Megazine / Meg 409 - The Death of Dominion?
15 June, 2019, 04:29:38 PM
Got the post today - only read finale of the Torture Garden before i go myself to the garden centre. (See what I did there?). Stunning wraparound cover by Percival. His covers and art on this series has been spectacular each month and this is a great end to the series. A very thoughtful end too. Love this take on the bad boys of Dredd's universe and think they work much better removed from the world of Dredd . Can't wait to see where these two creators, Percival and Hine (hopefully!) take them next. Right! time to buy some top soil and then onto Lawless. To be continued.... ;)

Megazine / Meg 407 - Storm Rider!
12 April, 2019, 12:17:14 PM
Got my copy of the Meg today which was a pleasant surprise. Will do a full run down soon (Lawless, great, The Torture Garden, my top story in the issue) but the main thing I wanted to mention was the new bag that the Meg comes sealed in, which started with the last issue. The fact that it's now semi-opaque means you can't really see the cover very well and I'm sure this isn't really going to make it stand out on the newstand or help sales. Being shrinkwrapped every issue (I know it's to keep the floppy in there!) , I always thought must hurt sales, since you can't have a look through it to see if you want to buy it. Don't think this new bag will help. Probably cheaper to produce but not great for the covers. Thoughts?

Megazine / Megazine 401 - Grave New World!
13 October, 2018, 09:50:11 PM
Halloween comes early with a totally terrific/horrific Dark Judges wraparound cover by Nick Percival. This a great, spooky image, showcasing a spiffy new look for Death & his pals that fits in with the new storyline. It's good to see them constantly evolving - kind of like a Doctor Who regeneration after they were nearly destroyed last issue. (the free print looks great as well!)

Starting off we get a one-off Dredd by McConville and Clint Langley -  a decent enough tale but I'm really waiting for a new Dredd epic to begin and I'm not 100% convinced Langley's art works that well on Dredd. He's great on ABC Warriors but this strip looks a wee bit weird for the lawman.

Lawless is solid and reliable as always with one hell of a battle scene in there this month. A classic case I'm sure of Abnett writing a one line description and then over to the artist to nearly kill himself drawing it! Would like to sometimes see a bit more black, shadow areas though as sometimes it's a bit overwhelming to make certain things out but does keep you looking, Where's Wally style!

Storm Warning has some nice spooky ghost stuff and I really like Broxton's European style of art, that'll he'll have to stop after Brexit, of course. He does some nice colouring as well.

Articles on the new Scream/Misty special & Sniper Elite comic are perfectly fine as is the one on the new Worlds of 2000AD tabletop games. I might actually take the plunge on these.

Blunt is nice and cheerful in style but really doesn't do much for me. I'm sure it has its fans.

And finally, The Torture Garden. I love how this is developing with Hine and Percival on board. It really feels like something different with the new Dark Judges, like it's all building up to something monstrous and epic. Superb atmosphere in the art - that double page spread is sublime - and now we're also introduced (Aliens style, it has to be said!) to a strange group of super-marines tasked with travelling to Dominion to take on the judges, while Rosco seems to have gone native living in tunnels and eating weird creatures. I'm so glad this is a longer series than before.

So after issue 400, the Meg is still blazing away putting most other comics to shame and the price is back to £5.99 as well. All good!

Megazine / Meg 389 - Darklands
16 October, 2017, 09:42:38 PM
Starting the thread for 3 issues in a row?! Does nobody get the Meg in the post anymore? It's not like I've been providing Tharg special favours or anything ;)
Anyway, got mine today and will post a bigger review later, since I've only read Dredd and Dominion yet.
Suitably spooky and stunning wraparound windscreen style cover art from Nick Percival of the Dark Judges and their gang of gnarly zombies. Great image choice for upcoming Halloween. Would make a nice and gruesome movie poster.
Dredd was a nice one off with another self help group about frozen patients from a cryogenics chamber with a nice twsit. Similar set up but follows a different path to last month's Dredd. Not familiar with Paul Davidson's art but it's quite nice in a cartoony, wonky sort of way.
Went straight to Dominion, which continues to impress with its movie style storytelling and truly menacing, lavish art. Said this before, but this would be a great Dark Judges style film and I really feel we're in for a grim ending for all these colonists.
Nice feature on the new Misty/Scream special which I'll be picking up later this week.
Off to have some hot Weetabix on this dark and stormy night and tuck myself in to read the rest (Lawless  -yes!)

Megazine / Meg 388 - This Means Waugh!
16 September, 2017, 08:07:13 PM
Wow! Managed to start the Meg thread for a second week in a row. Is no-one else getting their copies? We do have a new postie so maybe Tharg has employed him.
Nice fine and dandy Devlin Waugh cover
Anyway, another strong Megazine this month with a nice one off Dredd that focuses on the relatives of his 'victims' in a support group which was a neat idea. Some very Cam Kennedy style art from Nick Dyer that fits in with the story pretty well.
Anderson chugs along nicely and loved the Lego people robots! My bank is the same ( you'll know what I mean when you read it)
The return of Devlin Waugh felt a little bit flat for me but I know it's only the first episode. Is this the first time John Smith hasn't written Devlin? I always liked his first story with the prison and vampires. It could end up being good , so will wait and see. Artwork certainly captured Sean Philips Devlin's likeness.
Good Frank Miller career spotlight even if I know pretty much everything it focused on. The other text article is a book review about Comics Storytelling which will be good for the kiddies!
Dredd Furies conclusion has a naughty swear word in it but is a pretty action packed end to the tale. Nuff said.
Standout strip for me again is Wagner & Percival's Dark Judges Dominion. This, to me is what a Dark Judges film could be without any Dredd related stuff. Nice, moody, gruesome and has a tense claustrophobic feel to it. Love how some pages just let the amazing art tell the story and build the suspense. Really reminds me of The Thing meets Aliens meets Walking Dead. That last page is a belter!
Lawless returns next month as well. Yay!
The floppy a 'Whatever happened to..?' compilation with Tweak, Giant, Maria, The Griblings, etc, etc
So now you know!  :)

Megazine / Meg 387 - Skyhigh!
11 August, 2017, 07:09:50 PM
My Megazine arrived today which is very weird but very welcome as I just got back from work and had a quick flick through, just at the Dredd story, the Liam Sharp interview and the second part of Dominion. Will read properly after a late tea but looks like another great issue but a special shout out for Percival's art in Dominion, particularly the sequences of Judge Death sleeping and Mortis on the attack are simply stunning! Will be back after dessert!
