Prog / Prog 2250 - Get zapped to the future with the Galaxy's Greatest Comic
« on: 18 September, 2021, 06:02:46 PM »
Well that's a lovely cover, all be it with a clunky tag line! Inside we're in good order as well.

Dredd villains put the gang together, Dredd prepares for a chat and Maitland dodges a bullet. Set up, but cut to the action by the end. Nice enough.

Damn the subs freebies on the page after Dredd - some of the best yet - a facsimile of Prog 0 (the proposal Prog). I don't quite qualify but damn this is tempting!

Diaboliks like Dredd quickly puts pieces into place and its an intriguing place and look forward to this moving forward.

Then a nice Tharg Star Scan by David Millgate.

Now Scarlet Traces was an ace. It too was a set up and if I'm honest I started this with a bit of dread, but quite remembering were we are up to... but this one does it all, recaps, sets the scene and moves us onto the next phase of things, but you don't notice the mechanics at work. D'israeli delightfully realising Edginton's trippy start and hellish ending. Wonderful stuff and worries quickly dismissed.

As they were with Anderson one off Anderson's of late haven't always ticked the boxes but this one works perfectly Maura McHugh keeps it self contained, but moves things into place for the next phase of her story. Okay so maybe not self contained with that cliffhanger but it works as an episode and I'm already hankering for what comes next. Lee Carter has switched some buttons on his dial and his colour and tone work the dark atmosphere perfectly. Loved this one, to my surprise if I'm honest.

Pandora Perfect - Mystery Moon again masters the set up trick really well. it gives us a frothy intro to the character, a cheeky double cross and an offer for what's to come. This is just perfect fun.

Okay Chris Western I know this was a Future Shock driven by the pun at the end BUT when you present it like that - come on don't leave us hangin' Lone Wolf and Grub is a series you could make work. A star child take on the classic. Get ya writing cap on and don't leave this as a silly gag.

And we go out with The Out and it gets us up to speed and like others sets up what to come perfectly well. Its a great opener but as some of the other wears it mechanics on it sleeves - mind when the sleeves are suich glorious out on the rim colours colliding wonders who cares what mechanics they expose. Super excited by this one.

So yeah if latest weeks Prog was a real let down this one shows just how quickly the Prog can bounce back and the thrill ride being an avid follower of Tharg can be. Just a fantastic comic.

Traitor to his kind vs. The Beast of Milton Keynes - Bolt-01 Cup - Group 4 Game 2

So after so much faffling in the over complex qualifying we get down to the top end action as the last 16 face-off and today we have 2 games from, can you guess... Group 4. As ever though...

All you need to worry about which is your favourite between:

Traitor to his Kind - more info

Vs

The Beast of Milton Keynes - more info

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite of these two stories at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Sunday 19th September and the winner (I’ll count up who gets the most votes basically) gets 3 points towards qualifying… huh…

… there’s a spreadsheet to make following easier… if you fancy. If not, don’t worry just VOTE!!!!

I’ve tried to explain the finals here.

What on Earth is ALL of this?

Why on Tharg’s Earth head are we doing this?

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN!

Oh and my ‘More info’ links… well I don’t say how much more and they get pretty wonky at times!

General / The FINALS!!! - Bolt-01 Cup - Favourite Strontium Dog
« on: 12 September, 2021, 07:29:52 AM »
So at last we’re done with the convoluted play-offs - over, finished and we’re down to the tourney proper, The Finals, with 16 thrills competing for the coveted Bolt-01 Trophy.

Now then to keep with the World Cup type vibe I was going for here I’m going to stick with groups in the first round. NOW I know these weren’t popular, but I’m hoping the format here will make it much easier for folks to keep things straight.

Basically there will be four groups of four and each day we will get two ties from one group, running Monday - Thursday, barring any delays or cock-ups on my part. Meaning Round 1 should last 3 weeks.

This also results in each thrill appearing once a week and no more… hopefully it will all seem much more straightforward… hopefully.

Mind as ever all you need to worry about if you can’t be arsed thinking about all that is answering the simple question in front of you. Which of the two thrills in each match do you prefer. What could be easier!?!

Anyway come back in a bit and I’ll reveal the thrills in each Group… EXCITING!!!!

… well it is… for me… a bit…

Prog / Prog 2249 - Her father's PSIs
« on: 11 September, 2021, 08:45:22 PM »
What's better than a Prog landing on your door matt on a Saturday morning, two progs landing on your door Matt on a Saturday morning... weird I got two delievers of this Prog, have no clue why , so if anyone misses this one let me know and I'll pop my extra across... not that I think I've got someones elses, just for whatever reason two of my address sheets got printed off??

What's better than two Prog 2249 landing on your door matt on a Saturday morning... well if I'm being honest one of a good Prog... sorry this issue is weak and feels all of the issue before a relaunch Prog.

