 +++INCOMING MESSAGE++++++INCOMING MESSAGE+++

The Class Of '79, the award winning Judge Dredd fanzine is looking for fans of Dredd and his world to get involved in our next issue.

'79 has a number of scripts currently in production but more are needed before the next issue is released upon the world.

To that end I'm now looking for:

Writers: If you've seen the previous issues of '79 then you know what sort of material '79 prints, if not then hopefully the web site will be up and running in the next few days so you'll be able familiarise yourself with '79 soon.
If you have any ideas then please send them in for consideration.

Artists: Are you a budding artist but can't find anywhere to showcase your work, well forget the rest tryout for the best! Please no huge JPEG or GIF files as they have a tendency to clog up my in box. Small files are fine and if you want to send anything by post just ask for the snail mail address. Not got time to do a full script? '79 needs a number of pin-ups, all pin-ups in issue #3 will have a set theme so if that's what you want to submit then get in touch.

Articles: If you have any articles or ideas for articles that would fit into '79 then send in your ideas.

Web Site: Fancy a crack at taking '79's old and rather lacklustre web site and giving it a kick up the arse and dragging it into the 21st Century? If you know how the hell to do web sites then you'll be one step ahead of me, but '79 wants someone who can produce a site that will keep people coming back for more. If you have any ideas or a site you've worked on that I can take a look at then apply for the position of '79's Tek-Tutor.

'79 was set up to give fans a forum for getting involved with Dredd and his world. In recent months '79 has not been my priority and if you've sent me a letter or e-mail and received no reply then get back in touch, as we're back and getting ready to produce the best issue yet. So if you want to get involved in any way no matter how small then get in touch.

La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.

>Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. If only the strip wasn't saddled with those inherent contrivances such as Helm, Gunnar, and Bagman conveniently extending their lives as part of the weaponary they were most adept at. And did anyone else ever try rationalizing how Rogue's three companions so conveniently had the numbers one, two, and three on their bio-chips? The best I could come up with was that that was the order in which they emerged from their test tubes.

As has been posted before try looking at P J Holdens Rogue Trooper page on his website, It will enlighten you to how the names of GI's can have a profound effect upon their future.

The voting is open for the 5th National Comic Awards and you can vote online at:

http://comicfestival.co.uk

So if you have a spare few minutes take the time to send in your votes.

One category amongst the many is the one for the greatest artist ever. Not to try and influence people too much but someone who I believe should be considered for this is Mike McMahon. Is there any other artist who has ever worked on 2000 that has more of an influence than Mike, many of today's artists say that Mike was a huge influence on them and who could argue that his work is nothing short of inspirational. If you do decide to vote and are thinking of your Best artist ever choice then think about what Mike has contributed to 2000 directly and indirectly over the years.

Just recieved the Press Relesase for the upcoming 2000AD Audio series from John Ainsworth the producer of the 2000 AD series for Big Finish Productions. So as its a bit quiet today I thought I'd share the news with everyone.

La Placa Rifa,

PRESS RELEASE.

JUDGE DREDD ON CD

THE STARS OF '2000 AD' ENTER ANOTHER
DIMENSION IN ALL-NEW FULL-CAST AUDIO DRAMAS

Big Finish Productions have signed a deal with Rebellion that grants a licence to produce a series of full-cast audio dramas based on characters from the long-running 2000 AD - the galaxy's greatest comic! Naturally Judge Dredd will be the principal star of the CDs but he will be ably supported by Strontium Dog and Rogue Trooper. Each CD will feature one of the three characters in a completely new adventure enacted by a professional cast of actors. The fantastic future worlds they inhabit will be brought to life with mega-blistering movie-style sound design and enhanced by a specially composed music score.

2000 AD recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary and is undoubtedly the most influential British comic and has made substantial contributions to the SF genre and pop culture. Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion who publish 2000 AD, is delighted that, through Big Finish, the comic will now be reaching new audiences beyond the printed page: "Comics are an inherently visual and silent medium, which makes the possibilities for audio production all the more exciting.  Rebellion is thrilled to be bringing the worlds and characters from 2000 AD into a different medium".

Big Finish Productions may be a new name to comics enthusiasts but they are no strangers to audio. Since 1999 they have been producing monthly CD audio dramas based on Doctor Who. The series, produced under licence from the BBC and featuring the original stars of the show, has been highly successful. Big Finish also release CD dramas based on The Tomorrow People and James Follett's Earthsearch. Big Finish have a wealth of talent and experience that they will be bringing to the worlds of 2000 AD. Jason Haigh-Ellery, Big Finish CEO, is particularly excited about this project as he holds a personal fondness for 2000AD: ""I've been reading 2000AD since issue one, and still buy it 25 years later. What's kept my interest has been the fantastic worlds that have been created for 2000AD's characters - and now we have the chance to live in those worlds and fight along with our heros!".

