Any story in which an accountant is the ultimate hero really doesn't feel like it sits well in the 2000AD as Uncle Pat oringially concieved it....

It's almost like 1977 2000AD was planned out by somebody who trained to be an accountant but then didn't follow that career path ;-)

But arguably the most interesting element of the strip just happened and now it’s done. It could be an intergalactic Lone Wolf and Cub (and with the doubly rare combination of a father/daughter relationship and non-white leads), if it wasn’t so mired in cliché.

Funny that you should mention Lone Wolf & Cub, considering the next prog's Future-Shock.

Anyway, two strips to go... one's a ostensibly light-hearted story about a woman heading into the unknown after a radical change of identity, and the other - yeah you get the drift. The difference is that one's a triumphant piece of work that'll hopefully grace the prog for some time to come while the other looks hopelessly out of place in the current line-up.

Does The Out feature a change of identity?

Oof - I see there's a 15p price rise next prog. They like to sneak those in after a jumping-on prog, don't they.

I did notice that...

Two-Faced Terror was the first appearance of a gronk, wasn't it?  Not to mention the Smiling Chukwalla.

Not a Gronk, but the Gronk. Also the first time that Alpha goes up against one of his own kind.

Was it?  I couldn't remember if it was The Gronk we know and love, or the short-lived brother of that gronk...

Although this does mean we missed out on Disco Fiends. Tsk.

I mean, we're often getting Fiends stories from different time periods in the Hallowe'en specials.  All you have to do is wish hard enough...

Re: best Jim Carrey film.  The answer is obviously Earth Girls are Easy.  Which admittedly I haven't seen for a quarter of a century and probably isn't that good.

Brassed Off

"...I thought it mattered. I thought that music mattered. But does it bollocks! Not compared to how people matter."

So that's where that quote comes from!  I only know it from the Chumbawamba song.

I think it’s referencing Yellow Submarine more.

Oh yes - that makes sense.  Thinking about it, while I saw a lot of Jamie and the Magic Torch when I was a kid (and a little as an adult) I'm not entirely sure I've ever watched Yellow Submarine, other than little clips in other media...

Great work from D'Israeli in clueing us in that it was a dream sequence even before appearances from dead people and psychedelic touches.  Does the reference to watching too much TV show in the double-page spread?  Some of it looks a little Jamie and the Magic Torch.

Good to see Maitland back though I did find myself thinking during the collecting villains phase that they'd just get in each others way.  Sure it'll be entertaining, but I was at least expecting them to be working independently.  They just look like one big target in the last panel...

Oh yes, and I kind of missed out part of the explanation - side-effect of sporadic batches means that the weekly threads mount up and get a bit difficult to catch up on, whereas story-specific threads are easier to pick-and-choose if you really want to discern deeper meaning about a story weeks after it was first published (or have a rant about how good/bad it is).
