Off Topic / chatting online
« on: 19 May, 2021, 12:44:12 PM »
Looks like a lot of people need to talk, so how about we do so online?  I've virtually attended the Lawless convention and numerous Southern Contingent meetings over the past year, as well as a regular gaming channel (voice channel while we play boardgames online).

At this stage I'm thinking of just setting a date, time and location and seeing who - if anybody - turns up.

I'll lay out the options below and am thinking of possibly doing this later this week (I'm guessing weekends would probably be most convenient but this particular weekend is already going to be logistically challenging for me).

Events / Lawless convention 2021

Just realised I've seen no mention of this on forum this year.

The Lawless convention is on - right now!  Being virtual this time around it's called Lawless: The Bunker.

Off Topic / challenge yourself!
« on: 01 April, 2021, 01:24:25 PM »
As Buttonman's thread will go on haitus until munros open and their other goals get more attainable, I thought I'd start a more general thread for the rest of us to challenge yourself (as everybody knows, if challenges and resolutions are made public then you're more likely to attain them - wether through guilt, shame or support from the people they're been shared with).

I'm mostly copying and pasting what I put in that thread...

Lose Weight / Get Exercise: I think a good proportion of the readers of 2000AD nowadays have that challenge - the demographics mainly being people in middle age or fast approaching. The NHS tells me this:
Healthy weight range for your height: 10st 4lb - 13st 13lb
Your health would really benefit from gradually losing just 5% of your current weight. The best way to lose weight is through a combination of diet and exercise.  Aim to lose 11lbsRecommended daily calorie intake: 2051 - 2637 kcal.
To lose 1-2lbs a week stick to the lower end of the range.
First challenge I have for this is that neither of the electronic scales in the house currently work, so I'll focus on getting some sort of exercise every day.

Update Blogs regularly : as luck would have it I also have a blog that I need to keep updating regularly.prog slog hack and prog slog hack forum thread
I've had runs where I managed to update pretty every day, for almost six months but this can get challenging at times, either through not having time to write or from encountering publications which take longer to read then the average weekly prog.

Get a Letter Printed: I've not had anything published yet (I think I've sent in a total of about 10 letters and/or emails over the past 35 years) so if I send a letter a week perhaps the constant drip, drip, drip will force Tharg to print one just to shut me up?
This was somewhat harmed by lockdowns and not being able to get the weekly prog in the same week that they come out (I support my friendly local comic shop, so have been having them delivered once a few months worth of progs and megs stack up).

Draw or write something at least once a week: doing a blog commenting on other people's creativity makes me want to spend some time creating things of my own.  Especially when I see the clumsy world-building and art from some early appearances - they might be world-class creators now, but they leant by doing - and in the case of some people all the learning was on public display (I won't mention names, other than what I've already done in my blog).
Not been doing too well at this, but as April is Camp NaNoWriMo month I hope that acts as a kick-start.

Read all the unread comics and graphic novels I've got lying around:  Getting my excuses in early, I've moved house a few times in the last couple of decades and so some issues have got misplaced with all the moves.  I'd hate to read the next issue without having read the preceding one.  It's only this year two years ago that I've managed to get all my reading material in one place and been able to start organising it.  Along with runs which are partially read I have three boxes of comics to read through...  I've made a start with Sandman: Overture, which had had a few issues in one place, one somewhere else and the rest in a third place since it was completed... er... four years ago!
As I mentioned over on the other thread, I managed to read Overture (I even partially compiled a playlist of what the artist said they were listening to while drawing it - available on Spotify.

The passing of Si has been mentioned on the RIP thread, but I suspect some people don't keep an eye on that, so posting here as well.

Film & TV / New Star Wars
« on: 11 December, 2020, 09:55:40 AM »
From the looks of it, Disney's main focus, Star Wars-wise, is on streaming series rather than films for the foreseeable future.

Star Wars - The Mandalorian (has its own long-running thread so no need to discuss it here).

The Bad Batch - looks like a follow-up to The Clone Wars, set at the beginning of the Empire.

Lando - self-explanatory.

A Droid Story - but which droid?  I'll have a look for the sizzle reel during my lunch hour, unless someone else finds it first.

Rogue Squadron - no doubt based on characters from the game.

Ahsoka - self-explanatory.

Rangers of the New Republic - ?

The Acolyte - ?

