Title: Festive Thrill-Tree: GN Blurb Translated Too Many Times
Post by: sheridan on 01 December, 2020, 10:06:59 AM
This is my sort-of-quiz, as mentioned in some thread or other (I thought it was the no advent calendar this year thread (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=47125), but apparently not).

Inspired by a YouTube channel*, I've taken the blurb for various 2000AD collected editions (from the 2000AD webshop) and used Google Translate multiple times, then translated back in to English.  I've had to do some jiggling about to take away names that would be an immediate give-away (sometimes Translate will turn names in to a word, then that word gets translated through other languages, sometimes not).

Not exactly sure how this will work - I expect I'll post the translation here, update the Forum Tree Present thread (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=47143) then allow a day or two for forumites to guess which collection it originally came from.  If nobody gets it within a day I'll probably post the answer, maybe an additional day on weekdays (sorry, shift workers).

No doubt I'll get mixed up somewhere along the way and post the answer along with the blurb, or leave translated blurbs without answers...

Correct answers will consist of a series title or (as appropriate) a series and story title - closest wins.  'Win' means kudos and I won't be tracking who gets how much kudos!  I haven't included any Dredd Case Files or Treasury of British Comics.

First one coming up in a few minutes when I decide which to start with...

* Translator Fails: The Sound of Silence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccYpEv4APec), Africa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdYCIqCj7IE) and the inevitable internet song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur560pZKRfg).

I think this one is quite an easy one to start with (though the exact collection name would probably flummox me).

Quote
The devil?

A former bronze-nose inspector who was insulted and cursed by extraordinary powers, is responsible for protecting the summit and treaty between the kings of England and the armies of hell.

When the cancer spread, called his friend to help save the grandchildren who had been expelled from the plant.

I'll also post the original blurb once somebody guesses the answer.

I'll spoilerify for those who want to guess:
Absalom: Terminal Diagnosis
.

"Bronze-nosed"   This a great idea, Sheridan, thanks!

I'd make the same guess - though the brilliant "bronze-nosed" made me think of Tycho Brahe, which threw me off for a while.

Great idea, Sheridan. I may have to steal it for the ISIHaP thread...

For the impatient - Tordel got it right (thanks for adding the spoiler tag - means other people can play along before I post the answer tomorrow - and you'll see just where 'bronze-nosed' came from).

Great idea for a quiz! My guess was gonna be
Defoe: Queen of Witches
but I was quite wrong.

Not sure of the specific title but this bit

Quote
When the cancer spread, called his friend to help save the grandchildren...
Means its got to be
Absalom
and so I'll go '
Ghosts of London
'

As others have said fantastic quiz!

I actually did about half of the blurbs I'm going to post a few months ago when I first got the idea (so really happy there's an advent calendar / festive thrill-tree so I can actually use them).  This does mean that when I was looking through them more recently I had the chance to look at the badly-translated blurbs out of context.  I thought this one was going to be
Dandridge: The Copper Conspiracy
until I got to the
cancer
bit.

Great idea - I recognize it as
Absalom
, and it's the plot from
Terminal Diagnosis
, but I don't know if they used that title for the collection.

Can anyone guess this movie: "Put Peppers and Musicians, Musicians Group, Monthly Population Loving Animals."?

No. Oddly, the best clues are either "Peppers" or "Musicians Group" - I've no idea where the loving animals came from, but it's funny.

Not that I'm aware that it was ever made in to a film, but Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?  Loving Animals could have come from 'hearts' and 'Beatles'.

So, you're super close. The text was a summary of a film, so the title of the movie is not in the text.

Original text:
The music-loving inhabitants of Pepperland are under siege by the Blue Meanies, a nasty group of music-hating creatures.
Kudos goes to TordelBack for getting Absalom: Terminal Diagnosis - original blurb as follows:
Quote from: 2000AD
TO HELL AND BACK?

Old, irreverent and doomed by supernatural forces, hard-nosed copper Detective Inspector Harry Absalom is tasked with upholding the Accord – the treaty between the British Royalty and the forces of Hell.

As the cancer finally starts to take hold, Harry calls in every friend and favour he has left in a last-ditch attempt to save his kidnapped grandchildren from the depths of the Mills...
And as a reminder, the translated version was:
Quote from: google
The devil?

A former bronze-nose inspector who was insulted and cursed by extraordinary powers, is responsible for protecting the summit and treaty between the kings of England and the armies of hell.

When the cancer spread, called his friend to help save the grandchildren who had been expelled from the plant.

