There's a really favourable review of the Dredd Rebellion trades here, they also link back into the shop section of this very site...

It's the sort of recommendation Judge Dredd needs - forget the movie, read the books, they're amazing.

I think it's true that the movie has done a lot of damage.

Having read a bit about the movie though, my sympathies lie with Cannon.  From what I've heard, there were forces, incoherant mumbling forces, really stacked against him.

Bico

I've thought Danny Cannon got a raw deal from the off.  The Dredd script was written by the guy who wrote (and directed) Street Fighter: The Movie.
You can't polish a turd.

twas Danny Cannons pitch that led to that script though -his "Benn Hurr" angle of Dredd as Roman Empire Epic that pushed the story in the direction it ended?

Aintitcool.com has given a few glowing reviews to 2000ad trades recently. I recall one particular geek-gasm about Rogue Trooper

Being pedantic, for a moment. It was actually William Wisher (of Terminator fame) who wrote the Dredd script. Steve De Sousa was brought in to inject excruciatingly poor and ill judged humour to it.

I'll just stick in the http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=23480" target="_blank">article link for anyone who's not into the whole copy & paste scene, like, man.

Great review - and hits the nail right on the head - you can be as forgiving as you like, but it'll never change the fact that the Dredd movie is not only crap as it stands, but an absolute PR disaster for the character.

This seems to happen a lot when movieland gets it's grubby paws on something it doesn't understand - like LOEG, for example.

"Whatever it is all those readers liked about this, Bob, let's fuckin' change it!"

Though in Logan's interview with Wagner, the big man sez he told Cannon what he thought of the pish-poor storyline but Cannon 'didn't want to know'.

That's really really good news! I knew that, once free of the DC deal, when Rebellion began pushing classic Wagner Dredd instead of Rubbish Ennis Dredd, it would serve them better in the long term. This is just the sort of positive publicity Rebellion need (especially on such a popular site like aintitcool), and I hope this sort of thing will generate good sales in the US. I think they'll generate good word of mouth too. I want to buy that reviewer a pint!

I emailed the reviewer and he says he'll likely be reviewing the Case Files before long. To quote one portion: "This is my first experience with Dredd and many of 2000AD's other trades. It really is some great stuff."

Here's hoping his writing convinces more people in the US to pick up the books.

We need to find and destroy every existing copy & print of said "Judge Dredd" film. Let's rewrite history.

Nah, just wait another 5 or 10 years or so, then do another film from scratch that totally ignores the original. (And is good, of course!)

Worked for Batman!

JOE SOAP

Yeah but at least the early Batman films were generally successful and made loads of money. Dredd was a complete and very expensive flop.

It would be hard to make the money men -who see it as dodgy property- forget about it.
