General / Not-so-many-panelled pages
31 July, 2003, 06:54:47 PM
That other thread got me thinking. 2000ad really seems to have dropped its quota of panels per pages over the years. Was this intentional? I'm not even sure which I prefer, loads or a few panels per page.

General / Arkham Asylum
25 July, 2003, 07:43:47 PM
I just re-read said graphic novel. It's feckin' A1, Sharon, the second best Batman book i've read after the Dark Knight Strikes Back (only joking, I mean Returns, of course.) Genuinely scary, which is not easily done in a comic.  I also noticed a sex pistols reference in it which I never noticed before. Not sure if Morrison's standard is as high today, although I haven't read too much of his new stuff.

General / The fickle mind of the typical gimp
10 July, 2003, 01:44:16 AM
When I first saw Frazer Irving's stuff on Necronauts, I thought it was dodgy. Now he's one of my favourite 2000ad artists. Similarly, when I was a kid I thought they shouldn't get Ezquerra to draw Dredd because he couldn't do it properly, not realising he created the chap. In retrospect, I was of course very wrong.  Furthermore, I did not like spaghetti bolognaise. Now I do. The same goes for liver, and broadsheet newspapers. I mean, I could go on.

General / Chris Cunningham / Halls
09 July, 2003, 07:12:00 AM
Did anyone know that Chrises Cunningham (of weird aphex twin face fame) and Halls (of Bisley-copying for the Megazine not-so-fame) were the same person? I was very surprised recently to find that out, because I like Chris Cunningham's stuff, me.

General / Captions
29 May, 2003, 02:58:05 AM
This is a new version the message I was trying to post earlier but fecked up. It's sort of about the ABC Warriors, but is being kept WELL away from the other warrior thread (with a name like mine, things could get too personal over there).
ANYWAY... Does anyone miss the thoughtful, wordy, first- (or sometimes second-) person captions that went out of fashion in the early nineties? They were the basis of Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns and V for Vendetta, as well as a good era of Dredd, Bad Company and lots of other things. ABC Warriors is the example I'm using.
With all those thoughts in words in the Black Hole, we had a really good insight into the minds of most of the warriors. Besides Mongrol, Mek-Quake and Ro-Jaws (whose inner thoughts may not have made for good reading anyway), the captions made each warrior very individual. We even got to know what the bad guys were thinking (not just Blackblood, but that caffeine addicted woman who wanted to kill the warriors). Nowadays, it seems that everyone in the warriors has the same personalities (Mek-Quake aside, but he LOOKS like the other warriors now). I thought the same thing made Nemesis Deathbringer stand apart, although I am pretty much on my own in liking that one.
Then again, there was no excuse for (Fleischer) Rogue Trooper's dark, brooding captions: 'I lob a couple of mini-mines'.
But bring them back all the same.

General / Oh b*ggerin' sh*te.

I just typed a huge thread and forgot to post it. Feckery.

Does anyone think Garth Ennis has learned his lesson with Dredd? I actually quite enjoyed Monkey on My Back, and I even thought Helter Skelter was alright (although it I did read it before I read the Apocalypse War and the Day the Law Died, which lessened its impact a bit for me). Not quite sure about Dredd standing unmoving against a hail of aircraft fire in MOMB, but that said, a good old stomp all the same (also capturing nicely the more bastardish Dredd of the Apocalypse War / Democracy Now era). By and large , he has improved vastly on Dredd's dialogue and the overall mood of MC1.
Am I right?

Hi, Mr Logan, did you ever find that Eagle reprint of the last few episodes of the Apocalypse War? Sorry to keep going on, but you did tell me to keep pestering you about it last time I asked...
Cheers!

General / Invasion!
21 May, 2003, 01:14:56 AM
I am beginning to accept that due to an allegedly severe lack of quality, I will never get to read that Invasion story that began in prog 1. Now, I do confess to being a fan of some of the cold-war-paranoia inspired nuclear war strips of the time, and am very curious to know whether Bill Savage actually managed to beat the Volgans, and if so, how? I don't really care if anyone spoils the story. And how did they make him a 'foul-mouthed racist' in the days of serious censorship?

General / Baghdad celebrations - what do yous think?
11 April, 2003, 03:46:44 AM
Is it all propaganda, ie. a small minority of saddam-haters out breaking statues, or is it actually a saddam-hating, US-loving city? I suppose they have a reason to hate saddam, but do they really love the US after all those years of sanctions (which I know Saddam exploited to his own ends but still)?
I really don't know, me, but I'm really interested to know what people think about it.

General / To someone probably on this board
11 April, 2003, 03:07:11 AM
A few months ago, just before Christmas I think, I was in Chapters Bookshop on Abbey Street in Dublin buying cheap comics. I saw a big nu0metally punter in a long black leather coat, and the reason I bring it up is because he was wearing a 2000ad beanie, so I betchez any money he has contributed to this message board at some time or another. The way I see it, if you wear 2000ad hats, you post 2000ad messages.
Come on.
Own up.

General / Two script droids on one story
11 April, 2003, 02:50:51 AM
How does it work? As in 'Wagner / Diggle', 'Wagner / Grant', 'Morrison / Millar' and so on. DOes one come up with a basic plot and the other come up with a script? Or do the two of them sit down together and go 'right, then, in the next frame, right, Dredd goes "Drokk - creep's biting my arm!"' 'No, no, he goes "Drokk - wwe got a biter!" Then in the next frame, right..'

In retrospect, the first possibility seems more likely. Is Mr Diggle out there to advise me on my query?

General / Funny websites
10 April, 2003, 03:15:30 AM
I'm in work with little work to do and I'm bored. Anyone know any funny websites, or even just plain interesting, apart from 2000ad online? So far, I've been checking lots of breaking news, the Onion, www.theslate.ie (extracts funny Irish magazine), lots of sites about films and music, and I'm at a standstill. Imagine, more information available at my fingertips than was ever available to anyone in history, and I can't think of anything to look up.

General / Happy Birthday
09 April, 2003, 09:28:56 PM
Well, I have to spend it at work, but it's a scorching day and I'm going on a big session at the weekend and going to a Public Enemy gig to boot. Fight the Power! Anyway, I just thought I'd take the oppurtunity to tell everyone it's my birthday. Thanks.

General / A tendency towards strangeness
26 March, 2003, 10:52:04 PM
A thread mentioning Nick Abadzis just reminded me of a story in Deadline, written and drawn by Paul Zucker  (which may have been a pseudonym for Nick Abadzis, I can't remember). It was called 'a tendency towards strangeness, and was really, really good although not much actually happened in it. Anyone remember it? I've lost the issue years ago but it still sticks with me as a really enjoyable strip.

General / Pop Magic
26 March, 2003, 08:02:59 PM
Does anyone know if there is actually such a book as 'Pop Magic', as advertised by Grant 'You're gonna like it; not a lot, but you're gonna like it' Morrison on his website? Personally, I think he's making it up, but it's hard to tell. 'Chapter Three' on the website, as far as I can make out, has been 'coming soon' for about two and a half years.

Nay, if you still read this board, piss off out of it, eh, mate? Nobody wants you here.

I just realised yesterday that Mr Bones in Dredd / Aliens is the same bloke that was in the story about Judge Praeger. Nice bit of continuity there. just thought i'd share it with you all.

General / Another note to WR Logan
17 March, 2003, 02:02:28 AM
Sorry to be a pain in the swiss roll, but did that Apocalypse War thingy ever turn up when you cleared out your room? If not, no worries, I won't pester you about it again.
Cheers!
