Rescued comics and what should a comics-noob do with 'em?

First off, apologies for the huge post. I have tried, but I'm unable to be concise and always end up waffling on at length. Just like this sentence here. It's not necessary, so why am I writing it? And yet I am writing it, and what's more, you're reading it. Grab a cuppa and a seat!

As I wrote in another thread, I have wound up owning a bunch of boxes of comics ear-marked for the skip after being flood-damaged. I've had these for many years now, and whilst I cleaned them up, had a superficial stock-take, and re-boxed them at the time, it's only in the last year or so that I have really sorted through them properly to work out what I've got, and what might be worth keeping and reading.

I know very little about most of these titles as I've not been back into comics all that long, beyond a handful of anthology titles that I grew up with.

There are lots of damages, but also loads that are undamaged (by the flood, anyway, and are presumably in more or less the same condition they were in when they went into the boxes - not always mint, and probably not much use to a collector, but fine for a reader).

I started a spreadsheet at the end of last year and it took about 6 months on and off to go through approx 3000 comics and work out what they all were and group them into series (as far as I could work out from information online). It's all very confusing.

There are plenty that appear to be a full run of a title, a complete short series, or a one-shot. Amongst these there are comics that I'm curious about enough to try reading, but also plenty that I've no idea if they're any good or not. I don't know which ones are worth reading!

In addition to that, there are also loads that are incomplete. These ones might be worth finding fills for, but, again, I don't know! (In fact I have already filled a fair number of series that looked interesting when I found issues for pennies here and there, so really this list is an amalgamation of the original rescues and fills, but I haven't kept a record of which are my own purchases.)

A small number I've read already, and some of the well-known ones I'll certainly read eventually (V for Vendetta, From Hell). Already on the list of keepers is Shade (1990) thanks to Colin YNWA who also is responsible for me starting this thread (ably assisted by BadlyDrawnKano)

There are also titles that I'm pretty sure I don't care about. I don't like cartoon-style art, and this, for me, includes manga, and I don't much like the mainstays of the superhero genre (Superman, Spider-man, the Hulk, the Flash, Justice League, etc). Also not keen on Westerns. Unless there are any remarkable runs recommended to me to fill, I may not bother with those. However, I won't discount anyone's heartfelt recommendation!

I need help deciding what to keep, what to fill, and what to read!

So the questions I have are things like:
Is it any good?
Is it more-or-less a stand-alone story that can be read in isolation?
Do I *need* any fore-knowledge before I tackle it? ie, anything I should get/read first? and would needing that make it less worth buying fills?
Would it benefit from reading something else first?
Would it be better *not* to read previous related series?
How big a rabbit hole will it take me down?
Can I jump in after issue #1 or jump out before the run is done? Or do I need to get all the missing issues to be able to read it?
Would it be better to pick up TPBs or try to get fills? Cost and availability of TPBs, HCs and fill-issues is obviously a factor in this too.

If anyone fancies replying, no-one needs to cover every one in one reply, in fact, it might be interesting to get a longer take on some titles if it's warranted.

Black lines are series that I think are complete, or one-shots.
Green lines are titles that I've read (not many yet from this bunch of rescued comics)
Blue lines are series that are missing issues.
Red lines are ones with issues damaged beyond hope of reading. The quantity that I've stated I have includes the damages. (Other issues are damaged within some titles but are still readable and I've not noted those here.)

Okay not gone through this in detail yet but some immediately jump out and I'll tackle the remaining post asap (this is just the first - but from a very quick scan there's good stuff in the others too)

Animal - dependent on the issues they could be the brilliant Morrison run (issues 1 -26).

Angela is Neil Gaiman - not read it but think folks like that one.

Astro City gets bigged up by a lot of folks

Bacchus - Is quite superb

Bone amazing

Cerebus - Well the first 200 issues (some say 150) are quite astonishingly good

Concrete - absolutely top

There is going to be some really good stuff in the Cheval Noir (US anthology reprint of French (typically) meterial) and Dark Horse Presents - US Anthology with some very good stuff including Concrete and Bacchus material.

Doom Patrol - I'm going to guess you have the Morrison run there 19-60ish I'm not the biggest fan (though I love other Grant Morrison) but some folks will say its his best work.

Shame you don't have more Flaming Carrot.

Some of the stuff about will be VERY high in my top 100!

Animal Man is a bit all over the place. I have #s 1, 2, 7-32, 62-68, 84, 87-89
with #16 has had some rat nibblin' at it I think. They all need a good wipe with a clean cloth.

Doom Patrol I have #s 5, 14-18, 19-26, 31-63, 64-87
with #85 being a bit more ropey than the others but readable.

Cerebus has lots damaged, but most still readable, but very few consecutive issues whether damaged or not. I'd more or less decided to get TPBs of that if it was worth reading. And it seem that it may be

I like the look of The Metabarons (after having looked at only the nice pictures - no reading), so I was curious about that one.

Ohhh so you have most the Morrison run well worth filling the gaps - though 5 can get pricey, widely considered one of the great comics. Video on issue 5 that gives you a good sense of the run as a whole.

Be aware Cerebus gets very problematic as Dave Sim the creator had something of a breakdown and has some very unpleasent (to say the least) views. Which wash into the series from issue 186 onwards. My fav YouTube channel Strange Brain Parts has a really good summary - and individual videos for the first 7 or so books or so.

