

Really busy weekend ahead;

Firstly, heading over to the UK for a bit of harmless mischief - rolling out some tyre spikes along the motorways near Plymouth and Inverness.
Then heading down to Sheffield Saturday morning - got drafted in to assist the police force taser a few pinkos.
Back to Dublin on Sunday, will head over to Dun Laoghaire for a piss in the sea that morning, before meeting some geeks girlfriend in the Royal Marine Hotel.
Poor fool has no idea, he'll probably be at home reading comics!

Revisiting the south of France, figuratively speaking. Looks like there'll be no holiday this year so we're spending this weekend eating and drinking like we did on our last holiday to Nice. Lots of wine, bread, cheese, and fish. Won't be exactly the same, but hopefully it captures some of the feeling.

Scrubbing up for my interview tonight and Sunday, might have a cheeky whisky to get through it all, but tomorrows the Manchester festival so hitting the town with a mottle assortment of scouse and cockney friends all visiting. God help me.

Got back from a holiday in Greece (Thassos) not so long ago so this is our first weekend that does not involve washing.
Shopping tomorrow and the onto the North London Derby (Arsenal V Tottenham Hotspur) on Sunday so the whole weekend is geared to that (and will decide what sort of mood I will be in for the next fortnight or so...Maybe longer if we win well, or lose badly).

It's the annual pilgrimage to see Kings of Leon (my girlfriend's favourite band) so just arrived in Liverpool and picked up the new Corto Maltese collection in the comic shop right round the corner from the station.

Potential soaking at the concert tonight then a bit of Tate gallery action and ambling around tomorrow while trying to avoid anything related to the Bloody Beatles

Going to the cinema shortly to see Predator on the big screen.

Hopefully a lie in tomorrow, then harp practise (long overdue), followed by a mate's housewarming party.

Try and shake off the hangover on Sunday so I'm able to start the first module of a course on the science of climate change from Prof. Michael E Mann.

Oh that must be World's Apart which I believe is still at its 'new' location... well it moved after I largely finished using it to its current location about ...gulp... 25 years ago! I try to pop in whenever I'm Liverpool way.

Oh and trying to avoid the Beatles in Liverpool is both futile and pointless, they are great after all.

Painting a commission tomorrow, my first (paid) ever. Sold 3 paintings at the exhibition last week and am delivering one tomorrow - the commission a direct result of one. It beats working. Hand 3 others into another exhibition Sunday. It's that time of year - apparently.

Work turned to crap and very nearly meant Friday night and weekend turned into Disaster Recovery. But narrowly dodged that bullet. Work sucks, art doesn't. Hm.

Well, it's still Friday here.  Planning on getting back onto my catch-up with the comic - I've just started prog 1912 for the first time - Sisters of Death are back on the manner!

Last weekend before school starts back up, so trying to come up with a plan for that and then will be weeping copiously into my cornflakes about having to shelve my nerd hobbies a bit more in favor of grading.

Also, had to put my dog down today, so that was fairly awful and so figuring out how to cope with grief stages around that.

Got turned onto Limmy's Show, which can be hit and miss.  I don't know if you need to know Glasgow well to really get it but Dee Dee's trip to Yoker (https://youtu.be/0YfRbNipdOg) had me enthralled.

Like Dee Dee, Yoker is a foreign and exotic land to me, but that sketch's still hilarious. I once made the mistake of trying to explain it to a workmate and the tumbleweed was deafening, though.

Maybe Dan would have better luck with the more universal sillyness of Joggers (https://youtu.be/LJ1gInUG5uw) or the still-whimsical but less culturally specific Wrong Way Down A One-Way Street* (https://youtu.be/LW7Iv-V1-Jo)

* Everybody's done that, right? You're in the shower and come up with a phrase that sounds good sung like Springsteen or Britney but can't turn it into a song. Everybody does that, right?

Flew down with my son to visit my mum and dad - he (dad) just received a civic award for service to the community. Was great to see the presentation - a lot more pomp etc to it than what I was expecting.

And on the same day I missed the funeral of a former boss (who I'd known for 20 years), died at 54 of mental illness.

So sorry to hear about your dog, Funt, that's never an easy thing.

Sunday morning's back to work for me. Wasted my weekend in front of the laptop, fiddling with a Brigand Doom short story. Somebody gave me one of those modern touch-screen phones (my first), so I wasted a lot of time with that, too - mainly watching little animated circles going round.

