So, anyone else think that when they brought up the Axe, that they were foreshadowing Rick or someone else getting their hand chopped off? When it looked like Rick was going to be the one to cut off Carl's arm I was like, That's a real twist.

Instead of Rick it's poor Carl. Seriously At that point I was feeling sorry for Carl. First his Mom then his eye now his arm? I was going 'Damn, they are really putting Carl through the wringer aren't they?
 overall it was a fantastic piece of work and JDM really hit it out of the park as Negan. Now I'm real curious to see where this series goes.

Well, I wasn't expecting that at all....to be greeted this morning with a text from a mate (currently holidaying in the US) telling me that he couldn't believe that this and that had happened, and if I enjoyed the episode.

Cue me shooting off a reply thanking him for the spoilers and reminding him while he's off in the US that I am still in the UK and therefore will see it tonight.

American telly - you can show someone getting their head smashed in but don't you dare say fuck!

I liked how they pulled the rug from us comic readers.

Negan in the show is much more interesting than Negan in the comics, because he doesnt talk like a 12 year old trying to sound hard.

I liked how they pulled the rug from us comic readers.

This. And additionally it gave a real sense that no-one was safe.

That was half-brilliant and half shite. The happy dinner table? Give me a break. The twee incidental music as everyone understands the impact of what they have seen? No thanks.

But the event itself, Negan, the neck stretching zombie and Andrew Lincoln's near  wordless   performance  (including snot bubble) were all great.

I should add "but all a bit too much like the torture prob the comics sometimes descends to. Compare this to the sublime Season 4 episode "The Grove" and it's like two different shows entirely."

Yeah I let out a gleeful cheer at that moment! I reckon whenever you see 'Directed by Greg Nicotero' in the opening credits you're in for at least one truly memorable zombie kill, and this was another level.
: Re: The Walking Dead - Season 7
: Tiplodocus 15 February, 2017, 11:32:01 AM
It could have spent a bit more time building up the tension and excitement for THAT scene rather than the treading over old ground we had in the rest of the episode.

And though I understand the logic of that big booby trap, it would have been better that a character knew about it and instigated the action rather than them just coming across it by chance just after Darryl says "We need something like this"..

I'm thinking that this season needs to be like an elaborate heist movie where they move all of the pieces and set the plans into motion to take down Negan.  But I get the feeling again that it will just be some speechifying and then wandering into battle with no clear plan (like they did at The Outpost).

That makes it sound like I didn't enjoy it; I did.  Some cute little character moments too.

That crossed my mind too.
It could be that they'll 'swap out' The Whisperers for the slightly less preposterous Scavengers in the TV show.

Pollyanna McIntosh would make a decent Alpha substitute too.
: Re: The Walking Dead - Season 7
: Keef Monkey 23 February, 2017, 10:06:55 AM
Yeah the whisperers substitute was my impression too. I found that given the way the last episode ended, the way that part started this week felt really odd and disjointed. I was a bit tired (and off sick with the lurgee) so maybe missed something, but just didn't seem to gel.

I mean, last week ended with Rick and co. being surrounded by the scavengers, then giving a smile of recognition. I'd assumed they were being lead by a face from the past or something and sat down to this week's episode expecting that to pay off. Then the first time we see them in this one are they coming out of a shipping container but Rick and co. are with them? It seemed really strange to have them pop out of there, and also strange to then have them surround them again, when we'd already had that. Maybe I'm weird (I'm no film-maker) but something about it just felt awkward and didn't read well for me.

Also, I still don't know what Gabriel had to do with them. I might have missed an explanation somewhere but didn't he do a runner with guns and supplies, then get caught by the scavengers, and Rick is okay with that because he apparently knew Gabriel wasn't actually running away or something? Again, the lurgee hath clouded my thoughts but I really didn't get that part.

As for the feature zombie, he looked cool as hell but that whole sequence didn't feel very Walking Dead. My wife only half watches the show while doing other things and looked up from her drawing to ask 'since when did Walking Dead become Mad Max?' and the only answer I had was 'since five minutes ago'. Still he looked cool. But again, that whole scene didn't make a lot of sense because it didn't serve a purpose because the scavenger leader seemed a bit meh about the whole thing, like she didn't know why it was happening either. Good choice of actor for her though, I recognized her as being from The Woman, which she was brilliant in.

