News / Battle Action returns as original graphic novel.
06 January, 2022, 11:57:37 PM
Via CBR

"Garth Ennis, Kevin O'Neill and more revive Action for 2000 AD with Battle Action Special, a 96-page hardcover original graphic novel.

"2000AD bringing back the controversial British comic series Action.

"The newly titled Battle Action Special is a 96-page hardcover original graphic novel featuring eight new stories, all written by The Boys co-creator Garth Ennis. He's joined by artists Kevin O'Neill, Keith Burns, Mike Dorey, John Higgins, Chris Burnham, Patrick Goddard and PJ Holden, as well as colorists Jason Wordie, Len O'Grady and Sally Jane Hurst.

"The original Action debuted in 1976 and was published by IPC Magazines. Created by Pat Mills, Mike Dorey and more, the series was notable for putting its own unique spin on classic action stories like Jaws. It also helped pave the way for more adult comic titles, like the aforementioned 2000 AD and the books published under DC's Vertigo Comics imprint.

"Take to the skies with artist Keith Burns and colourist Jason Wordie, and witness the air duel of the century as ace fighter pilot Johnny Red faces off against Skreamer of the Stukas.

"Infamous German tank commander Hellman of Hammer Force bears down on American Colonel Glory Rider in Tunisia, drawn by the legendary Mike Dorey (Ro-Busters).

"Blunt instrument of British Intelligence Dredger returns and takes no prisoners on the streets of 1980s London, courtesy of Watchmen colourist and Judge Dredd artist John Higgins, with co-colours by Sally Jane Hurst.

"Take on the selfish but fearless Crazy Keller by Chris Burnham (Batman) and colours by Len O'Grady, and meet Nina Petrova, the scourge of the Eastern Front, with art by Patrick Goddard (Judge Dredd) and colours by Jason Wordie.

"And roll out into Italy in the heat of 1944 with The Sarge as Ennis reunites with The Stringbags artist PJ Holden.

"Battle Action Special goes on sale in June from 2000 AD before arriving in traditional bookstores in September.

Books & Comics / Edgy to write The Avengers
27 April, 2014, 07:25:32 AM
The proper Avengers.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/04/22/boom-announces-uber-stylish-spy-fi-series-steed-and-mrs-peel/

Boom! announces today that there's going to be a new 6-part series debuting in July capturing the spirit of the classic British spy-fi TV series from the 60's, The Avengers, titled Steed and Mrs. Peel. The limited series will be written by the celebrated writer on Vertigo's Hinterkind, Ian Edginton, who's also known for his collaboration with I.N.J. Culbard on Selfmade Hero's well received series of Sherlock Holmes graphic novels.

Artist Marco Cosentino of Grimm Fairy Tales and cover artist Stacey Lee join Edginton in bringing these two iconic Avengers characters to a new medium. It's a return to the roots of spy fiction grounded in iconic style and witty dialogue drawing on over 50 years of Avengers tradition. But this isn't just a homage piece. Edginton and Cosentino are taking John Steed and Emma Peel on a "psychedelic" hunt on the trail of a new conspiracy.

Look out for the new series in July, and watch for an upcoming interview with Ian Edginton about the project here at Bleeding Cool.

Looks like Stevie's gonna have to emigrate.

DJ Food and Henry Flint will present an exhibition of artwork from the upcoming Food album The Search Engine and Henry Flint's book Broadcast, at the Pure Evil Gallery in London between 26 January and 12 February 2012.

The exhibition will feature drawings and elements used to create most of the artwork surrounding the album, with high quality signed giclee prints available to buy as well as a limited edition postcard record made specially for the show. An audio visual installation in the basement, based around the album, will also be present.

Upon buying some art from Henry a few years ago, Kev discovered several postcards with crazed characters and abstracts included in the package, promotion for a small local exhibition in Exeter of Henry's 'doodles'. The images were exactly what he had been looking for as the starting point for the artwork on a series of EPs he was making, later to form an album on Ninja Tune. Henry sent a stack of images for Kev to pick from and gave him permission to colour them for the artwork, which were issued as foldout poster covers on three 12" EPs.

By the time the album was ready to be compiled Kev had a solid visual direction and commissioned Henry to draw "a cosmonaut, hanging in space, strapped into an unfeasibly large backpack, the kind you could only wear in zero gravity". The result became the cover of The Search Engine. Coupled with press shots of Kev in a replica astronaut suit, shot by photographer Will Cooper-Mitchell, this completed a sci-fi theme with Kev's colours fleshing out the black and white line drawings. Incidentally, since the start of the collaboration, Henry was approached by a publisher with a view to compiling these drawings into a book, which has just been published under the title Broadcast by Aam Markosia.

Plus Damnation Station &  Dredd:

Quote
It seems "2000AD" is really pushing your work lately, advertising your projects more prominently, bringing you to conventions and making promotional material for your work -- last year's "Zombo" mask comes to mind, in particular. Do you get the impression that you're being set up to be the next John Wagner, Gordon Rennie or Pat Mills?

I don't think John Wagner is going to go anywhere anytime soon. I think if anybody's setting me in that position, it's a few fans who are saying it. There's always somebody who's the next Wagner. It's been Garth Ennis, it's been Gordon Remmy and I've been the next Wagner for a while. Now, I think Michael Carroll is getting pushed. He's really good. He's getting a few people to say they want him to take over "Judge Dredd" when Wagner can no longer write it. There's been all these people, though, and Wagner's still here.