Really sorry to hear about your dog, Funt.  Never easy.

I meant to do a bit of panelling yesterday in my tiny houseboat kitchen, but lost the run of myself and turned it into something you'd see in a hobbit-hole with wooden walls, rickety shelves and lanterns (well, one of each, anyway).  I'm quite chuffed with myself, I must admit, not being handy at all but somehow pulling this out of the Bag (End).

I've been lost in an alcholic fugue since Friday: do on Friday (5pm-11.30pm), do on Saturday (2pm-8pm, then a bottle of wine); football this afternoon (11.30-5ish).

NOT a normal weekend.

I could do this week in week out... twenty years ago.  Now, I just want a cup of team and a mint club.

I really need a stiff drink right now, and indeed am having one.  See, while working in my abovementioned kitchen, a can of puncture repair foam started leaking. I threw it in the sink to contain the mess, but the cooker was on and I was suddenly in the midst of a massive fireball.

Managed to throw the fireblanket on it (moved to above the sink just yesterday) and apart from some frazzled hair and eyebrows there is miraculously no damage done.  Christ, I'm lucky to be alive, let alone still have a boat to live in.

Remedial wine is being drunk.

Jayzus, Jayzus!  And I though I had an unexpectedly exciting-slash-disturbing weekend because I got to take my daughter to a Lego exhibition, and then later almost tripped over a couple bonking on the beach in broad daylight (sans daughter, thank feck).

Your misadventures remind me unpleasantly of the (excellent) William Golding novel Fire Down Below, which is not a good thing, and of the still-fresh horror of trying to ensure everyone had got out of a burning apartment block across the road many years ago, which is worse.

Drink deeply, and take care.

It was my missus that actually got people out of their beds and out of there before I even arrived (I was literally holding the baby at the time). She's scarily brave and icy calm in a crisis. Hell's Bells, Jaysus! That was a close call indeed.

I knew a guy who had something similar happen to him, albeit in his flat. He had started cooking some chips, but got so distracted by a hurling match on the TV, that he completely failed to notice the mini towering inferno taking place in the kitchenette. Luckily, he finally noticed the smoke as it started to spread into the living room. He managed to put out the fire okay, but his planned weekend of of drink-fuelled R&R morphed into an unexpected bout of frantic cleaning and painting before his girl friend returned from a trip away.

Glad you got away relatively unscathed. When are you having that barbecue again? :D

I remember once seeing an old school friend get absolutely shit-faced on a night out. I bumped into him a couple of days later and he had a huge scab on the end on his nose. It turned out he'd gone home and fried himself some bacon for a sandwich - he bent over to savour the smell and fried the end of his nose!
Could have been worse though!

When he was still living at home, my waster brother developed a habit of coming home stocious, and throwing a pan of beans on the cooker before passing out on the kitchen table. The smoke alarm became a regular early-hours sound in our house, but it never roused him. (Now he's a superfit former Bondi lifeguard who competes in Iron Man races all over the world. Funny thing, life).

Fire Brigade advice is to prepare food before you go out drinking, or get a takeaway.

Loving these stories! They make me feel a bit better about my own near-disaster.

I used to teach a french guy who prided himself on the cooking skills he had in his Parisian blood.  He lodged with a fireman in Dublin. He also loved a drink.  You can see where this is going... the third time he passed out with the pan on, he was kicked out.  And couldn't understand why.

(As an aside, while drunkenly cooking for another couple of mates, he concocted two stunningly exquisite specimens of French cuisine:  Spaghetti Bolognaise and chicken nuggets.)

As younglings, my brother and I discovered that throwing snowballs into buckets of burning oil produced a very satisfying nuclear mushroom effect - followed by a much less enjoyable but equally nuclear reaction from Dad*. *This is, of course, in the days before The Environment, hence the burning oil. There was also no such thing as bad parenting and Health & Safety were a double-act on Blackpool's Central Pier.

Conversely, I've discovered a genuine love of arson.

I had to get rid of a mantelpiece the other day. After kicking it to pieces, I arranged it in Darth Vader funeral pyre formation then stood back to watch the inferno.  Nothing.

Half an hour of chucking lit balls of scrunched-up tabloid at it before it dawned on me that a fire surround would probably have been treated to prevent bursting into flames.

All I could think of was to try to intensify the heat by reshaping the pieces into a closed box shape. FOOM! Burnt with the intensity of a gas burner at high heat and made a noise like a waterfall in full flow.

