Hi guys. I was reminiscing about a comic I read when I was kid and I'd love to read it again, I was wondering if you could help. I'll try to describe it.

I think it was a one-off set in the Judge Dredd universe, but I could be wrong. I seem to remember it looking like megacity one in my minds eye. Judge Dredd himself was hardly in it, if at all. It was about a restaurant serving up some mutagen or something  (unbeknownst to the diners) that turned all the patrons into body-horror nightmares. I remember it made me feel queasy but I loved it!

Who here has subcribed to get the exclusive art prints (me  :D )

me too!

Although disaster struck, got issue 2 and 3 today and theres a bit of damage. issue 2 has a crushed corner and issue 3 has quite deep scratches in the cover. the badge was in there too, and the pin on it is bent out of shape so im guessing that it was pressing into the cover of issue 3

they could definitely use a bit of bubble wrap for these, all things considered

I just looked into it some more and the range of compatible wacom pens is much more limited than i made it sound, sorry about that! Good catch Jon. Some of the Bamboo range works, research would be needed

ive definitely read that there is cross-compatibility, the bamboo feel for example seems to work with the 12.2 Note Pro. but yeah you will want to make sure a particular wacom stylus works with your particular Note tablet if you have one in mind

as far as i know, all wacom digitizers detect pressure. there may be tiers of pressure-sensitivity, im not sure. Definitely read reviews before you buy a model, ones that go into detail on the drawing/writing side of things.

you can pick up a 12.2 inch, 2560 x 1600 resolution Note Pro for <£400. still a lot of money, but if youre in the market for a general tablet anyway say, i think thats a very attractive proposition indeed. i love that resolution - something thats always stuck in my craw about those super expensive 20+ inch cintiqs is that theyre only 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200, id like much more resolution myself.

also, I think that if a tablet has a proper wacom digitizer, any proper wacom pen works with it too. so youve got a choice of professional grade styluses there if you dont like the bundled stylus.

I couldnt see how to edit my post, so sorry for double posting - I think its actually the Note series of samsung galaxy tablets that have the wacom digitizer

Ive often wondered how a samsung galaxy tab would fare as a cheap graphics tablet, their s-pen is meant to be great and the digitizer layer on the screen of some of the tab models is made by wacom. there are a lot of models and the naming convention gets confusing though!

The ONLY good book I've ever read about drawing from life (and I've read a lot) is Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

I think ill pick that up, thanks. theres a workbook to go with it too, could become a little project for me.

@DarkJimbo yeah colour is so much more than meets the eye isnt it. I havent really learnt any proper colour theory. Though there is this idea of colouring that within pixel art is called hue-shifting, which is an easy method of getting eye-catching colours without being an expert.

It just means that as a gradient of colours for a material, say skin, goes from dark to light, you change the hue. you can do it with the lightsource in mind, inject some yellow into the highlights if the sun is out, and then put some cooler colours into the shadowed areas like blue. or you could do something more outlandish. really basic stuff but when i started using hueshifting i noticed a huge improvement in my colouring. Can anyone recommend some colour theory learning materials?

@CFM haha, thats a great story!! I must say, its a sorry state of affairs that  i dont think ive met many people who felt encouraged by their teachers at school!!!

wow loads of great advice, and some cool links thanks dudes!! I can definitely see how life drawing, learning to draw a real object from our stereoscopic view, can help so much with volume and depth. Plus when you start to draw real figures you definitely start to notice how almost every element of the skeleton changes position with the slightest of difference in pose, and i suppose if you master that you can produce some really special work. Hips/pelvis are an odd body part for me, i find it easy to forget that theres a lot of movement there, theyre constantly tilting and such.

I used to go to the gym a lot, so through that ive got a laymans knowledge of muscles, names, when they contract and relax. Id say that is pretty good advice actually, to go to the gym if you want to get fit and learn some anatomy in the process!!

Does anyone have any more info on their process when they life draw? Ive seen a few techniques, from creating light silhouettes first with charcoal to find the form and build upon, to drawing from negative space, is one technique better than another for learning form and depth etc?
