It's those football manager simulations that get me. Don't those people understand that they can experience the real thing by going out and managing a Sunday league team, and one day, if they're extraordinarily good at it, they might be actually able to manage Chelsea? All it takes is years of effort and dedication to achieve the thing they were trying to do by mucking about on their computer on a Thursday evening?

If he was trying to choose between Doom and Half-Life, would you be advising him to buy a gun?
That's daft.  You can't shoot people for real without consequences.  YOu can, however, play guitar without being jailed and interfered with nightly by "the daddy".

My point was that the two experiences are vastly different. Much as shooty games, even the super-duper realistic ones, don't ever try to emulate the experience of running around with a gun and shooting shit up, rhythm games aren't trying to emulate the experience of playing an instrument.

House of the Dead: Overkill, for mad fantastic over-the-top sweary Grindhouse zombie-shootin' action.

Super Mario Galaxy, without a doubt the greatest platformer of this generation bar none.

Resident Evil 4, which on the Wii has an absolutely cracking control system and is well good.

I wonder if Rebellion will get around to putting out a new edition of The Batman/Judge Dredd Files with Vendetta in Gotham included (it's not in the DC version). I'd definitely buy that.

Why? It's rubbish.

I've been really enjoying this series, and in fact thought the previous series was a weak shadow of its former self. Particularly the not-so-subtle recycling of jokes from previous series.

At least this time they're recycling jokes from previous series of That Mitchell and Webb Sound instead.

Please excuse my complete ignorance here but I don't reallyplay computer games but I'm tempted to buy this as I used to love Blood Bowl. Now I have a laptop which meets all the other specs required that I can spot however I haven't the first idea about graphics cards. Now the game requires 128 Mo graphics card (supporting 2.0 shaders) and my laptop has Video Card (I'm assuming this is the same thing?) 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 so to my simple reading thats 128 to 256 so all good? But is this correct and what on earth are 2.0 shaders????

I know laptops aren't designed for games but does this seem ok?

I've no clue what 2.0 shaders are either, but they're some kind of thing that the recent generation of graphics cards can do which old ones can't. A quick nosey says that the Radeon 4570 can do such, so you ought to be ok.

All hail the Trout, and his scoop of the Century.

On the crisps/mash debate, I have a colleague who claims to put smunched-up crisps on top of pasta bakes. I had believed this kind of thing to be an isolated outbreak of mentalism until now.

16. I found an old Dredd Yearbook in the garage when I was tidying up (1993 or 4, I think - the Brit-Cit special), loved the blighter, and picked up my first Prog in Leeds station on the way home from a university open day.

I think my original point was, fun as it is there's a LOT more fun to be had buying an actual guitar and learning to play it.  There is little in life MORE fun than playing an instrument.  It just puzzles me why anyone would want to settle for a pale immitation of the REAL thing.  I'm not against fun, but having played these games, I just think how LITTLE fun they are compared to playing a real instrument with real people.

It's not trying to be the REAL thing, though. Indeed, it is the real thing, it's just not the real thing you think it is. When you play your guitar, you're actively creating music, which is nice and a thing I have much respect and admiration for. When I play GH, though, what I'm really doing is listening to a selection of classic rock tracks while enjoyably testing my hand-eye co-ordination, with a handy Pavlovian conditioning thrown in whereby I only get to listen to the music for as long as I succeed with the buttons. Presumably you wouldn't object to my listening to a CD and banging the table/humming/singing along, but GH is exactly that with the ability to tell me how in time my table-banging is.

QuoteBeing good at guitar hero has NEVER gotten anyone laid though. Promise.

Also, this is wrong.

You know, Space Raiders are 20p now? That's an increase of 300% on how much they were when even I, one of the board youth, was a nipper.

And don't get me started on Nik Naks. First they replaced the brilliant Cream 'n' Cheesy with the adequate Scampi 'n' Lemon, and now they've gone and replaced that with the crappy Pickle 'n' Onion. Bastards.
