This was cancelled wasn't it?

I remember hearing a rumour that Rebellion briefly took over the project after Free Radical went tits-up, before it got canned entirely.

Last I heard EA/DICE were working on a Call of Duty/Battlefront style Star Wars FPS.

That looks like battlefront on the PS2..?

DICE have been working on the next gen battlefornt - should be good based on their Battlefield/Bad Company work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Battlefront_(DICE)

Star Wars: Battlefront is an upcoming action video game in development by EA Digital Illusions CE and to be published by Electronic Arts. It is scheduled for release in mid-2015 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.[3] The game is the third main entry in the Star Wars: Battlefront series, and the first since 2005's Star Wars: Battlefront II.

Development[edit]

In May 2013, publisher/developer Electronic Arts obtained exclusive rights to develop Star Wars games for gaming consoles, and its subsidiaries DICE, Visceral Games, and BioWare started work on Star Wars games.

DICE first acknowledged the game at Electronic Arts' E3 2013 press conference, along with a teaser trailer.[4] The game is built with the Frostbite 3 engine; studio head Patrick Söderlund stated that the game would be "DICE's interpretation of what Battlefront should be", while still incorporating elements from the previous two games. As such, DICE did not brand the new game as a sequel to Battlefront II, but a reboot of the franchise.[1][5] Söderlund said that the game almost wasn't developed, but that staffers at DICE lobbied to be given the project; he called DICE's development of Battlefront "a match made in heaven".[6]

In June 2014, it was revealed at EA's E3 2014 press conference that the planet Hoth and the moon Endor would be playable maps for the game.[7]

I like how there's blokes in the comments complaining that the lightsaber duels need to be more realistic.

He's right - the games never reflect how easy it is to cut through anything with a lightsaber.

That's the most exciting Star Wars thing I've seen all year - bloody amazing. I was addicted to BFII - this looks astounding!

Shame I'll probably never have the hardware to play it :'(

Looks awesome! But does that map looks bit small?
Title: Re: star wars battlefront "leaked footage"

well it's not 62 player like BF4 only 40 so smallish maps shouldn't be too much of a problem, but I think the Hoth level looks pretty big ?
So that's my game for the year sorted, Battlefield + Starwars I don't think I could've asked for a better present.  At last I can prise BF4 out of my Xbone 400+hrs on BF4 and still playing :)

I can never shake the notion that by the time you've hit your third decade it's probably an idea to have moved past playing Soldiers, so I'll probably not bother with this - but it really does look the biz.

Oh hey, online multiplayer was fun for a bit back in the day, but after twenty minutes going in circles shooting things, I wanted a bit more involvement, not just better graphics or more balanced reload times.  As good as this looks, it's really nothing more than a fancy mod.

Horses for courses and all that.

Aside from split-screen GoldenEye 007/Perfect Dark back in the day I've never really seen the appeal of competitive deathmatch gaming - and when gaming started getting more and more online multiplayer focused is where I started to tune out of the medium. I always saw multiplayer to be more of a nice bonus, not the main event, and I broadly agree that running round the same old levels over and over again gets dull very quickly. I was always more into the exploration/adventuring side of gaming, whereas deathmatch is more akin to team sports which I have zero interest in to begin with.

The other problem I have with online is that you basically have a dozen overpowered one-man-armies running and hopping around which leads to combat so ludicrously fast-paced and frenetic it breaks any sense of immersion for me - doubly so in something set in the Star Wars universe.

I'm sure there's a game out there more suited to my tastes, but I haven't really got the time to find it. Maybe one day.

The good thing about the DICE multiplayer games is the squad dynamic. If you get a bunch of pals playing different classes squadding up you are unstoppable. I can't shoot for shit, but I can heal, revive and plant mines like the best of them, so when in a team of assault and engineer, that communicates well, gameplay takes on a whole new dimension.

Plus DICE are good at the semi-destructible environments, meaning you can change tactics on the fly, going through buildings instead of around them to avoid hotspots and choke points.

Finally, the sheer variety of vehicles generally available on each map, all with strengths and weaknesses, add to the fun.

Every DICE multiplayer game I've played, and in particular played squadded up with buddies, has been an absolute blast. I've been playing BF4 on and off for over a year now, and still ain't bored of it!