A very weak episode all round I thought, with the only moment that felt noteworthy being Darryl and Carol's reunion - they've played that card a lot already and I'm sure it'll stop tugging my heart strings at some point but for now it still grabs them hard. It feels a lot like it's playing for time again, and with the way the ratings have supposedly been dropping I thought they'd be trying to really hit hard every week this season.

If I recall, they explained that Gabriel was forced to steal the supplies from Alexandria by The Scavengers and was then abducted by them (the person riding shotgun in his car last week must have been one of The Scavengers).

: Keef Monkey 23 February, 2017, 03:21:49 PM
Right enough, I'm forgetting he had someone in the car with him. Still, he seemed quite cheerful as he was packing up the guns etc., I got the impression it was a plan he'd hatched rather than something he'd been put up to under duress. Maybe he was chipper because he could see far enough ahead to know how it would pan out and that it would lead to an epic team-up, but it still felt a bit muddled and out of nowhere to me.

Nice to see that they used an Amiga for this weeks CGI  :|
: Re: The Walking Dead - Season 7
: Keef Monkey 08 March, 2017, 09:21:31 AM
The CG in the show does bother me sometimes - the deer this week looked pretty bad, and the shot last week of the impaled decaying zombie on the fence was very rough too. It's a shame when the show uses CG, because it's almost always poor and pulls you out of it, especially as the Nicotero physical effects look so cool when they do use them (the fat-necked zombie encounter this week was very nice and seemed to be all prosthetics).

I get that it's a time thing and that doing it physically would just take too long or be too expensive, but given the show's production values and how good some other shows look (we're rewatching Battlestar just now and the space battles are incredible for a TV show) it is always a little surprising when TWD's effects occasionally clunk like that.

The season 7.5 drinking game:

Step 1) Take a shot of blackjack schnapps every time Rick smiles for no reason.
Step 2) Join the un-dead via alcohol poisoning.
: Re: The Walking Dead - Season 7
: Tiplodocus 11 March, 2017, 12:59:18 PM
I thought you were being harsh on the cgi when I first saw the deer. Then it turned up again.

That was a better balance of talky and action (and obligatory characters being plain daft) that I like in Walking Dead.

But it wasn't brilliant. We need this to be an average episode and better stuff to knock our socks off.
: Re: The Walking Dead - Season 7
: Proudhuff 13 March, 2017, 06:10:34 PM
I thought that deer was a plastic one from the Funfair at first, they might have been better using one, or at least a stuffed one?

I couldn't get me head around what that place was supposed to be: a Army supply dump come funfair?
and the whole car window/boot/backseat/sunroof thing seemed ill thought out... but I did laugh at the sad sack soldier falling to pieces and the brakes not working

oh and are the Junkyard people in the comic? I can't remember them, are they just there to make up the numbers?
: Re: The Walking Dead - Season 7
: Steve Green 13 March, 2017, 07:19:11 PM
Looking at clips online - I don't think it was CGI (at least not 3D), but a live action one rotoscoped and composited.

But yeah a bit weird for a high budget show like that.

So how many episodes left in this series?

Anyone putting money on the big show down being before or after the last minute of the last one?

How much meat does a tiger eat a day?  I seem to recall there was a bit in the comics letter page about the tiger eating TWD, but that would be like the pigs eating one, surely it would pass on, thinking scrapie/madcow disease type of thing?

Well, I finally got round to watching the last episode last night.  Wow, what a mess.  Considering the scope that they had for a truly epic finale with the source material, half of the episode was spent in metaphysical meanderings that did absolutely nothing except confuse the audience.  It is easy to understand why the ratings were so low on this.  The last twenty minutes or so finally got its mojo back a little and has set up the scene for next season.  One can only hope that it is a case of they've been saving up the budget for a truly epic season, or at the very least one that is watchable.

Well, I finally got round to watching the last episode last night.  Wow, what a mess.

Yeah, it was a big letdown to be honest. I found the whole season disappointing, apart from a couple of episodes (first episode was good, and the one that focused on Daryl's incarceration was my favourite of the season).

