Quoteit's at least possible that the original Dillon linework still exists in B&W.
That's got me wondering about Zenith IV now... (Although I vaguely recall Yeowell saying that one was designed to be coloured from his part, so perhaps it wouldn't work anyway if the B+W ever existed and still exists.)

Interesting, and if it's obtainable, very cool.

The first episode of Zenith IV was overwhelmed by some heavy fully painted and murky colouring. It was pretty dire to be honest. But I liked the colouring in the following episodes. Much flatter, almost pastel tones, much more sympathetic to the drawing. So I'd only decolourise the first one myself, if such a thing were possible. I don't know if there's a story as to why the colouring changed so drastically after episode 1, but I'm glad it did.

Isn't the first episode of Zenith book 4 set entirely in the grim Lloigor-run future? That might explain why it looks so grim compared to the rest of the run

Where do you keep them?

My finger has hovered over the buy button for the McMahon book and the Steve Dillon edition looks beautiful, but jee-zus they are big. I don't have a shelf nearly tall enough to store anything like that and all potential 'coffee table' real estate is taken up by the other half's books on CoCo Chanel, YSL and the like.

I have a weird tall built in cupboard in my studio that is both the housing for the combo boiler and hides the stairwell (so the bottom of it is raised to about knee height) inside that is a wooden unit that I ransacked from a table or something that I use to hold about 16-17 a3 blocks of paper. The cupboard is to the ceiling so very tall and also now houses a bunch of apex/artists edition. And there's room for a few more.

pauljholden

Not to make anyone jealous, but I find the best way to read these things is to take one out of the cupboard, put it on a large table and pour over it pge by page with John McCrea.

How do you read yours?

Sure, the colourist was following a brief to make the future episodes dark. The painting method between the two sets of episodes is so different though. Darker (grimmer) colours could have been employed on the first episode in the same flat and sympathetic-to-the-line-work way as the following ones. I'd go and get the book to check I'm not making this up but the cat's on me.

With the omission of Dillon's two best series (™ personal opinion), I wouldn't be tempted meself.

Regarding Emerald Isle; Mark Simpson coloured it as far as I recall, but there are definitely uncoloured pages available out there. Have seen 'em before.

OP answer: Has to be Bryan Talbot for me.

To be fair, Rebellion didn't give an exact run down of the contents of the other Apex editions and it is still 8 months to go. The six page sampler they have put up so far does include a splash page from Cry of the Werewolf. I guess that is only available in the slip-case version as a flyleaf poster page. Will have to hope they put up some more info as I would also be disappointed if more from those two stories aren't included.

Unfortunately, Rebellion is entirely dependent not only on what original art can be tracked down, but also in whose hands the originals are. Some collectors have been known to make absolutely ludicrous financial demands to supply high res scans of their pages. (Don't get me wrong, providing a scan of sufficient quality to use in one of these books is a non-trivial task, but sometimes it can stray into "How badly do you want this page in your book?" territory.)

Yeah, I think I get how the collector's world works. It can attract some peculiarly selfish types. I remember reading about missing Doctor Who episode collectors. Allegedly, there are still some episodes out there in the hands of collectors that the BBC don't have. The owners won't let the Beeb take copies and they won't let anyone else see it either. Not even at special BFI screenings. If the owners start asking mega-bucks then it's never going to happen.

The cupboard...

Apologies for how awkward these photos look, it's awkward to get in (my wife thought it'd be a good idea for the cupboard to hold some of my shirts, but there's more there than I reckoned with).
I genuinely can't remember all the artists editons I have.
John Paul Leon's Winer Men.
Brian Bolland Dredd
America's Best Comics (featuring a mix of stuff, but notably a lot of the Kevin Nowlan strips)
(not sure what's in the white one between those two, I cleverly started putting labels on them, then stupidly got my hand in the way of the photo - oh wait, it's the Mick McMahon Dredd)
Batman Dark Knight Returns
Watchmen
Zenith Apex
and I think, out of shot is the Chris Samnee Daredevil AND a Mike Mignola Hellboy shorts one.
I might have another, but I think that's it.

My wife and I think we've ordered the next McMahon one, but won't know until it turns up (this is the problem with these advance orders, it's not the first time I've accidentally bought a book twice because I ordered it so far in advance...)

Anyway that's my lot. A weirdly tall cupboard (with space for, I reckon, if I can find somewhere else to dump the shirts, about six more books, height is no object!)

This is playing out in an ultra weird way with the son of the writer of the first couple of epsiodes withholding permission from the beeb from putting those episodes on iplayer...

(but I digress)

God! What is it with the BBC giving family members veto rights over ancient broadcasts? There is no legal or contractual basis for this. They did the same with their Top of the Pops re-runs! They are scared of their own shadow.
