Prog / Prog 2115. Next-Gen Policing.
19 January, 2019, 11:35:28 AM
Lovely cover by Cliff Robinson with colours by Dylan Teague.

There's a Droid Life cartoon.

Dredd has an excellent opening episode. Judge Randy is the new man in town and the top job is up for grabs. Looks like a bit of a shake-up might be coming to the strip but I could be wrong.

Brink has actually grown on me and the last few episodes have been pretty interesting. This week is actually quite spectacular.

Skip Tracer. I always read the whole Prog, even the stories I'm not keen on, hence Brink growing on me. The difference with Skip Tracer is that we are now in a third series and it still does nothing for me. I will persevere.

Tharg's 3hrillers - Keeper of Secrets. Very interesting first episode featuring horror and Cockneys'. Seems like a bit of a Clive Barker vibe going on here, in the art and writing, though I'm not sure that's actually the intention. Two of Clive's short stories sprang to mind - The Midnight Meat Train and one I can't remember the name of which featured the discovery of a burial site in London. Anyway, This is a good opener.

Fiends of the Eastern Front. An action heavy episode to finish the current series. Look forward to it's return.

There's a letters page.

Prog / Prog 2098 - God of Law
08 September, 2018, 06:06:44 PM
Outstanding cover by David Millgate.

Inside there's an advert for a new Dark Judges story starting in Meg 400. The Torture Garden, by David Hine and Nick Percival.

The Sons of Booth have gone mental after watching to much TV and are on a mission to rescue the man that killed the planet. Someone shoot these fools.

Survival Geeks is still going strong and this is my favourite story arc yet. Good stuff!

An old friend returns in The Order and another guy forgets how to dance. I love this series!

Mechastopheles gets a bit dark and a little girl loses her temper. I'm enjoying this series and this in particular is a very fine episode.

Grey Area twists and turns like a politician. Excellent final episode to the current arc.

There's a letters page.

Great Prog - Long may it continue!

Help! / Name That Story!
09 September, 2017, 08:38:35 PM
Shout out to the Hivemind - Can anyone name this 2000ad story I have vague memories of?

It features people fighting in front of an audience and tiles on the ground that activate different traps. The only exchange of dialogue I remember is - "Where did you learn to fight?", answer "My Grandmother!"

Thanks in advance!

Classifieds / 2000AD FCBD 2017
24 April, 2017, 10:41:03 AM
My local Comic shop is not participating this year so I come to the board cap in hand!

If any kindly boarder comes across a spare copy and would like to pass it on - here I am!

I don't use PayPal but am willing to do a Noel Edmonds style Swap Shop kind of deal. I'll dig through my pile of goodies and offer something of at least five pound value (more likely higher as it's still better than buying from the internet).

Thanks in advance!

Film & TV / Castle Rock!
18 February, 2017, 06:57:28 AM
New TV series collaboration from Stephen King and JJ Abrams. There's a small article on Rolling Stone, and a short teaser video showing a few character names and some of the more famous locations from King's books.

From the small amount of info on offer I'm thinking this will go down the Penny Dreadful/Gotham route of taking various characters and plots and mashing them together.

I'm a big fan of King's work, not so much Abrams, but I'll certainly give it a look when it comes out.

Help! / Advice Please!
23 January, 2017, 11:58:45 AM
I've worked for the same company for nearly 15 years. Recently I've been told that I have to produce either a birth certificate or passport (don't have!) for their files to prove I'm an English citizen!

They are adamant that I must provide documentation despite working for them since 2002!

Am I legally obliged to give them what they are asking for? Or should I just tell them to go fuck themselves!

That's right! Coming in spring 2017 is a comic series based on the Fighting Fantasy Gamebook, Freeway Fighter.

Written by Ian Livingstone and first published in 1985, the book is set in a post-apocalypse, Mad Max style setting. Involving warring gangs and Scrounging for supplies.

The comic is an adaption of the aforementioned book, set around 18 months after the end of civilisation.

Initially touted as a Kickstarter project, the publishing rights have been secured by Titan Books.

Music / Napalm Death, Apex Predator - Easy Meat!
31 January, 2015, 01:47:19 PM
The Masters of Grind/Extreme Metal are back, and this time they're Angry!  ;)

Apex Predator - Easy Meat is the 15th Studio Album from Napalm Death and they've really gone Mental this Time!