The first 2000AD CD adventure will be released on 2nd April and will be fully promoted by a free CD cover-mounted on the Judge Dredd Megazine, published on 3rd April. This first adventure will of course star Judge Dredd and is entitled Wanted: Dredd or Alive and has been written by long-time Judge Dredd author and editor, David Bishop. Further CDs will be released every month from thereon continuing with Judge Dredd - Death Trap in May and Strontium Dog - Down to Earth in June.

People wanted news so here's some for you,

La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.

OK, what have we got coming up... Prog 1280 is the 25th Anniversary prog, with a 12-page Dredd story by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra called 'Leaving Rowdy', in which Dredd hands over his apartment in Rowdy Yates Block to Rico. Also in the prog is a 10-page Tharg story set at the Ministry of Sound birthday bash, with each page done by a different writer and artist - expect to see Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell, Garth Ennis and Dave Gibbons, Pat Mills and Kevin O'Neill, Alan Grant and John Higgins, plus many more. Then there's the start of Nikolai Dante: The Romanov Job by Robbie Morrison and Simon Fraser.

After 1280 we have such Thrills as the return of Dredd obsessive Bella Bagley in 'Love Story III: The End of the Affair' by John Wagner and Ian Gibson, new story Atavar by Dan Abnett and Richard Elson, more Sinister Dexter (knew that would please you :-)), the start of major Dredd series 'Sin City' in Prog 1289 by John Wagner and Kev Walker, the premiere of psychic epic '13' by Mike Carey and Andy Clarke, Judge Death gets his seriously scary own series, courtesy of John Wagner and Frazer Irving, and the return of Tor Cyan by John Tomlinson and Jock.

That takes us up to Summer, which I'll leave you with just one word: 'Retro'...

Best,
Matt.

As promised.

Scojo's mad question:

>Ever since Mr Flint drew ABC Warriors last year and now Shakara, I've
>wondered if in fact his art is in colour and then printed in black and white.

>All of the backgrounds look like they use a mixture of computer colour.

>Does anyone have any ideas? Maybe someone at Rebellion can tell me?

Henry's more than sane answer:

ABC Warriors and Shakara were both done in the same way, The black and white line work was scanned in then filled in Greytone on the computer using the same methods as you would colour. After finishing the greytone I then Reset the page to colour and finish off by placing in the Red. I work the same way
as all the other colour artists but with the colour switched off, one thing less to worry about

More Scojo madness:
>If it is originally in colour, I hope he gets paid the same amount as
>colour art jobs! Would seem a shame to draw it in colour and then be
>printed in black and white.

Henry's answer:
I don't get paid the colour rate, but I have had a chat with Tharg for what I think is a fair price per page. I draw in B&W and it gets printed in B&W.

Moan, Moan, Moan, is that all this message board is good for, I don't like this, and so and so is crap. Jesus H Christ is there nothing else to talk about or are we just going to see the usual vocal minority slagging off the same thing, post after post, week after week? If you don't like something you have a right to say so, after all its your ?1.40 you've just spent but can we at least give reasons why, and see if a thread or discussion can come out of it.
The story you hate, may be really popular with loads of others or the story you hate could be equally reviled by loads of people, but the same people keep knocking the same stories and spouting off the same crap, at least lets have different reasons and arguments for it.
Personally I can't stand Sinister/Dexter, never have and never will, to me it?s the biggest pile of arse ever printed, but apparently it's one of 2000's most favourite strips, go figure. Somebody out there likes it but it sure as hell ain't me, and to spout off my dislike for Dowlodes duo week after week would soon become boring as hell. For every story you like there will be someone who dislikes it, fact of life. If you dislike something then try and make some point so that this message board can turn into a place of discussion, instead of somewhere where short posts appear and not many great threads are generated or a place for Scojo to talk about, movie scripts and his cat.

Remember after all its only a bloody comic.

Now that it has been announced that Rebellion has signed a deal to do two Dredd movies you can guarantee that for the next two years we?ll be seeing many a rumour reference what is happening concerning the production of the said films.

Here is what Rob Worley had to say in Comics2Film #195:

JUDGE DREDD

A few months back Comics2Film told fans to expect 2000AD?s Judge Dredd to make a cinematic comeback. Today's Variety reports that a deal is in place for the futuristic lawman's return.

Shoreline Entertainment has entered into an agreement with Rebellion to produce two movies based on the popular U.K. character. Shoreline's Morris Ruskin and Vicki Pike will produce with Rebellion's Jason Kingsley and Andy Predergast.

The two films will be shot back-to-back. First up in the deal is Judge Dredd: Dredd Reckoning. According to the write up, that picture has Dredd "losing confidence in the corrupt legal system." The follow up movie will be called Judge Dredd:  Possession and sports Judge Death as the villain who possesses Dredd?s partner.

The movies will not be sequels to the reviled Sylvester Stallone flick of the mid-1990's. "We are reinventing the franchise by taking it back to the edge and style of the original comic book,"  Ruskin told Variety.

Pike talked about the character's potential as a franchise stating, "There are thousands of Judge Dredd stories, so there is endless material available to work with. It will also be easier to brand the movies by presenting them back-to-back."
