There is a lack of diversity in terms of female representation in movies. That's just true. Now do I have to go and fight someone in a pub to make it more true?

See? Rather than thinking about what I'm actually trying to say... you immediately go on the attack. Why does it have to be an argument? Why is my take on things less important than yours - and why do you feel you have to respond with aggression?

No - you don't have to fight someone in a pub. I didn't. I just stood inbetween my friend and a drunk racist idiot who picked on him for no reason other than what he looked like.

But I'll ask you a question - if that's really how you feel about female representation... what are YOU going to do to change it? What have you DONE, what are you DOING and what are you GOING to do?

Everyone loves lists, so:

1. You first said that anyone who supports diversity is a fake, unless they can prove otherwise through some evidence of direct action. I asked if that was really necessary. That seems fair to me.

2. You said "virtue signaling" was bad, then went on to tell an expansive story in which you were the hero. Kindly: irony.

3. You say I'm aggressive but then I'd counter that you started with the name calling in your first post, and in your second you started SHOUTING at me.

4. It's okay to have a point of view without being held to account over the level of direct action you've either taken previously or plan to take in the future. It's okay to have a point of view without taking any other action than expressing it. Expressing it is an action.

5. You have no idea what level of activism or otherwise I've partaken of in my life, but you're happy to pre-judge me - which was your original point. You love to pre-judge people who support diversity. Big whoop.

1. I didn't say EVERYBODY who promotes diversity is a fake. But with anything there are fakes Do I really need to tell you this? I can tell you're not daft. You must have seen this somewhere.

2. Erm... err.... look just shut up OK?!?!?  :D J/K. OK fair play - you tore that one apart, but again it's about the point.

3. Didn't mean to call names and didn't mean to shout. Apologies if it came across that way.

4. Of course - but where is the right place to do so? Expressing something is great and all but actions speak louder than words in this life and sadly most people use the internet for expression. And that's great and all but the more it expands the more of an echo chamber it becomes.

5. Dude. Like I said, I didn't pre-judge anybody. Looking at a person's motives isn't pre-judging. It's being cautious and a stitch in time saves lives. And I didn't want to have a dig you in general I was just trying to expand on an point you raised. Too many people in this world (and I don't mean you or anyone else in particular) love to point out what the problems are - but they can't provide the answers.

I promise I'm a nice guy man. Sorry if I seemed like a dick. I just get frustrated with things sometimes because we as a species seem to like overcomplicating simple issues and behaving contrary to amicable intentions.

Listening to a bit of Bring Me The Horizon. My kid's a huge fan and I've picked up on it a bit myself.

If somebody criticises something for not having diversity I'm immediately suspicious of the person and find myself questioning WHY they are actually doing it. Do they really believe what they are saying? Or are they just trying to virtue signal themselves? It's a totally double edged sword and it really gets my spider sense tingling.

if anything I've just said is seen as controversial - I need to explain something...

I'm a Gen Xer. I was anti racist, anti sexist and anti homophobic long before "woke" and "diversity" became bywords in our popular culture. I've stood up for my beliefs in the past. I've put my money where my mouth is even risking my own safety to do so.

So when someone criticises a movie trailer or something for not having enough "diversity" in it... I feel like asking them if they ever nearly got their head kicked in for sticking up for a black friend in the roughest pub in town.

I bet I know what the answer is. It's easy to put the world to rights from behind a computer screen.

It's all good. Got dispatch confirmation earlier. Thanks.
By the way, can I change my username?

Quote from: radiator on 15 September, 2014, 04:48:12 PMThis kind of cheesy sequel-baiting is exactly the kind of thing I would not want from a sequel. It's like the ending of Godzilla '98.

Yeah, I see how you can think that BUT - it's not JUST a sequel bait, it also serves another purpose. It's also a way of showing the audience a bit of Judge Death IN CASE there ISN'T a third one, as well as setting up a story for a possible third one.

I also wouldn't approach it like Godzilla... I'd expect it to be more akin to the endings of The Empire Strikes Back, X-Men 2, Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan that kind of thing... more like X-Men 2 than any other. That perfectly set up the Dark Phoenix storyline for the third movie...

I wouldn't make it cheesy. It would be scary as fuck.