Now I'm a massive fan of ND but objectivity is the key here so I'll try not be Biased, but Fuck Me, this really is a Fantastic Album! Even surpassing my previous favourite, Enemies of the Music Business.

The title track, Apex... was a bit of a shock when I first listened to it. It reminds me a bit of "Multinational Corporations" from the album F.E.T.O, with Clanging Drums and Vocals ranging from 'Monk-like' chanting to all out Angry Shouts, but it also has a deep Broodiness to it thanks to some Excellent Bass work by the bands longest serving member, Shane Embury.

And then it Kicks right off!

Smash a Single Digit is Brutally fast and Short, much like the album itself. I got the Special Edition with 3 extra tracks bringing the total to 17 songs. 48 mins in total, but it covers a fair bit of musical ground in that time.

Most of the Tracks are insanely fast and short but still have a surprising amount of layers thanks to Excellent Production and the Band itself being on Top form. Having said that, one of the best Tracks is Slow Burning Dirge fest Dear Slum Landlord.

A Genuine 10/10 from me. Easily Surpassing anything they've done before and still managing to make Diverse/Extreme music something more than the Cliché it seems to be becoming with the more modern Bands of the Genre!

Cheers

Film & TV / Monty Python Reunion.

The Money Python team (minus Graham Chapman obviously) are re-uniting for a stage show.

A good idea methinks. Some of the tv stuff was hit and miss but I think the films are hysterically funny.

Hopefully this could lead to something more in the long term.

Off Topic / Ministry - From Beer To Eternity.
26 October, 2013, 09:38:31 AM
Finally listened to this after a three week Stocktake frenzy.

The Boxeset is very well presented (my lack of photography skills aren't doing it justice) and bought from Amazon for £35. The tobacco box is for the benefit of scale.

The album itself is a bit of a mixed bag, and probably not a high-note to end their career (again) on.

The industrial elements are more prominent here than on the last couple of albums which were very Heavy Metal, IMO.

The first track on the album is 'Hail To His Majesty (Peasants)' which sounds like it could have come from 'The Land of Rape and Honey', and is a worthy album opener. Other highlights include 'TV 4' a continuation of Uncle Al's anti-advertising jingles, and It's fast as hell. 'Change of luck', again this sounds like Ministry of Yore, more in the vein of tracks like 'Breathe' or 'So What'.

Other highlights: Thanx but no Thanx has a very different sound for Ministry, Uncle Al basically Lambasts his own nation over the top of a sublime reggae bassline. 'The Horror' is pretty much pure Techno, and lesson unlearned has shades of sixties Disco, especially in the vocals.

Dishonourable mention goes to second track on the album 'Punch in the Face', musically It's very good but the lyrics are fucking awful, the same line of "I'm gonna punch you in the face is repeated throughout; Crap.

So, on the whole it's quite good, and better than some of the albums they've done but It's far from their best.

Science used to be something that everyone can relate to, and enjoy. Now that it's bought and paid for by the Multi-National corps it's little more than a tool for commercialism.

Cars: in the early 1900's an electric car was built that could reach 60+ mph, over a hundred years later and still petrol engines dominate (poison) the world and it's Inhabitants.

Genetics: Human/Animal/plant genes are becoming trademarked and 'owned'. This is apparently for the 'Greater Good' but it just seems to be about making more money and having greater control over everything.

Commercial: a great deal of current scientific study seems to be geared towards the commercialization of the Human Race.
As far as I'm concerned science and the persuit of knowledge are fundamental to existence. Money isn't.

I welcome constructed feedback/comments/criticism.

Cheers  :)

Off Topic / My God's bigger than your God!

Now obviously people can believe whatever they like, but I'm becoming increasingly concerned with the strangle-hold that Organised Religion has over the World. It dominates Politics, the Media, and is still used as a benchmark for good behavior.

This is my opinion, I would like to know what others think.

Peace  :)

Off Topic / Virgin Media (dodgy service)
25 August, 2012, 10:45:43 AM
Richard Branson is once again advertising his so-called Internet service (4 times broadband/blah blah). Now for the past month my Internet advice has been pretty much non-existent. Has anyone else had problems; and if so-have you had any joy contacting them. All I'm getting from them is, "we're aware of the problem and doing our best to fix it."  :-*