I looked up the definition of pyromania, and if I had an actual psychological condition I'd have experienced arousal and masturbated. Close, though.

Yeah, that was the place. Decent selection of GNs but they were clearly embarrassed of them and had to hide them downstairs.

Only the second time I've ever been to Liverpool and the first was so long ago it may as well be another country!

Had a good time and even through my sour exterior I could feel the good humour of the locals soaking in. Two things I was really surprised by (and bear in mind I've lived in Glasgow for half my life):
- How quickly a howling gale turns to brilliant sunshine.
- How early they start drinking.

Seriously, half the city was pissed by 5pm on Saturday and there wasn't even a match on. Bravo!

Glad to hear that both Jayzus and Tordel survived their respective eye-openers.

The fire thing is weird. I grew up with an open coal fire at home so it's almost just been something normal that you have to be careful of. Had two separate pals at secondary school who were properly obsessed with it. Any time they came round they'd just sit there staring at and trying to find little bits of paper or wood to chuck on. Found that really freaky.

I was that child! I used to throw all sorts on our fire - it only took a couple of minor explosions to dissuade me. There's nothing like a face full of little burning splashes of molten plastic for encouraging a re-think.

I live in a fibreglass boat with a tank full of diesel, two jerrycans of petrol, a bag of spraypaints, a gas powered fridge and cooker, and a wood burning stove.  When the inevitable happens, you have my full permission to suggest it to my next of kin.

My own childhood fireplace entertainment involved leaving the poker in the fire till it was glowing red, then hitting it off bricks to see if it really would bend like a horseshoe in a blacksmith's.  I worked in a bronze foundry later in life, where that kind of thing got very old very fast. (I got a vicious burn there too, and still have a scar on my wrist. Also, the same foundry is still around and made swords for Jon Snow and the Lannisters.)

Little sisters can be as fun, but you have to be careful not to go too far. It's one thing to cause your little brother some semi-serious injury, but do it to your little sister and trust me, your father's belt will make your arse glow for a month.

I'm giving Blood tonight for the first time in a little while, so I'll be feeling a little drained this evening no doubt.

I'll be dropping in to the Hi-Vis gig in Brum on Saturday to support Mini-Bolt as he's got a table there and is taking part in a large scale painting thing.

The rest of the weekend will still be lettering comics! Still got a mountain to get through.

Also wanting to catch up on a couple of films I've missed over the years - Think Hateful 8 first, then I want to see if I can track down Kubo & the two strings...

The Megadrive Mini and PC Engine Mini are being released later this year/early next year respectively. Both have a decent selection of games built in and retails at less that £90. They're just plug and play systems, so as long as you have an HDMI socket on your telly you should be good to go.
This is probably the easiest way to get into playing old games if you don't want to faff with emulators (which I hate) or old consoles and CRT TVs (which I love, but they take up loads of space and can be expensive).

I shall likely be meeting the Southern Contingent London way and traipsing to Gosh and FP.

Not too fussed about getting stuff signed.* Be nice to see the others, breathe in the Dreddy atmosphere and buy a couple of items maybe. And probably down a couple of beers or 3.

* The drawing gig at Gosh peaks my interest although I think it'll be aimed at the young uns, which is a good thing, don't get me wrong. I will feel a bit silly being the only adult without a nipper taking part, though, but I can go in an observational capacity.... We used to have a child sized ventriloquist doll called Freddie, I could have brought but he has appeared to have walked.** He was one ugly critter, and would need a deep hood to pass as a child, to be fair.

**A scary thought considering the nightmares I had about him as a nipper.

Tomorrow we're doing a family BBQ for my youngest, who will rather improbably be turning 10. She's deep into Lego, Minecraft, Raina Telgemeier comics, Pokemon and every-book-ever-printed, so she's an easy pleasure to shop for! Downside is I'll miss the chance of making PJ's acquaintance at Day of Dredd in Dundrum, but that's an upside for him, so it all balances out.

Also be commissersating with colleagues who've just been made redundant (by e-mail!) from the same company I suffered so much angst over being let go from (by e-mail!) only last year, which just goes to show that you can waste a lot of time worrying about your own inadequacies when things don't amount to anything more than a shrinking business and HR rudeness.

And hopefully I'll get also chance to read a chunk of the new Neal Stephenson which fell into my welcoming arms today.

And paint minis, always paint minis.