Today's one as follows:
Quote from: google
They're turning the world around... now it's more than a hard bear right now!

Over a forest, gay men prepare the eyes of a ship that have taken the pirates back to slavery in the banana house makes mistakes, start the error signal.

I'm thinking Red Seas but only because "gay men" could be "jolly rodger" and it mentions pirates.

See, I thought one or two people might fall for the 'bear' trap at the beginning, but that as long as they ignored that then they'd get on the right track...

Two clues:
Title: Re: Festive Thrill-Tree: GN Blurb Translated Too Many Times
Post by: sheridan on 03 December, 2020, 12:11:45 PM
Nobody guessed correctly!  I'd expected at least on person to read 'bear' in the first line and think it was Shako (it isn't).

The translated version as follows:
Quote from: googleThey're turning the world around ... now it's more than a hard bear right now!

Over a forest, gay men prepare the eyes of a ship that have taken the pirates back to slavery in the banana house makes mistakes, start the error signal.

The original version:
Quote from: RebellionTHEY COLONISED EARTH... NOW THEY'RE ALL LARGER THAN GRIZZLY BEARS!

2127 AD: High above the Peruvian rainforest, vast, eerie creatures fix compound eyes on a vessel transporting the notorious Fendito 'the Bandito' back into custody in the South-Am mega-city of Cuidad Barranquilla. For 'Banana City' judges Xavi Ancizar and Sofia Perez, the bug hunt is just beginning ...

It's Zancudo (I would also have accepted 'stealth sequel to Ant Wars set in the Dreddverse').  From what I can guess, "vast, eeries creatures" may have been translated in to "gay men" - presumably eerie, strange, queer featured in some of the intermediary languages.

Today's mistranslated blurb coming when I decide which one to post...

Neither of the day three guesses are correct yet.  In general I'd disregard any mention of 'comedy' or 'comedians', as the mistranslator has difficulty with the words 'comic', 'comic writer' or 'comic artist' when they crop up in the original blurbs.

As mentioned up-thread, I, Cosh won with Return to Armageddon.

The translated blurb was:
Quote from: googleAstro Demon Development!

When the astronauts expel the world's deadliest body by accident to release destructive energy into the galaxy! Only one person has the power to end their lives! The last rhetoric in air battles, laziness and atrocities in this epic style of comedy.

The original blurb was (I took a few obvious names out).  I think zombies translates as 'laziness'.
Quote from: RebellionRise Of The Astro-Demon!

When the crew of a deep space transport ship extracts a demonic-looking alien corpse from a frozen world, they unwittingly unleash a destructive force upon the galaxy! Only one man – the twin brother of the 'Destroyer', has the power to stop the total annihilation of existence! Space battles, zombies and the ultimate embodiment of evil all appear in this epic cross-genre tale from the fevered imagination of Malcolm Shaw (The Eagle, Misty, Scream) and veteran comic artist Jesus Redondo (Nemesis the Warlock, Star Trek, Kitty Pryde).

Today's quiz coming up when I decide which one to pick!

Here goes.  It reads like some weird monologue but I promise it was taken from blurb on the 2000AD website and put through however-many languages.

Quote from: googleAll...

Hello when he gets tired of his life in the fence - doing something in the future and where happiness doesn't fly in bed - he really wants to get out of bed. But it is difficult to find the right plan and other bombs to build Jane in a rebellious city that seems too expensive for freedom before the debate.  In order to survive, you need to worry about your life on the ground: Do something later, happiness will not flow out of bed, your bed should stay. And I thought I would have needed to delete the name Shako - but instead it got translated to Chess (no idea why/how).

Original:
Quote from: RebellionIt amused Shako to see the human squirm!

When a US Air Force plane crashes within the Arctic Circle, Shako – the terror of the frozen wastes – arrives at the crash site, getting his first taste of human flesh! Unfortunately for the C.I.A. Shako has swallowed a top secret capsule, and now they must track down the savage beast to retrieve it. This won't be an easy task as Shako hates mankind, and what Shako hates, Shako destroys!

Written by 2000 AD legends Pat Mills (Nemesis the Warlock, Charley's War) and John Wagner (A History of Violence, Judge Dredd), with stunning art from a number of European artists, including Ramon Sola (Flesh), Shako is a bear necessity for all comic book fans.

Quote from: GoogleI was amazed to see the chess boy sound the alarm!

When an plane crashes, chess reaches the crash site and tastes human flesh for fear of icy debris! Unfortunately, the chess swallowed a very secret and had to find an animal to take it. Hates people, what he hates is destruction.

