It doesn't make them any money, so it was always likely that they'd end it one day.

If you're migrating to something new, try Feedly.  It pulls your current Google Reader subscriptions, and promises to keep working after Greader goes down for good.

Or you could try The Old Reader, which is based on Google Reader and can import your Google Reader subscriptions, although it takes some time. I imagine they're overloaded with Google Reader refugees at the moment - I started importing my subscriptions this morning and it's currently telling me there are 31986 users in the import queue ahead of me.

Google Reader is easily the most useful thing Google does. So of course they're going to shut it down.