Well seeing as it's Friday evening again, I am currently annoying my neighbours by strumming my guitar and singing along shamelessly - because I can.

Tomorrow I shall be at the Southern Contingent meetup in London Village, but have no goods to be signed - I'm just there for the thrillpower of being amidst other happy squaxxes.

Sunday I shall be on a quest of electrically illuminated Klegg heads and T Rexes - if successful I'm sure Sheridan and I shall start a separate thread of our newly acquired bounties, with pics.

And then to finalise the weekend I'm off to have a final session of inky stabbings to my back as I have been getting my back tattooed since April  to commiserate / celebrate entering my 4th decade on this planet.

Just grinding through the Conquest magazine stuff, trying to keep from drowning in multicoloured plastic. Made a big push and got all the scenery so-far built and primed the other week, and now its sheer black mass is intimidating me, so I'm back on basecoating minis while trying not to meet its eye...

More seriously i find it's all solid quasi-meditative practice, much like fishing but without the cruelty, and with a guarantee that I'll have something completely pointless to show for my efforts. Art for the utterly uncreative. The magazine has been great for me, and I keep finding excuses not to drop it (ooh, Typhus soon!).

One good thing about cosplay, it makes you want to look your best for any project you do, so it's been a great way of persuading myself to get back in shape.

Just back from Tipperary where I went for a wedding, and feck me but it really is a long way, when you're on a 125cc bike.  Nice, traditional wedding, marred slightly by the priest using the ceremony to rant against non-Catholic marriages and how yoga and crystals won't save you (but talking to dead man up a stick will). He approached me after the ceremony, I braced myself but it turned out he wanted to look at my bike, being a former biker himself.  He told me he'd drunkenly crashed about 7 or 8 times in his younger days.

Also got a lift to my B&B in the small hours by a local and left my phone in his car.  Spent hours doing old-fashioned detective work to find his house and eventually, after driving down many winding country roads and knocking on doors I got it back.  Can't believe it's only Saturday.

Going on a motorboat for a spin around a nearby island shortly, followed by food and booze and bingo at one of those hipster places that seem to think its somehow zany. I'm just there for the booze. Let's hope that's not cinnamon infused schnapps or some shit.

Tomorrow I am praying I am not too hungover as I desperately need to practice. My harp tutor gave me a right bollocking on Tuesday for not working on a tricky grade six piece that's been giving me grief for months.

Saturday night should be a laugh - snagged some super-cheap tickets for my partner and I for the musical of Little Miss Sunshine at the theatre.

Sunday is going to be full steam ahead with the studies, both harp and the science of climate change course.

I'm  up to module four on that climate change course at the mo, and looking at some crazy computer models that dissect the Earth for a mile up and a mile down, chopping it into little squares all the way around the globe, and appliing crazy physics to each to represent atmosphere, water, land use, temperatures and humidity, ice albedo, ocean currents, wind currents, and goodness knows what else. Each square interacts and informs the other, so when the supercomputer crunches the numbers it can then tell us how fucked we all are.

Fun times!

Little confused as to what this thread is supposed to be about .... what we are up to on a Friday night or what is going on in general and just chatting on a Friday night because we are all KOS's and too boring to do anything more interesting than sit at a computer sharing inanities.

I'm Just out going out for a run. Then making a curry. Looking forward to enjoying last rays of sun with a glass of wine.

Then I'm buying my Thought Bubble tickets.

Boring, us?

Just me and Youngest Daughter this weekend, I foresee the Detective Pikachu movie and quite a lot of Lego building in my immediate future. Will try to bully her into a hike  if the wrather holds. Right now I'm lounging on a beach near work reading my prog, waiting for Friday traffic hell to subside before I head home. A better waste of time.

Mrs YNWA is away so I'm on kid taxi duty alone. I'll be sucking up the chlorine at swim club x3 alone. Running a 10k alone...

... this isn't what liberated weekends used to be about...

You have a beach near work?  We just have protests.

Not about us, I hasten to add.

Usually.

At work (because: time zones), have stinking cold. Daughter (7) will arrive via bus and make her own way into the building today.

We've tried this new independence routine three times:

1st time: the bus driver didn't read the note and so dropped off my charge one hour late. I was panicking like a dad panicking and phoning everyone, and waiting on the pavement for her when she arrived.

2nd time: the bus driver dropped her off in time and I was waiting for her on the pavement. She told me to go back inside so she could be independent. (She did this by saying: "Are you kidding me?")