I've not read Metabarons beyond the first couple of volumes. I didn't get on with it but I know it has fans in these parts.

I'm a big fan of ther 1987 Wally West Flash run. Its one of my favourite mainstream superhero runs BUT if mainstream superhero comics aren't your bag. If you pop the issues up I can suggest some to have a go with to see if you'll like what you have.

I really enjoyed For a few troubles more back in the day but not read it for years. Early Ennis take on the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland.

From Hell is considered by many as Alan Moore, say no more!

Hate is brilliant and well worth tracking down the missing issues.

Hellblazer might be worth listing the issues you have to see what runs you have there.

Folks are very keen on the Justice League (1-6) 1987 which runs straight into Justice League International (1987) then into those Justice League America (1989) comics you have. Stop at 60 when it changes creative teams ans direction significently. Its the same run. Very popular series that defies the typical DC comics style by being very funny. I'm not the biggest fan but it works for so many folks worth trying.

Liberty Meadows - love those stories though maybe a little dated now? Might be worth just dipping in as reprints of a comic strip. There a load on that second list that I'd mention but you don't have enough yet and there's so much good reading in what you have, or just need a bit of to keep you going for a while.

Everyone likes to sit in their own thought bubble and be comfortable, and when they come across ideas that aren't what they're used to hearing they either close down or strike out, and only sometimes figuratively speaking.

The more different views or perspectives that are listened to honestly, the more they will be considered and factored in to a more rounded opinion of the world and that there humanity that's in it. If I don't listen to an alternate viewpoint, I can't formulate a cogent response to it if it's troubling, and so any argument I have against it is going to sound flat and worthless as a response. Screaming "You're just like Trump!" or "Effing wokeflake" is not going to make anyone think you've got a great point.

I'll hear anyone's ideas regardless of how distasteful I think it might be, because somewhere at the core of it there might be a kernel of a valid point, or a valid grievance.

After all, how would I know if my own opinions are themselves problematic, or outright wrong, until I properly consider all alternate viewpoints?

Of course, bad ideas are bad, but you won't know it unless you listen, and can't even start to think differently unless you're being heard yourself.

This is true from whatever socio-political place you stand. Left or right, or somewhere else.

Justice League and the various titles that have similar names or seem to be the same characters is where I got very confused. I couldn't work out what things belonged together, where things started, and whether or not they required me to have read stuff before the material I've got. At a certain point I just figuratively waved my hand and hoped it would go away.

From what you describe I appear to have Justice League (1987) - all #1 - #6, then Justice League International (1987) continuing into #7 to #25 (but missing #8), and then Justice League America (1989) continuing #26 to #70, then 72-75. "Missing #0" whatever that means.

So I seem to be missing only #8 from that recommended run. Yay. Should be an easy fill. And then I can throw the rest of the confusing lot in the bin!

I had the same confusing issue with LEGION and the other titles which looked to have similar titles.

I second Colin's comment on Dark Horse Presents - a great (always reprint?) anthology comic.

I've read a few of these and so I'll do a few posts of some thoughts if no-one else does!

You might not like his politics, but Frank Miller wrote and drew some great comics. Robocop vs Terminator when I read it 30 odd years ago was frikkin' awesome and can be read standalone. The first Sin City, with Marv as the main character, was an incredible comic. The follow ups you've listed not as good IMO, but very much worth a read, and probably don't need the first one to have been read (but seek it out). Martha Washington also very enjoyable and drawn by the one and only Dave Gibbons. Give me liberty is the one to start with.

Yeah that Justice League stuff is just one lomng run with the title changing. If they have Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis of the cover its all one ruin. Most drawn by Kevin Maguire with Adam Hughes taking over after a bit. Their run ends with 60 and it becomes just standard superhero stuff again.

DeMatteis and Giffen also write the early Justice League Europe run that spins out of that series. I know less about that but figure if you like the JLI stuff you might as well check that out as well. Figure if you keep an eye on the editorial / letters pages you'll see when Justice League Europe starts in relation to the JLI run, I reckon it will be flagged pretty clearly in story too.

As for The Flash you have the complete Mike Baron run 1 - 14. Then Williams Messner-Loebs takes over 15-61 - my favourite run of this series. Mark Waid takes over and and you have most of his first stint (joined by Brian Augustyn) up to 129. I mean if you are still going at that point complete the gaps and keep going. It'll cost you bobbins to be honest.

If you want to sample just read issues 45-47. Its a Gorilla Grodd story I absolutely love. The art is pretty average but this is one of my absolute favourite long form Superhero runs (they whole 225ish issues of the 1987 series). We can talk about that more if you try and like it.

For Hellblazer you got the stuff I know. The Jamie Delano beginning of the run is very well regarded and I really enjoyed it back in the day. It spins out of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and has a similar tone. There's some fill in issues here and ther (all pretty good) after that and then with issue 41 Garth Ennis takes over for a brilliant run (as I remember it - I must get that run again) up to 83. I dropped out just before the end. Not cos it wasn't good, it was one of the last comics I got before my Wilderness Years when I was too busy having fun to afford comics.

I'd say all three of these are worth a go. If you enjoy Shade start with Hellblazer. But if you fancy something different shift to one of those two superhero titles.

I'll try to find time to look at the next chunk tomorrow. You have some great comics here though!
