Books & Comics / Lockdown comics
13 April, 2020, 07:23:33 AM
Let's crowdsource a list of new comics that are out while the big two are on hiatus. It's a chance to support freelancing creators or to try new voices you might not have encountered otherwise.

Post paid / pay what you want / free / Patreon / Kickstarter comics here.

I'll start us off with a few:

FREE

30 new pages of Orc Stain from Jamie Stokoe on his Patreon page (available to non-subscribers)
https://www.patreon.com/posts/26558122

Brian Talbot Free Comics Compilation (pointed out by Rogue69 in the deals thread)

Four page Magneto fan comic by Sachi Ediriweera
https://www.newsarama.com/49782-creator-shares-magneto-fan-comic-while-x-men-comics-are-on-hold.html

PAY WHAT YOU LIKE (including free download option)

A selection of short comics with new ones being added weekly. One from Emily Carroll.
https://gumroad.com/shortbox

Not new, but Panel Syndicate is full of great stuff

PAID

Quarantine Comix

$1.99 for 4pg issues.

General / What to read after 9 years away?
23 September, 2019, 12:04:27 PM
I fell away from reading the prog around 2010. Kept buying weekly until I realised I had a two year backlog!

Last Dredd storyline I can definitely remember is Tour of Duty, but I think I read a bit further than that.

I'd like to start reading the prog weekly again, but would like to catch up on some of the stuff I missed in between.

Will the Day of Chaos, Trifecta and Dark Justice collections catch me up with the majority of important events?

Are there any other Dredd stories that you would recommend I'd track down either for continuity or just for being great stories? (Trades ideally or digital back issues maybe, depending on how much that would cost).

Also, what are some of the popular new non-dredd series that I've missed out on? Any in that period that are screaming to be collected but only available in back issues?

Thank you!

Nigel Auchterlounie has posted a short 2000AD related comic.

I'm hoping there'll be more.

(apologies if this has already been posted. I did google to check)

Creative Common / First short comic
03 August, 2014, 06:40:45 PM
Hi,

I recently completed my first short comic and have just put it up online.

http://www.brianmanton.com/comics/

It's a bit abstract :)

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Pay-what-you-want digital download (you can pay zero, they suggest 99c)

No plans for print collection

Really enjoyed this.  Well worth a quid.  It's done in landscape format but seems to be more dense than the 2 screens = 1 page pacing a lot of similar webcomics seem to be using.

QuoteDownload the entire collection of Magical Game Time comics in one massive 139 page PDF for whatever you're willing to pay! This PDF also includes unfinished comics, sketches, character drawings and pretty much every video game related comic that I've done to date.

Note: PDFs don't play animated gifsā€”so these comics are motionless!

All of the comics in this collection are larger than what you get online and formatted to look beautiful on an iPad or other tablet device.

BUY IT HERE! ($1 Min.)

Every purchase helps...

Earlier this week, I experienced a pretty sizable financial setback when my old computer dropped dead on me out of the blue. I lost some files (including some of the most recent comics), some time, and most of all some cold hard cash.

By purchasing this PDF, you're not only getting something cool to read but also helping me get right back to doing what I love doing...making comics!

Which reminds me! I also have a store!

Thanks!

- Zac

His animated gif comics are really great - and they do lose something when flattened for PDF - but if you pay under a quid (one dollar) or more he can get a new PC and get back to making more and posting them online for free.

http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2012/08/comic-panda-offers-satisfying-chunks-of-webcomics-in-a-vertical-format
QuoteRemember that scary Korean webcomic that everyone was passing around about a year ago?

Webcomics are huge in Korea, and now a new site, Comic Panda, has launched that brings some elements of the Korean model to the United States. While it offers free hosting for any webcomics creator, the site is particularly looking for episodic stories that can be read in big chunks in a vertical-scrolling format, like that scary comic. This is a little different from the standard webcomics model here, with its daily or thrice-weekly single-page updates.

I poked around the site a bit and found the vertical-scrolling format is pretty easy to read; I had previously encountered it on the Korean-owned site NetComics, and of course Dash Shaw uses it in Bodyworld. Still, looking at the site raised some questions for me, and fortunately Comic Panda's Chris Klein was ready with some answers.

This looks really interesting.

I've only had a quick browse of the site and none of the strips have really caught my interest, but I find the scrolling format is a really nice way to read comics on the ipad or pc.

ComicPanda's approach of free-for-everyone, creator-owned hosting alongside developed content is commendable.  I'd love to see this venture do well.

For some great comics in scrolling format have a look at
Bodyworld (as mentioned in the article) http://www.dashshaw.com/prelude.html
and Study Group Comics http://studygroupcomics.com/main/

And check out this article that looks at the effect of adapting "Secret Voice" from print to scrolling format.

Off Topic / Anyone fluent in Spanish?
11 July, 2011, 12:11:21 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm grasping at straws here, but have left this quite late and am looking for help.

I want to submit my short film to Alcine
http://www.alcine.org/inscripcion/europeanshortfilm.php?idioma=2

But I need to include Spanish subtitiles.

I've tried google translate, but on translating back the results were unusable (if hilarious).

I would massively appreciate it if anyone here, fluent in Spanish, could help.

(it's less than 300 words)

Thanks

Creative Common / Ian Rankin talks Dark Entries

He says he writes an A4 page per panel.  I'm guessing he read an Alan Moore script before any of Wagner's.

I'm sure John Wagner would have been fine with "The man walked into the pub" :D

Hi Lads,

Wasn't sure whether to post this here or in Creative Common.

I've put the trailer to my upcoming short film online.

Hope you like it.

General / Subscription to Ireland
04 December, 2010, 02:02:41 PM
I was just wondering if anyone here gets 2000AD/Megazine through subscription to Ireland?

Do they arrive in good condition?

How much extra is the postage?

I get my comics from Page45 in Nottingham via mail order, but the postage costs are getting a bit high, as I clear my orders every few months.

Also, I'd probably stay more up to date with the stories if they arrived weekly, intead of in 3inch bundles!

Thanks

General / Lobster Random - actor
20 November, 2010, 03:33:55 PM
I spotted the perfect actor to play Lobster Random while watching the latest episode of Fringe (s03e07)

His name isn't listed on the episode's IMDB page as far as I could see.

Suggestions / Yap Shop Games Night
22 July, 2010, 01:36:36 PM
During last nights yap shop a number of people had a few games of globulos.

So we got to talking about a game night.

How many people would be interested in this?

What night would be good? Tuesday or Thursday? We don't want to clash with the Yap Shop Wednesday chat.

Also... it would be good to change up the games week to week.

Possible Games: (must be free... preferably browser based & low required specs)
Globulos
Quake Live
Battlefield Heroes
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Chess

any others?

Most of us don't have X-box live or that sort of lark but maybe those of you who do should organize something on that too.

Please reply with suggestions.
