But, we used to be!

So, whelmed was the original overwhelmed. But then being whelmed wasn't enough (like, literally), so people got overwhelmed (like the person who's literally dying from a minor cold, or at death's door). After that, you could also be underwhelmed, and being just whelmed fell out of fashion - like those blue tartan trousers from the 80s.