Obi-Wan Kenobi - self-explanatory - was originally going to be a Star Wars Story film but I think it's a series now.

Andor - the special forces guy from Rogue One.

Visions - ?

General / Festive Thrill-Tree: GN Blurb Translated Too Many Times
« on: 01 December, 2020, 10:06:59 AM »
This is my sort-of-quiz, as mentioned in some thread or other (I thought it was the no advent calendar this year thread, but apparently not).

Inspired by a YouTube channel*, I've taken the blurb for various 2000AD collected editions (from the 2000AD webshop) and used Google Translate multiple times, then translated back in to English.  I've had to do some jiggling about to take away names that would be an immediate give-away (sometimes Translate will turn names in to a word, then that word gets translated through other languages, sometimes not).

Not exactly sure how this will work - I expect I'll post the translation here, update the Forum Tree Present thread then allow a day or two for forumites to guess which collection it originally came from.  If nobody gets it within a day I'll probably post the answer, maybe an additional day on weekdays (sorry, shift workers).

No doubt I'll get mixed up somewhere along the way and post the answer along with the blurb, or leave translated blurbs without answers...

Correct answers will consist of a series title or (as appropriate) a series and story title - closest wins.  'Win' means kudos and I won't be tracking who gets how much kudos!  I haven't included any Dredd Case Files or Treasury of British Comics.

First one coming up in a few minutes when I decide which to start with...

* Translator Fails: The Sound of Silence, Africa and the inevitable internet song.

Classifieds / Black Friday deals
« on: 27 November, 2020, 12:25:11 PM »
Not sure if it belongs in Classified or Off Topic, as I'm not actually selling anything personally.

Just wondering what good deals there are (of interest to us lot) out there?

F'rinstance Warlord Games has a whole bunch of stuff (including Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog) on offer today.

Along the lines of How many Judges... thread and Current Population of Mega City One...? so if you don't like analysing made-up stuff then best to go to another thread...

In my prog slog blog I've recently come across some interesting*§ figures.

We're told a few times that citiblocks have at least 60,000 residents, though we're not given an upper limit and very rarely given the population of a given block.  The F. Loyd Mazny Complex was designed for 2,000,000 people†.  In the following figures I'm assuming the average amount of people in a 'block'‡ is 60,000.

Highest pre-War sector number: 555.
Average population per sector: 1,441,441
Blocks per sector: 24

Highest post-War sector number: 305.
Average population per sector: 1,311,475
Blocks per sector: 21

* if this is the kind of thing you find interesting, obviously
§ though possibly also inaccurate
† though we know how that turned out
‡ I'm also including con-apts and other large residential buildings as 'blocks'

General / Noel Clarke
« on: 02 June, 2020, 01:32:57 PM »
You may know Noel Clarke from such TV shows as Doctor Who and variously writing, acting, directing Kidulthood, Adulthood, Brotherhood, Bulletproof, 4,3,2,1, Fishermen's Friends.

Now he's interested in working with 2000AD...

General / what could helm be?
« on: 12 May, 2020, 10:08:53 PM »
Just listening to Space Spinner 2000: Collection 20 – Rogue Trooper Volume 1 Part 1 and Conrad's closing thoughts highlight how passive a character Helm is.  So my question is - if you were writing Rogue back in the early eighties and wanted to give all three chips more to do, what would Chip 1 be?  2 is a gun, which has obvious plots points in a future war strip, 3 is a bag full of grenades (and whatever else the plot needs) but 1 is a hat.

So, bank holiday tomorrow.  What's everybody planning on doing?

I'll assume everybody will observe the two minutes silence at 11:00, local laws and social distancing.

We'll be heading off for a long ride (though long probably means less than three hours).

Off Topic / an important news thread
« on: 01 April, 2020, 06:52:54 PM »
There's the politics thread (and a spin-off), the RIP thread and threads devoted to good and bad events affecting forum members' lives.  But it's about time we had a thread devoted to the really serious, penetrating issues which are out there in the world of journalism.

I'll start.

Bin.

The story is four years old, and I don't know if there was any follow-up in that august publication, but I feel there are things missing in that article.  What colour was the bin?  Is it being repainted in a new colour?  Why no picture of the offending article (the bin, not the article about the bin)?

Bedspreads - Judge Dredd
After Spizzenergi but before Anthrax (though around the same time as the Fink Brothers) there was another Judge Dredd song!