3rd time: that's later today. I must resist the urge to go outside and wait for her. She is entirely capable of walking from a bus to a building without the world ending. Now I've just got to convince myself that's true.

Big year for us.

My thoughts on starting this were simply to share what folk were getting up to at the weekend. Simple, and part of the efforts on my part to increase the general activity on the board.

So...

After moving my youngest to Uni last weekend I'm going to be spending Saturday making comics (Deadline for Zarjaz & Something Wicked is looming) as well as taking Sunday to go out for the day with Mrs Bolt for a nice walk in the Derbyshire Dales along with our dogs before enjoying a pub meal.

So I'll be here swapping inanities for some time tomorrow but on Sunday not so much.

Just back from my usual Friday evening after-work* pub visit, and I'll be over at my mum and dad's for Saturday evening and Sunday lunch - they're both 88 but as my dad gets more confused and uncommunicative, my mum gets more bored and lonely, so I'm trying to go more often (virtually all their social circle have died - my mum said recently that apart from the weekly shop and multiple doctors appointments, the only time they go out is for funerals, which happen very often for them now).

* frustrating week at work - we have so many interlinked IT systems, but for the last couple of days, one of the main ones has simply refused to log me in. I have a theory that nobody actually understands how computers work and that IT professionals spend most of their time just guessing - I've spent the last two days unable to take phone calls (I work in a call centre) and have had a stream of different people convinced they've fixed it, only to be baffled why it still doesn't work. In some ways, it's been cushy - I've just been working the mailboxes rather than taking calls, but frustrating all the same.

Mrs X is away to Manchester with her sister - they live at opposite ends of the country and have a weekend away once a year somewhere in the middle.

So, binge watching Preacher S3.

I'm a computer programmer. To a large extent, you're entirely correct. In attempting to correct a flaw in a highly complex system in a reasonable amount of time (this second point is key in a commercial situation) one has to sometimes attempt something without having studied it in depth.

Then your lunar lander crashes.

I'm just waiting for the inevitable solar flare event that will wreak havok (the last one in 1859 took out the telegraph system*) that will cause absolute fucking chaos now that all our businesses and services are IT based.

I don't work in a call centre, though we do take a lot of calls.  We had something about a week ago where if you logged out for lunch you couldn't log back in to the phones again.  We got a lot of work done in the afternoon that day, what with not being bothered by calls every ten to fifteen minutes!

Working today and clearing scrub from a Puffin Island tmw so the wee darlings can burrow their nests, its my first time doing this so totally out of my comfort zone.

Good work dude - that sounds awesome! Whereabouts are you doing that?

As for me, resting today after the march yesterday and subsequent piss-up. Tomorrow it's back to harp practise and more climate change science study.

My guess is North Wales.  Good work, Proudhuff!

Well learnt somthing today. Turns old the extra effort put into running up hill on my twice weekly 10k run home from work do not translate into faster times when I run the relatively flat (relatively this is Sheffield). I got a very disappointing 54.50ish today, which is pretty much what I run on the way home....

...so its not the hills its the extra 10 years that mean I'm not sure I'll ever break that 45 minute barrier!

Oh Martin, yeah he was next to Bob!

Its okay. 9 years ago I did 46.02 (I think it was) closest I got to breaking 45 minutes... for some reason I figured that those 9 years didn't matter as much as running up hills! Live and learn and hey just means I've got to rethink my strategy... though can't get rid of those hills on my way home from work alas... or set different goals.

Keep on runnin'...

Good to hear it! I heard it through the grapevine that the boat had been completely destroyed! Wasn't sure how to get in touch with you so checked here :D I was going to organise a gofundme and a series of fundraising gigs and everything. Guess I'll just keep the money I've raised so far then.

Johnny, sorry to break this to you - JBC actually passed last year after smoking a rollie full of nettles and horse manure while pissed.
His last request to be buried at sea couldn't be met due to the boat being in such poor nick.

Me and the lads put a few quid together to have him thrown off the Forty Foot in a bin liner.

In fairness, we tried to warn him that Pirates of the Caribbean Cos-play method acting would be his undoing. But he was quite beyond all reason.  :'(

Ah, I see. You feckers.

Nah, the kitchen fireblanket incident was a separate one a couple of years ago - the boat actually is completely destroyed this time round.  I'm still standing though!

EDIT - I will still accept the offer of being thrown off the Forty-Foot in a binliner whenever I do pass.