The final episode was shambolic! 20 mins of pointless flashbacks which  could've been handled better with a swift five minute scene. Everyone firing fully automatic weapons and hardly anyone getting hit! The Scavengers*(who don't seem to be able to string a sentence together) are masters of duplicity and subterfuge! And a Tiger that knows exactly who to kill!

Crap!

*it's been suggested by some that the Scavengers are in fact immigrants and that English isn't their native language. If that was the case I would have thought they would revert to their original speech patterns rather then try to converse with each other in a language they don't fully understand.

Must admit that I was disappointed with the season as well. Took the shine of the walking dead for me.

Rick proved generally useless throughout most of the season, and this episode once again made him look ineffective.
: Re: The Walking Dead - Season 7
: Tjm86 09 April, 2017, 09:26:12 AM
Too true.  In the comic series it is made clear that it is a ruse on Rick's part to lull Negan into a false sense of security whilst he bides his time to find a decent solution.  In this season it almost seems like they wanted to play it as Rick was seriously shaken by it, lost all faith in his leadership ability and needed time to rebuild his faith in himself.  Unfortunately either they forgot that that was how they were going to play it, played it out so subtly that the audience missed it completely (and you see a spark of that in the final episode when he does finally find his testicles again) or just completely bollixed it up.  I know which one I'm voting for.

Bring back crazy Rick. It's the Neegan moments that have saved this series.

Having read the books up to date I was hoping that after this seasons episode 1 that the rest would have built up to a "war" which only lasted the last 4 episodes of this season. Too many filler episodes - I don't mind different story lines or Characters appearing but they have to up the pace to keep me interested. The seasons may just be too long to write decent scripts(thinking back to the time at the farm).

I dread another long drawn out season where the war is only concluded in the final episode. Which is what should have happened this season and then I'd be looking forward to the new community which emerges and then new threat on the horizon.

Everyone firing fully automatic weapons and hardly anyone getting hit!

It was as unintentionally comical as the climax to an average 1986 episode of The A-Team.

Worst season yet for me, capped off with a very sloppy finale.

I'm rootin for Negan and The Saviors at this stage ffs.

On a more positive note, I like what they've done with Eugene's heel-turn.
It actually makes perfect sense for the character.

They do get away, sheridan, but you'll have to wait until the last episode of the season.

So apparently despite a drop in ratings, TWD will continue, and they're saying it will go on far at least over 20 seasons.
If this last series is any indication, I won't be tuning in. I really miss the more thoughtful horror series TWD started out as, instead of the pale imitation it's become.

So almost by accident I stumbled back into Walking Dead and I'm watching Season 7 and its a bit rubbish. Coming in I was aware that it didn't have a good reputation but I enjoyed Season 2 so I figured maybe this will be the same - but nah everyone is right - so far at least - its pants.

I've just watched Episode 7, Rick finds a boat, Spencer makes a cliche - such a cliche - mistake, has he never seen Die Hard? Darryl gets out and we all smile at a lovely reunion at the end and stride purposely forward as we've all learnt we can't do it alone ... but together... (Christ that bit was dreadful)

...oh except Carol (still the best thing in the show) Carol is still mardy.

ANYWAY a LOT happened, but it was all so forced. The dialogue was terrible PEOPLE. SAYING. IMPORTANT. THINGS. WITH. MEANING... and while they weren't shouting it all felt like it was in all caps.

Actions were justified - but still made very little sense and I know a lot of folks dig Negan and he is terrifying, but he's also getting boring pretty quickly. All his long considered speeches to show us how he uses his charisma and terror to control folks... but its all a bit silly in the end - he's such a VILLAIN and has nothing to him.

And yet I've watched an episode and a half tonight and I was just starting the next... its bloody rubbish but I'm still watching!

After the prison season and up to when they first meet Negan I was engaged and happy with the differences with the books then they dragged it out and it’s been like that ever since. Only the occasional episode that’s been decent. But for my sins I’ve kept on with it but only watching on catchup rather than eagerly looking forward to each new episode. I just want to see it to the end now - a bit like “Lost”.
Not the best write up to encourage you to see out season 7 sorry

I've never quite understood all the hate for TWD.  I've enjoyed it all the way along - I mean it's not the best show ever made, but it's better than most.  It was Negan who made my brother give up on it, but that's another thing I don't get - for me he's been a fairly engaging bad guy, and his character development after he was allowed to live was very intriguing for me.