There are of course positives and they appear at the beginning and the end. Dredd ends really nicely and is a great antidote to that style that Neimand has developed, not that his normal stories are bad, just the opposite, I love them. They were however developing a theme and tone of more upbeat insights into citizens, often (not always) with upbeat endings. Here its as if he's trying to prove his range and going to the opposite end of the spectrum with a dark ending to the dark horror of this story.

Then we get the 3 in the 3riller... I mean it was just doing things by the numbers. This one washed over me I'm afraid.

And then we get to the biggest frustration of the issue the end of Skip Tracer, which feels very much like the end. Nothing said I don't see this coming back (???) but I actually hope it does... why its  not a strip I've enjoyed to date, though its been building some momentum of late. The previous story was decent, this one good, not perfect but good and the introduction of his daughter I thought could make this story move into interesting places.

Instead we get a fumbled ending. Rushed and unsatisfying. Rooted in the cliche that still blight this series and well... maybe if it'd got another go or two it could have surprised and pushed to places. My guess (???) is we'll never know now.

Another John Tomlinson Terror Tale another miss I don't have the time and energy to investigate this any deeper than the struggling surface read it got first time. It just drifted from me and gave me no reason to pull it back... nice art aside

Jaegir now this was good BUT good in relation to the rest of the Prog and if it was in a stronger Prog I'd have bemoaned the fact it was clearly placing pieces for what coming next. As it is I relished it.

So yeah alas I got two of this Prog one of the weakest I can remember for a long, long time... BUT heck fresh lineup next week and one I have much hope for. So it is with the Prog, for ever dip (and they are rare these days) there's a fresh rise just around the corner.

The Glum Affair vs The Gronk Affair - Bolt-01 Cup - Play-offs - Who cares!

Well after weeks of convoluted nonsense it will be a blessed relief to learn that for the final two spots in the finals we just have two straight knockouts today… yep simple as that. Don’t worry about how they got here, just know that whoever wins both of today’s ties has a place in the finals (the tourney proper). Simple as that, so I mean it when I say….

Other Reviews / Lawless
« on: 07 September, 2021, 07:01:20 AM »
Over a weekend away and while at a very long swimming session last night* I've read the three Lawless trades currently available. And the first thing to say is why the heck are these trades? Why, oh why can't we get an over-sized hardback(s) of this wonder? Its a simply amazing strip and never has art more deserved the big page and quality paper to pull out magnificence in all its glory. That's not to say that Phil Winslade's art is my favourite art - I mean its damned close but maybe not my absolute favourite - rather that its intricate, precise linework deserves a platform on which it can be admired in all its exquisite detail. Its astonishing stuff and his ability to retain such life, energy, character and movement and not have it drown in its own detail is incredible.

Then you get to the story. Now its fair to say this one plays with things that exactly hit my wheel house. Never in Tharg's world has a western been so western. No not Strontium Dog, not even American Gothic. No this is the most western of strips. The tone, the dialogue, heck the art makes things feel dusty - all play towards this perfectly. The mysterious stranger coming into town, initially a lone gumhand all play with this. Even when it becomes all out war it becomes The Alamo. And I adore westerns.

Add to that talking apes and you have the perfect set up for me.

Put its so much more than that, its the characters. Metta Lawson is a hardcore delight, the real star of the show Nerys Pettifer is a refreshingly charming un2000ad wonder. Both so richly realised. Then add a supporting cast, each, even if only appearing for panels, well crafted, beautifully rendered it really is the character driven piece so many comics claim to be.

Then add to that the action and events are just drop dead perfectly timed, and this really comes to the fore in the trades. In the Megs as it came some of the momentum is lost a little, but read in trade the timing is seen in all its glory, particularly in the buildup to Munce's epic attempt to wipe out Badrock - which speaking of character really achieves that elusive trick of making a character of place - it just build and builds, holding the tension driving things up. Then when the battle strikes its realised in a way that is rarely achieved in any medium.

There's another level as well with this larger overarching story there are the episodic moments - that Dabnett does so well in Brink - that stand alone and build onto the whole. A prime example being the moment Pettifer goes into the mec-church to stop a hold-up and gun a man down. Pettifer coming of age in this western frontier, but that moment, hard and edifying as it is has impact and importance down the line as the seeming moment of transition has a much deeper impact as the story develops. Just brilliant.

So yeah I love, LOVE this series.

To be honest the only question that remains is whether its my favourite ever in The House of Tharg (can't say the Prog). That begs the question is it better than Dante? Can Brink top it when read as one, The Out when it has more time... you know what the advantage Lawless has in being a true western, the consistancy in the art mean I think I might call this now (and regret that at my leisure) Lawless is the greatest comic ever from Thargs Organs.

There said it!

*Clearly I wasn't swimming my daughter was - I'd never get my comics wet!