Film Discussion / How would you do "Dredd 2"?
15 September, 2014, 10:10:08 AM
OK guys. I think I've cracked the way a sequel could be done and how it could lead in a possible third one. I've already touched on some of these points in another post so if I repeat myself please forgive me.
OK - there are rumblings that a new movie would deal with the Origins story. I personally think they should stay away from that. I don't really think this movie universe needs an origin story of any kind - at least certainly not for the first sequel. No - I actually think a perfect story for the sequel would be something akin to The Day The Law Died.
Dredd is called to HQ and told that they want him to partner with Anderson again. She's experiencing terrifying hallucinations and nightmares and whenever she has one of these episodes - an unusual amount of electrical energy is detected around her. The visions and dreams she has are of a skeletal face saying "I'm cooooooming.... you are the dooooorwaaay Andersssssson". Control want Dredd to basically protect Anderson. He is told in secret that for a while now, the existence of other dimensions has been suspected and Anderson may be experiencing some kind of interference from them. Dredd protests about doing a "babysitting" job but reluctantly agrees.
They are interupted by an explosion at the Hall of Justice. Dredd and Anderson are two of the Judges first on the scene. The chief Judge is killed in the explosion and Judge Cal is made temporary acting Chief. Only he's completely insane. Many Judges have been killed or injured.
Turns out Cal was behind the explosion and was hoping Dredd would be killed in it. His plan is to take control of Mega City One and wanted Dredd out of the way to make it easier.
The story would run much like the comic book does. Cal has Dredd, Anderson and the surviving Judges declared outlaws and they must go into the streets and lead a citizen uprising to take control of the city back. They must also prevent an assassination of Hershey who is next in line to be Chief Judge.
It's a story that like the original can be pretty streamlined. The point of it would mainly be to take the action out onto the streets of Mega City One.
Hall of Justice is destroyed, Chief Judge killed. Dredd and Anderson outlawed. They must prevent an assassination on Hershey, remove Cal from power, restore Hershey to her rightful place. BOSH. There's your movie.
The thing about Anderson's nightmares and hallucinations would be a subplot. During the course of the story we see her occasionally zone out and have one of her episodes. Dredd grows increasingly concerned about her throughout the course of the events. At the end they destroy Cal and put Hershey in place and control is restored to the city. However Anderson suddenly collapses. Dredd catches her and urgently calls for medical backup. Anderson is not breathing and Dredd desperately performs CPR on her. Suddenly her eyes open, the camera zooms right into her iris where we see the face of Judge Death who laughs then screams "I AM HERE!!"
Fade to black. Film ends. Then we have the Dark Judges story set up for the third.

I've said before in here that I don't think the Dark Judges can be done in one of these movies - but I think if they set the story up as a subplot in the previous film before they do it properly, maybe audiences could accept it. It would have to be done through the Anderson character much like it is in the comics. I'm still not completely convinced... but fuck it. If I had the job of directing the sequel I reckon I'd have a crack at it.

What about you guys? If it was up to you would you take an approach like this or do things differently?

Film Discussion / Re: Dredd (2012)

I always thought The Day The Law Died would be the right direction to take the sequel in. I think it's important to take things out onto the streets of Mega City One - to actually SEE that city.

Whatever they do - Anderson should still be a main character.

I have an idea for a plot-line for a sequel. Dredd is paired up with Anderson again but not to train her or assess her - to actually protect her. She's been experiencing horrific visions and unsettling nightmares of a cackling, skeletal face which always tells her it's coming for her. Every time she has one of these visions scientists detect an unusual amount of psychic energy around her - completely off the scale. Dredd is informed of the existence of other dimensions. Scientist have known about it for a while but believe Anderson can sense other dimensional activity. Something may be trying to break through and using Anderson as a doorway. This whole thing should be a sub-plot to whatever the main focus of Dredd 2 is.
Then the sequel should end with Dredd and co winning the day but Anderson collapses. Dredd immediately rushes to her aid. The final shot should be Dredd cradling her saying "Stay with me Rookie, help is on the way". The camera then does an extreme close up on her face. Her eyes open and in her pupils we see the face of Judge Death. Fade to black. End.

Then if they ever make Dredd 3...  ;)
