Books & Comics / The Beano and The Dandy
19 October, 2012, 07:55:47 PM
Upon musing on the replies to my previous thread about kids' comics, I decided to have a look at some modern-day Beanos and Dandys and websites associated with them.
Basically, both could pretty much be called 'Farts Weekly' these days.  The word 'fart' didn't even appear in Oink, or 2000ad until the 90s for that matter, but it's pretty much the backbone of the two remaining old-style kids' comics.
Also spotted a joke about Harry Hill ogling Nigella Lawson's tits, and lots of shit-related humour too.
Why not, I suppose - that's what I would have found funny at that age.

Also a massive Viz influence these days ('pump gas', 'Mr Meecher the Uncool Teacher') and a bit of Simpsons-style stuff thrown in for good measure.  And some of the 3-panel cartoons are actually quite funny - which is, for me, an absolute first for the Beano and Dandy.

All in all, very different in style from the ones I used to read.  Not a criticism, just an observation - in fact I was usually a Buster / Whizzer and Chips kid, finding the Beano and Dandy a little bit old-fashioned even then.

The Matrix.
The programme Noel Fielding did after the Mighty Boosh, whatever it was called.
The Doors.
Much of David Bowie's 70s Ziggy Stardust stuff (I prefer his 80s stuff).
Most fruit.

I really hated Alan Craddock's colouring.  But I must say, I really liked Gina Hart's colouring of Zenith Phase 4. Some people say Zenith should have stayed monochrome but I disagree. All those flat blocks of day-glo colour were perfect for the whole Baggy / Rave scene that Zenith was dabbling in then, and also for the psychedelic mind-attacks of the Lloigor.  Also a nice break from the legions of Bisley copyists of the time.  Wonder what happened to Gina Hart?

My word, he enjoyed drawing her, didn't he? And a quick Google search reveals that the sexiness continued well into the noughties: Nothing like a spot of bondage for the kiddies

The helmet's too big.  (To be absolutely honest, I always thought Johnny's willyish helmet was a bit crap anyway.  But I suppose if I had a 70s perm I'd wear it too.)

Christ on a bike, that's a blast from the past!  Most smartphones don't even have the buttons these days.
Well done to Douglas anyway, must start reading the blog!

Fukkinell, despite the poor black lad winning the day, that's a bit much, eh?  I also don't remember kids' comics being as scatalogical as that but I've always loved that artist despite not knowing his name before.  I clearly remember his utterly irrelevant but brilliantly Pythonesque background objects (EEC smelly sock mountains, joke false teeth factories, little signs saying 'Abolish Tuesdays') and outstanding sound effects ('Short fat hairy legs going 90 to the dozen!')

I also remember my little brother (30 today, Odin bless him) reading the Topper, which for some reason got a bit raunchy now and again - Cuddles' mother suddenly became a very sexy blonde and was shown running naked out of the shower (the naughty bits just about covered up), for example, and a smashed wall revealed another hot chick in a bath (arm strategically placed over nipples).

I think I've mentioned it on the board many times before, but the panel that had the biggest effect on me was from Zenith Phase 4, where the
universe that the Lloigor have taken over is revealed to be the little glass pyramid in Peter St John's hand
.  I'd missed the episode of Zenith where he first met Chimera, so maybe I'd have seen it coming otherwise.  But I didn't and it blew me away, it really did.  Nobody does messing with scale like Grant Morrison.

QuoteFrom my own childhood, I often wondered if this world really existed where each day would routinely end with a man beating his child with footwear.

Two of my mates' dads did exactly that; though I strongly suspect they got the idea from comics themselves.  Which is quite sad when you think about it

Ron Smith being fired by fax? That seems wildly unlikely. Why? Because Ron worked through an agency, Temple Rogers. When I was at the Meg and then 2000AD [July 25, 1990 - June 30, 2000], all communications with Ron were via his agent Pat at Temple Rogers. Pat brought Ron's art in, dropped off invoices, collected scripts for Ron to draw. Fired by fax? I don't think so.

Thanks, David, nice to hear it from the horse's mouth, as the fella said earlier.  It was definitely Ezquerra who Alan Moore said was fired, but that also seems highly unlikely.
I always enjoy Alan Moore's hugely insightful and entertaining interviews and truly believe he's one of the best comic writers that's ever lived, but I can't really see why he has quite such a big beef with 2000AD, and I also wish he'd check his facts before spieling them out like that. I suppose that's what happens when a Roman-times pretend snake is your Lord and Keeper.

I heard a good interview between Moore and Steward Lee on Radio 4's  'Chain Reaction' about 7 years ago.  The Moore/Eno one probably comes from the same series.  If just remember Moore saying Americans didn't mind if you suggested that they were inbred but went beserk you pointed out that their gun laws were a bit silly.

I've head that Stewart Lee one - it goes one more step in proving that Alan Moore is the best interviewee in the world.  Stewart Lee is a very funny guy but Moore steals the show

I thought it was Ron Smith fired by fax. Again, probably wrong, but a bad show whoever it was (if it ever happened). Phenominally disrespectful...

Seriously doubt if it was Ron Smith either, he'd probably have mentioned it in the Megazine interview.  As well as being way too good an artist to fire by any medium

I also remember a be-turbaned, Indian dog in Nutty called Singh-Songh. Not sure if that's racist; but all his mates seemed to be British so hats off to them for promoting multi-culturalism

Quoteand some of the shit they'd happily show to seventies / early eighties kids which you'd never see at the time.

Aaand that doesn't make a flitther of sense.  Which you'd never see now, I mean.