Nice one!

Oooh, & what's this...?

Quote

I'd really like to get in to writing more Judge Dredd. I'm doing the Christmas episodes this year, and I've got a couple more at the beginning of next year. There's also something quite huge that's in the pipeline. I'm going to be quite cagey about it at the minute. In the future, a couple of other people are going to be talking to CBR about it, and it's going to be huge.

General / Storming the International Comics Society
21 November, 2011, 06:16:24 AM
Do you believe that you man / woman / mek / phlondrutian* enough to take on the International Comics Society?

This is a closed group on Facebook comprised mostly of peeps who have jumped shipped the CBR forums like Duy Tano.

The admins try to broaden the erudite discussion across the comics spectrum but, as you can well imagine, the current membership remains, like Frazer Irving & magenta, focused upon undies on the outside.

So Stevie's putting a prog posse together.

Not only will this redress the balance what with Tharg's Stateside push & that upcoming fillum but it will educate these tights-wearing funny book readers onthe best gruddamn comics in the galaxy to boot

The cold boot of the Law that is.

If you're thinking that you need another place to bang on about comics online like Rogue Trooper needs another reboot then put it this way:

Some of these fanboys think themselves to be bad ass bloggers so even if you merely wish to show 'em how it's done by pimping your own then your work is done.

Same goes for any comics that you're involved with. Richmond, Stargazing, Goaty et al – this means YOU.

They also lap original art so you can also share 'em what real artists produce instead of the daubings of bedwetting Limey chimpanzees when the lights are turned out.  ;)

You'll be under no obligation to participate more actively than you wish.  Feel free to even cut & paste your reviews from this board there.

If this sounds like your cup of pixel-joe then hit up Stevie on Facebook or PM him here.

The esteemed Grant Groggans is thre already so why let him have all the fun?

News / HENRY FLINT vs DJ FOOD
12 October, 2011, 01:25:01 AM
The latest bout in this cosmic thrillpower vs beatchowder smackdown.

DJ Food — Magpies, Maps and Moons
ZEN12299

Released 07/11/2011

Finishing the trilogy of EPs started in 2009 with One Man's Weird Is Another Man's World and The Shape of Things That Hum, comes Magpies, Maps and Moons. Another five track 12", wrapped in a poster cover by 2000ad comic artist Henry Flint, and featuring more collaborations to add to the growing Food roster.

In vocal form we have JG Thirlwell - aka Foetus, Steroid Maximus and Manorexia amongst many others - providing a vocal for the lead track, "Prey". Having been a fan of JG's work since the late 80's this was a dream come true for Strictly Kev who remixed a Foetus track for free, alongside Amon Tobin on 2002's Blow album for Thirlwell, on the provision that they collaborate in the future.

The other collaboration comes from London resident Aaron Thomason aka 2econd Class Citizen on the 11 minute plus audio montage, "Magpie Music". The two met up earlier this year after Kev had raved about Aaron's debut LP A World Without on Germany's Equinox label. Rather than sit down and work on a single song the pair decided to swap samples and create short pieces in isolation before comparing and critiquing them, then remixing and working them into a long form piece.

All this, with various tracks from the previous EPs, will add up to the album, The Search Engine, released in Jan 2012, which cherry picks the best 10 tracks, remixing or editing them along the way, and adds a final collaboration to boot.

General / Shakara does a Sky Chariots
25 September, 2011, 08:59:51 AM
Courtesy of Ninja Tune design bod Strictly Kev:

QuoteShakara Book3 'the defiant' was inked on tracing paper over very sparse pencils on A3 paper. I have the pencils to all of these too which are basic in comparison to the inks. But the inks were then scanned and additional backgrounds, effects and colouring were added in the computer which make the ink seem minimal. I should do a 3 stage comparison because the final art is incredible, and these inked pages don't do it justice.

That photo does look oddly suspicious

Giant asteroid to hurtle past Earth

An asteroid with a diameter of 400m will make its closest approach to Earth later this year.

Known as YU55, the asteroid would fly within the moon's orbit narrowly missing Earth, according to reports.

"The space rock will hurtle past our planet at a distance of just 201,700 miles (324,600km) during its closest approach on November 8," The Daily Mail has reported.

"That is closer to Earth than the moon, which orbits 238,857 miles (384,400km) away on average.

"With a width of some 400m and weighing 55 million tons, YU55 will be the largest object to ever approach Earth."

But US space agency NASA said there was no cause for concern.

"Although classified as a potentially hazardous object, 2005 YU55 poses no threat of an Earth collision over at least the next 100 years," NASA said.

"However, this will be the closest approach to date by an object this large that we know about in advance and an event of this type will not happen again until 2028."

NASA spokesman Don Yeomans said YU55's gravitational pull on planet Earth would be immeasurably miniscule.

It would not affect the tides "or anything else", he said.

If YU55 were to hit Earth, it would exert a force the equivalent of 65,000 atomic bombs and leave a crater 10km wide and 610m deep, The Mail said.

"It orbits the sun once every 14 years but will not collide with Earth for at least a century," the report said.

"Scientists around the world have long been discussing ways of deflecting potentially hazardous asteroids to prevent them hitting Earth.

"One of the more popular methods is to detonate a nuclear warhead on an approaching asteroid to deflect it from its orbital path.

"Last year, physicist David Dearborn of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the US argued that nuclear weapons could be the best strategy for avoiding an asteroid impact - especially for large asteroids and with little warning time."