I'm hoping Star Wars Battlefront has all of the above, plus new dynamics through a variety of sci-fi style classes, plus with what looks to be a totally incredible Star Wars skin.

In summary, I am probably more excited about this game than I am the new film.

My mind has been read!  Even down to the Goldeneye!

It does look pretty but it does look very frantic to the extent that I almost couldn't keep track of what was going on - and the Co-Op mode on Tatooine seemed completely unrealistic in terms of the number of enemy troops and vehicles being killed and destroyed.

If I did play it, I would imagine I would manage about a dozen 30 minute to one hour blasts on it before giving up and going back to Resident Evil where I can explore and sort out puzzles and engage in slighly more realistic unrealistic combat.

I'm really on the fence about this one.

On one hand it looks incredible but on the other it is an EA / Dice game so it will be buggy as hell on release and probably pushed out the door whether it's ready or not. Then there will be the cluster-fuck of DLC that will fragment the player base.

I'll probably wait until the price drops and it's been patched up a bit before buying.

One thing that is almost guaranteed is that the servers won't be able to cope on day of release. That's happened with DICE in Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 4. Considering how many extra copies will fly out the door because of the Star Wars skin, I can't see how it would be possible not to expect problems.

That ain't stopping me though getting it though. :D

all this and more Monkey, like Radiator I was not a deathmatch multiplayer fan but my first brushings with Battlefield Bad Company 2 changed all that, I had dabbled in COD's before but as Radiator mentions too fast and all the same, BF is the complete experience, having an off day and cant hit a wall at 10m, go lay some mines out and spend your time repairing vehicles, find a nest of good guy snippers and throw them some ammo, hell just use C4 to drop annoying buildings that enemy snipers are camping on (even better find some of those camping snipper dogs sneak up and drop some C4 on them :)) it truly is a game for all seasons, putting a lovely Starwars skin on it may just make it my favourite game ever!!!

I have visions of small groups of Ewoks force leaping into battle with clubs of wood.  As they almost magically ignite with flames appearing to spread from halt to tip.

Kind of like that bit from Eragon when the young hero's mentor did the same thing with his sword.

Because they just don't have the tech to make their own light-sabres. I figured they would optimise.

I think somebody agrees.....

Then I thought about Cloned-Ewok-Troopers wearing the white-plate-armour.....

Maybe the armour doesn't fit properly.

So everybody is playing this and might I have ago once I get the download to work. It's on Origin, and I had an account there ever since I brought Sims Four. Wonder my copy of that game is now. I just have'nt played since a short while after installing it and then having to uninstall it again.

Getting back on subject.....

This sounds interesting and I at loss for wether this picture here is actual a photo of young Skywalker.....

(https://media.starwars.ea.com/content/starwars-ea-com/en_US/starwars/battlefront/news-articles/the-heroes-of-star-wars--battlefront---luke-skywalker/_jcr_content/featuredImage.img.jpg)

I realise it couldn't be for obvious reasons and that this level of realism in games is also actually a bit of a worry. it's opening another avenue for fraud ...people can be replaced so easily by pixels now.

As for the beta release...am I missing anything.

Sadly I was away this weekend (well, not sadly actually - had an awesome time) so I missed the majority of the Beta.  However, I did manage to try out the two multiplayer modes last night.

It has to be said, Walker Assault on Hoth is just bloody brilliant!!  My daughter had a go too, and squealed with delight every time an AT-AT or AT-ST hoved into view.

I totally agree with the above re Vader - he force choked my buddy then slashed me with the saber.  It was a real sphincter loosening moment.

I didn't get a chance to try out any vehicles, which was a shame - I'm really looking forward to the Fighter Squadron element.  I always thought the Star Wars universe would lend itself well to a dogfighting gameplay kinda thing.

Managed to play about an hour of the beta, it was fun and pushed my Star Wars excitement buttons, but it's not the kind of shooter I can see myself ever being good at! In those frantic big skirmish games I tend to just die a lot without contributing, which can be depressing.

Yeah, there are a few single player modes - although there was only one on the Beta. It was pretty good - the usual fighting off increasingly harder waves of Imperials. It was single player and co-op.

