Website and Forum / shop problems
07 January, 2012, 03:36:39 PM
have 40 quids worth of stuff lined up to buy from the sale but when I try and log-in to the shop it says:

'no match for this email / and or password'

despite the fact that I'd clicked on the link in the email sent to my email address saying 'click here to activate' AND then got to a page saying 'ACCOUNT ACTIVATED' however when going back the the cart to checkout I then get the 'please login' and on doing so get the above error message.

I'm 99% sure its not a data input problem from my side

Books & Comics / Steve Bissette vs Marvel - the pledge
30 December, 2011, 04:47:06 PM
I was listening to a debate between Steve Bissette & a Law Professor over the recent Kirby case (holding Kirby was a freelancer under a 'work for hire' contract so has no IP rights in 'his' (debate over his role vs Stan Lee) creations.

At the end of the debate Bissette stated that he doubted that attempts to find a pre-trial solution were in any way fair to the Kirby family and that a consumer boycott of Marvel's Jack Kirby work (be it reprints or the continuation of the characters in new comics /movie / merchandise) was the only way likely to bring a favourable solution that rewards the Kirby estate.  In his own words 'I'm done'. He notes that in the 90's a consumer boycott of Marvel ended their craze of multiple-variant covers and gold-foil bagging.

Seeing as some of you are debating starting the Ultimate Marvel Graphic Novel series does Bissette's idea hold any sway?

Maybe more controversially would you respond to such a call if it was made in relation to 2000AD's disputed IP. Tharg clearly avoids controversy with the contested titles (Alan Moore's work, Zenith, Luke Kirby) but with Watchmen 2 likely to poke Alan Moore into angry bear mode what would your response be to a similar call over the Halo Jones GN?

The full deabate can be heard here:

A small blog about one of the more neglected 2000AD institutions. Updated daily (or 7-times-a-week) 'ish.

Other Reviews / The Comics Journal - Metalzoic
13 July, 2011, 02:57:27 PM
One of the most regular thumbs up for 2000ad work  is TCJ.com's Joe Mcchuloch's weekly 'This Week In Comics' - a format of a loose essay about a new release and then several lines on 'other good things listed for this week'. Recently he's promoted Slaine, ABC Warriors, The Bendatti Vendetta, and the Free Comic Book Day prog    as well as related works such as Battlefields Vol II, Jose Ortiz, Bulletproof Coffin and Elephant Man. However this he's gone to town on a Transformers / METALzoic riff with lots of lovingly reproduced (colour) pages. If Tharg doesn't have this guy on his promo lists he should as there is alot of love being given to his product.

Mike McMahon
Glenn Fabry
Dave Taylor
Rufus Dayglo
Will Simpson
PJ Holden (who he?)
Gary Erskine
D'Israeli
Gary 'the guvnor' Leech
Mike Collins
Rob Granito

WHATS NOT TO LOVE??

Oh yeah.. and that Wayne Simmons bloke will be there. And hopefully them dastards from Sunnyside Comics.

Things to remember - 2d is NOT like any other comic festival...
1) the panels are in the evening, upstairs, in a bar, drunk.
2) the artists RARELY charge for a sketch (and when they do its buttons)
3) there is NEVER a queue to chat - you get AGES to speak to the guests. Its amazing.
4) its a community art thing - there are tons of wee kids, parents, fun. Its un-nerdy (aside from the 2000ad fans... admit it guys we stink the place out).
5) Derry is a BEAUTIFUL ancient city, Dog cheap to get to / stay in. You'd be mad not to make a weekend out of it.
6) I'll do lifts from Belfast Airports (international (aka Aldergrove) or City) to Derry for anyone from here for petrol money only.

Books & Comics / The Future Shock that got away
24 November, 2010, 01:57:45 AM
The current Heavy Metal (Fall 2010 'Fright Special') has a rather nice 5 page 'story with a twist' by sometime 2000AD creator Adrian Bamforth. Given the quality of the writing and art i'd guess the reason for its non-appearance in 2000ad must be something like it was too similar to a previous Shock. Nice digs at Vector13 / the Men-in-Black. Kudos to Adrian if he's around these-parts.

Given it appears alongside the latest Pat Mill's Vampire Knight (Claudia bk iii) and a really beautifully drawn full length mystery/pirate GN the whole package is as strong a Heavy Metal as there has been in a while and definitely VERY 2000AD in feel.

General / McMahon "swipes"

somewhere out there there is a very good 'swipe files' showing Ian Kennedy using tracing paper on a McMahon Dredd. So at least he had taste.

General / Radio5 / Up All Night
19 April, 2010, 02:40:38 AM
each week the BBC Radio5 program 'up all night' adds one book to its 'virtual bookshelf' - the format is people call in, nominate a single volume (be it the Collected Works of Shakespeare or a novella) and it must be printed version. No non-existant 'best of' etc. People then text or call in in support and the total votes at the end of that night gets the book on. After 10 weeks there is then the inverse in that the discussion is which of the last ten books to take off. Very often an obscure book can get on and stay on when it has someone giving it passionate support - eg 'brewers dictionary of phrase and fable.

Thereafter the books are read in a bookclub fashion and - importantly - the list is constantly repeated each week several times.

Now... strikes me we need to get something 2000AD on there...weekly publicity, on a BBC list and eventualy read and discussed on air..

I would suggest we discuss a candidate here (be it Prog 1, Casefiles 4, America, Dante, Halo Jones..) then all get behind voting for it in the early hours of one sunday.... any takers?
