Title: Quoting Scripture
Post by: JohnW on 01 September, 2023, 08:00:55 AM
On too many mornings, standing in the kitchen as my brain boots up, I will find myself staring dully at the makings of my breakfast and saying,
'This is an apple. Say apple.'

By the same token, I'll identify roadkill with the words,
'It's a dead bird, Uncle Waldo.'

Once, in a job with which I was becoming steadily less enamoured, I answered my boss's inquiry as to when I was coming back from holiday with,
'Who said anything about coming back?'

These are just the ones that come to mind, and they're all early Alan Moore, but I wonder if ever, in the grip of despair, I might throw myself from a high building, would part of me be yelling, 'For freedom! For justice! For Mega-City One!' on the way down?

Surely I can't be alone in this. Surely there must be a few thousand middle-aged oddballs out there who go about muttering random quotes from 2000AD in unguarded moments?

No, but I think I might start.  Looking forward to going to the fruit aisle of the supermarket tomorrow so I can admonish Rackle to "Mind the oranges, Marlon"

I'm not sure about using these in public, but "Your mouth is full of wrong" is one that gets used a lot in my house. "Bojemoi!" too as well and of course, the classic '"Izzat so?"

There's a line in You are Mean Machine where Mean runs through a crowd with a Judge helmet perched stupidly on top of his head and says "Outta my way, I'm a stinkin' Judge". This is my favourite 2000ad to quote / bastardise of all time.

Not out loud, but I can never see a mentor death scene in a movie without mentally adding Judge Shmaltz's famous last words: "And another thing...uuuh!"

Very humble ones from me, I'm afraid.

Not out loud, when I'm making plans: 'Here's what we're gonna do.' (Ugly John from Button Man)

Not out loud: 'You will be.' (Dredd again,  but in my case I also have to pretend that the person who pissed me off said sorry.)

Out loud, when realising something: 'Wait a minute.' (Dredd, who also says it to himself out loud in a PJ Maybe story.)

None of them are exactly 'Gaze into the fist of Dredd', I know.

I do sometimes use "one chance - [boot knife]", but replacing it with something innocuous like a stapler. And I just do it in my head, because ... they're watching!

The Judge Dredd figurine in our house does have conversations with mini-Solo where he's entirely in character and they entirely disrespect his authority.

 - "Is that sugar in that bowl, creep?"
 - "It's not illegal here, Judge Dredd! Now, let's put a dress on you!"
 - "Assaulting a Judge! 20 years!"
 etc.

I think that in future, anytime I have to class up my appearance, I will straighten my tie in the mirror and say:
"Stak! He wears a suit!"

Not out loud, but in moments of hard decision and cold certainty – when I'm committed to what needs to be done:

"Gimme the pie, Charlie!"

(Like when I want that pie, for instance)

Well if that's the way this thread is going, then let's take it all the way and flog this (well-dressed) horse into the ground.

"Yawn", "Sigh", "Deep sigh", and of course the ubiquitous "Aargh", were widely used as spoken words in our house when I was growing up.
They might not have come from 2000AD, but their roots in comics are undeniable.

"Thirty years in the cubes, creep!" (misbehaving juves)

"You don't look ready" or "You look ready". (ditto)

"HI-EX!" (just because it's fun to growl it out in a Dredd-y voice.)

"Our man in Hondo" (on various trips to Japan).

I can't be the only one to think (if not say) "Because I hate you." whenever I do something mean and the person wonders why.

On being confronted by major suprises, my mind jumps to "Holy Weasel! Ben 90's an android!"

And should anyone ever happen to use the word 'gibberish' I think we all know what the response is...

Perhaps not exactly scripture, not originating from the House of Tharg, but two Bogie Man quotes have stuck with me, for some reason.

'Aw, ye puir wee sojer'; and, though I'm probably misquoting, 'Sir wouldn't like to pay at all, but I wasn't about to tell this dame.'

Never said out loud, just in my head: The former in a terrible Glasgow accent when I see someone in a desperate state, and the second in a terrible Bogart accent when someone asks me how I want to pay.  The latter does not depend on whether the person calls me Sir - they never do - and I always pay anyway.

Few phrases feel as good to use in real life as "Request denied!"

In moments of frustration with recalcitrant objects or livestock, like when you're trying to hold three things at once in order to screw them together and manage to drop every single piece one by one or trying to catch a panicked chicken (don't ask), "Flies too smart for Sharkee."

One summer I worked as a security guard in an art gallery that had notions. They had just installed a swanky lift and thought to add to the swank by reviving the archaic job of lift attendant. One of us had to stand in a confined space, press a button while wearing white cotton gloves, and confidently announce each floor.
It proved an unpopular post.
One of my colleagues claimed to have said, 'Express elevator to hell! Going down!' one time. I'd almost believe him, seeing as he was a bit of a psycho.

Thinking about it now, I wonder what I might have done if I'd lost my cool and there happened to be more than three floors.
'I'm a-goin alla way upta FOUR!'

I have tendency to mutter "No! Please let me drown before [insert whatever minor inconvenience is blighting my day] get to me!".

On odd choice of scripture I'm sure but the ludicrous imagery has been a source of many a good chuckle.

I never cared for this story, but that one panel has been stuck in my head for more than thirty years and any mention of parties and/or Gene Pitney recalls it.

Yup, all the time. And it's a good line. People like it and I have to explain it's not mine.

I may also have once introduced myself to a newspaper production staff by saying: "I'm a stickler."

I remember our sadly-missed comrade Stewart Perkins (whose board name John Wagner gave to the current Chief Judge) telling us he had quoted that Dredd speech in its entirety when introducing himself to whatever squadron he led in the army. Presumably replacing 'Dredd' with 'Perkins'.