Ah, I didn't even spot that option, wish I'd tried it now! A Gears style horde mode in the Star Wars universe could be amazing. Holding off increasingly tough and insane waves of imperials, with the walkers and stuff coming in late-on...yeah that could be my cup of tea.

There were only five of (I think) the fifteen waves that'll be in the full game. Being chased around the canyons of Tatooine by an AT-ST was quite an experience!

Anyone playing this?  got it yesterday on Xbone.  Good fun, plenty of modes looks absolutely stunning, I'm still trying to get the hang of the Hero characters, I guess I should play the single player training a bit more but I cant help but jump into the multiplayer.  I play in first person mode but third person is playable if you prefer to play that way, when playing a Hero it forces you into it.  The X-wing/Tie combat is quite well done, I have no idea what the controls are but somehow it works and is really easy to fly.
Back to the graphics, I've not seen Starwars ever look this good, it's nearly beyond the Prequel CGI quality, I'd love to see this on a super PC.  The laser blast sparks are spot on and top it off.
Well I'm off to bed half day of work tomorrow then another 12 hours in battling Rebel scum!

Funny how people see games differently, my mate who is staying with us at the moment bought it and we played a bit last night. Storming Hoth as Vader we both thought was thoroughly dull. Nothing can hurt you so you just wander about swinging your laser sword. Bringing down an AT-AT was identical to rogue squadron on the little purple box of joy. Fun but nothing that hadn't been done 10 years ago. Glad you're enjoying it, I'm off back to Fallout 4 though :D

Funny, that's what I've been thinking about Fallout 4 - good fun, but has mostly been done before a few years ago in Fallout 3.  ;)

Anyway, some more thoughts:

Fighter Squadron - remarkably easy to pick up and play, easily controllable, but a bit too easy.  I was hoping for something akin to 1943's Coral Sea map which involved consideration of turning angles, speed, and how that tactically gives you advantages/disadvantages.  In Fighter Squadron you can turn on a pin, and targeting an opponent is quite easy.  For added fun and difficulty, fly in cockpit mode - very cinematic, and loses some of your peripheral vision, making it slightly tougher.

Walker Assault - four maps, each with pros and cons.  I've been having a lot of fun exploring them, figuring out where power-ups crop up the most often, and tactical advantages for ground infantry at various points.  Plus each unlock adds more 'class' variation - I love the freedom to play as you wish, and I'm turning into a bit of a vehicle takedown expert.  With ion boosted blasters, ion grenades and a missile launcher AT-STs don't last long in front of me!  These are all very helpful against the AT-ATs too, and I can usually get into a position where I can hit their sensitive spots.  It all adds a nice little variety to gameplay.

Squad dynamic - not as useful as I'd hoped.  I haven't managed to get my usual Battlefield compadres into a group yet, so not sure how a 'friend squad' works, but the game currently puts you into a team of two, rather than four or five as in previous Battlefield iterations.  This can make the experience quite tough, as once you're both down, you have to spawn at a point quite far back in the field.  Also, there doesn't seem to be any complementary type of squadding up.  For example I can't go as support/medic and expect the other dude to pick demo or assault - there's no way to tell what equipment each other has until we use it.  This makes teamwork  quite tricky.

Still, it's a bloody great game, and if you're into online shooters, and love Star Wars, this is definitely worth a look!

I'll have to try some of the other game modes soon and report back.

yeah I'm a Freddy no friends so I find the squad spawn pretty weak as it is only on one person not a choice of 5 so lots of slogging it, though it does lead to less re-spawn deaths.  Slight lack of variation in the main weapons too, you kind of have Fast Blasters, Slow Blasters and Hand Blasters but they all seem pretty samey to me.
Still loving it though, need to learn to fly, every time I get a Tie fighter to take it to the rebel scum I get blasted straight away by uber pilots :(

Is there anyone out there having problems with EA? I bought Battlefront for the Lad at Xmas but there seems to be some problem with connecting his old EA account with his Xbox Live account. I've asked for a password confirmation but I haven't received a reply. I've tried creating another account and adding him as a friend but to no avail as his profile is still tied to the old account!
