Title: MARCH ART COMP - 2000AD LANDSCAPES
Post by: CrazyFoxMachine on 01 March, 2014, 02:04:52 PM
From February's winner Jon Taylor:

Quote I was thinking the themes always tend to be very character-centric, so maybe something more about the worlds... your take on MC 1 or Mazeworld or Xanadu or Downlode...

YOU HEARD THE MAN. Flex those landscape muscles - what twothy location is particularly evocative to you? Cityscapes, landscapes, I'll even accept just buildings or monuments - just make sure the location is the star!

- Remember there are PRIZES TO BE WON - one for the winner, one for Tharg's Choice - ! All entries will be featured on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp) where they are admired and liked by our 295 followers :D There will also be a bonafide 2000ad droid judging their favourite entry for Droid's Choice... we've previously had Chris Weston, Steve Yeowell, Brian Bolland, Leigh Gallagher and John Higgins. Who KNOWS who we'll snag next?!

Rules are these:

- You can enter as many times as you like but bear in mind it will split your vote so it may not be worth it!
- All entries have to be specifically for this competition - so no pictures you've done for anything else.

YOU HAVE UNTIL THE 30th OF MARCH WHEN WE WILL RIDE THE VOTING SWAN

For inspiration look no further than regular contributor, speed-painter extraordinaire and February's Tharg's Choice Pictsy whose "2000ad wallpaper project" is a goldmine for 2000ad landscapes:

A bit of experimenting with watercolours, ink and Photoshop tonight. Just trying something different.

DEADWORLD, Judge Death's home world.

That is lovely Archie. If 'lovely' is the right word for Deadworld.
I don't think I've ever drawn a landscape before. I've been staring at Ernst 'Europe After the Rain part II' for inspiration. Not the same at all but there's a similarity in the abstraction of your approach. love the balance of the bones and windows, land and clouds.

Hey thanks very much Ragged, nice of you to take the time to comment. I've never seen that Ernst picture before but I can see what you mean. Don't know if you've a FB account but if you do PM me your name and I'll let you into the process over there.

I wasn't going to do this, but then I got doodling on a conference call and it all got out of hand. Again.

It did also occur that having picked a potentially time-consuming theme I should probably throw my hat in the ring.

Here's a Quartz Zone aftermath thing.

As Archie says, these get a bit compressed, so there's a larger one for anyone interested, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25024/Nu_earth_004.jpg (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25024/Nu_earth_004.jpg)

Post by: Jon on 04 March, 2014, 08:28:31 AM
Your mum...looks very...um...organic...

I was trying to do a black hole, but I don't really know what a black hole looks like, so I made a swirly thing with black in it. And then some red. At one point it was bluey-green (or aqua, if you want the layman's term), but then it really didn't look like a black hole anymore. Or possibly it did. I panicked though cos it didn't have any black in it and that was really one of the only two cues I had. The other being, um, "hole".

I just don't have the conviction to pull off "your mum" jokes.

Here is my latest WIP of the Rogue Scum Sea image, still laying down the values in greyscale, next step will be further refining of details before adding the colour. Spent some time detailing the distant acid rain storm

Just a thought — it's probably best to keep WIPs off the Comp thread and post them to the 'Does My Art' or 'Hot Dang Doodle' threads.

If you post multiple WIPs to the Comp thread, you run the risk of CFM picking up an incomplete version for the voting thread and, at the very least, it makes collecting all the entries together for the voting thread just a little bit more of a headache than it needs to be...

Cheers!

Nononono! It's not a rule or anything — it's just that CFM's easily confused as it is... making things more complicated is just asking for trouble!

Aw thanks, that's good of you.

To be honest, I never really intended to enter this month. The whole thing developed from being distracted on a conference call as a bit of a doodle, and got worked up as the day filled up with further conference calls. As a result I'm not that happy with it and that, in conjunction with a couple of other things that have annoyed me recently, just make me not want to engage in the process right now.

Sorry to mess you all around. Sorry Owen....I will beg forgiveness with cider at some point, no doubt.

Anyway, this way I get to sit back and judge the rest of you. ;)

Silly me... I just saw those broken teeth and the wrong-think brain-leap was complete...  If I'd registered the intact Land Raider (rather than the stylish convertible look) I'd probably have figured this out for myself eventually.  Ah well, I still love it.

For the record, Brother Morgar's choppers were in relatively good shape.

Anyway, this way I get to sit back and judge the rest of you. ;)

Hi Jon, I thought your piece was excellent mate, nice brushstrokes throughout and an interesting twist on Nu-Earth.

;)

Can't wait to see your Scum Sea piece up.

Leaving only seven images then as we thunder into the last 10 days - slowest comp we've had for a while - !

Nooo! Why? Even your distracted conference call doodle could be someone else's month long effort! I think it's great as it is but I do get it. Sometimes a picture with that undefinable, glaring mistake that only you can see is enough for to get binned.

Yeah, I've reinstated the first one, just for the hell of it. Still don't like it, but meh.

It just coincided with some things I was looking to try anyway. I say coincided - a cynical observer would note that I did pick the theme....

Good month though, I think; seeing some really strong and different pieces.

Your own piece (to pick one at random :)) is very haunting. Like a stark de Chirico. I like the almost aquatint effect ceiling too.

I honestly hope, as much as I'd love to see a sequel or two, that we never make it to Dredd 17...

My original idea was to do a landscape around Filmore Faro's trash mine, tomb and pyramids form the Judge Child story but the joke idea of my Shako piece came to me and I never got started on it.

Maybe I will have a go for my own amusement sometime.

That Hall of Justice is stunning.

Really struggled with this one, did 3 landscape roughs that just didn't work. Picture only started to make sense to me when i put a POV character in.
Also, I wanted colours to be feverish sickness but think it's ended up looking like candy fairground.
Ah well...

Though it is known for it's futurism, 2000AD often has a lot of environments you could argue are based in history, a lot of the times via a future vehicle. Be it dimension jumping, time travel or plain alternate realities. This is jyust another of the many feathers this anthology's cap is capable of. In particular 2000AD has had quite a few forays in Olde Londone Towne.

There's a hardback coffeetable book in this- Tharg's Lovely Book of 2000AD's Expanded Universe. Do it like that Ralph McQuarrie Star Wars one of a decade or so ago, wrap a series of reports from a Quaxxanian researcher investigating Tharg's career around the images, and watch the groats roll in. Beautiful stuff, one and all.

I've already commented the earlier posts so;

@Hoagy: Nice moody piece.
@RaggedMan: very trippy, fits well into the Nemesis universe
@Jon: I really like the muted palette, the sky and background buildings are great.