Britain has something in common, but in London favours the brave young girl. But there will always be foreign hunters who will take the lead in the bad food trade and risk joining the cooperative government from the prime minister. It's RIP soon.

If I was keeping tabs I'd have to decide between ming (for getting Aquila) or Colin YNWA (for getting Blood of the Iceni as well).

Original:
Quote from: RebellionENTER THE SOUL TRADER!
IT WAS A TIME OF GREAT TURMOIL. Slave-turned-gladiator, Aquila was amongst those crucified following Spartacus's failed revolt. Dying a slow death, he cried out to the gods for vengeance – and Ammit the Devourer answered, offering him invulnerability in return for the souls of evil men. Now, Aquila hunts the breadth of the Empire determined to repay his unholy debt.

Pretty pleased that Google translated 'eagle' to 'hawk' thus planting the seed of doubt over whether it was Aquila or Blackhawk :-)

I wouldn't be able to keep up the daily translations throughout 2021, but weekly or monthly may be possible (I'd have to look at just how many original blurbs I can get my hands on).

The fearsome foursome are intent on bringing their brand of justice to Mega-City One. Only Judge Dredd and Psi-Division's finest telepath Cassandra Anderson can stop them from committing a Mega-City massacre!

The specific edition was this one: Judge Dredd: The Dark Judges (https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/GRN462) (containing Judge Death, Judge Death Lives and the debut Anderson series).  Tordel identified the DJs, AlexF identified one of the stories and Colin YNWA got the specific edition.

Quote from: RebellionAnimal Rescue!

Caught in the blast of a nuclear explosion, SAS Sergeant Nick Stone finds himself flung into the far-future where the last remaining humans are led by a merciless tyrant called Leeshar and rule over the eugenically – modified animal castes known as 'Yujees'.

Accompanied by catwoman Liana, bullman T-Bone and loyal wolfman Gruff, Stone is intent on ending Leeshar's dark reign by leading the slave-like Yujees in rebellion! Featuring the incredible art of the late great Massimo Bellardinelli (Ace Trucking, Flesh) and a high-octane script from Alan Hebden (Major Eazy, Death Planet).

The confusing bits at the end were the 'other credits' sections - though I'm not sure how "Ace Trucking Co, Flesh" gets turned in to "the true king of the waterfall" - though Massimo did draw a pretty mean waterfall, so I'm not going to dispute it!

Nobody quite got it - AlexF was closest with Anderson, but I had a look and the story was in Psi Files 2 (not 3 or 4).  It was Anderson Psi Division - Shamballa.

Quote from: RebellionJOURNEY BEYOND THE GATES OF PERCEPTION!

In Mega-City One a brutal murder is discovered, seemingly of unnatural origin. Around the globe there is a massive surge in psychic phenomena as people fall prey to visions and religious mania. It seems that the world is on the brink of a psychic apocalypse and Psi-Judge Anderson must travel into the heart of Tibet to find the source of the disturbance! This collection bring together the very best of Alan Grant's (Lobo) and Arthur Ranson's (Button Man) work on this iconic comics character.

Anderson gets upgraded from 'pissy female' to 'CJI' this time around (wonder what Google Translate will do with 'Psi Division' next time?)

Colin YNWA, followed by Jayzus both got The Ballad of Halo Jones Book III!

Quote from: RebellionCaught in the Web

Her dreams of escape dashed, Halo has ended up on a decaying ghostworld, where the drink is the only thing that hasn't run dry. Having drifted from one dead-end job to another, her credits and hopes for the future have almost run out, but fortunately, the military is looking for new recruits. With no other way out, she enlists.

Quote from: GoogleTranslateOnline

The dream of escaping was a huge success, and Oreo took the life of a corrupt spirit, only a dry drink. From indifference to further indifference, their hopes of success and their future almost faded. But fortunately, the army is looking for new officers. He came in because he had no other choice.

If Google translate is getting from 'hopes of escape dashed' to 'dreams of escape were a huge success' it looks as if we've got a few years yet before our robot overlords take charge!

As for today's challenge... I would've said
Dead Eyes
if it had had its own collection - and we've already had
Ant Wars
, so it can't be that. So I'm thinking
Bad Company: Goodbye Krool World
The answer is Ant Wars (the previous formican story was Zancudo, not Ant Wars).  AlexF got it right (but then dismissed it due to Zancudo).

Quote from: RebellionTHEY COLONISED EARTH... NOW THEY'RE ALL LARGER THAN GRIZZLY BEARS!

When military personnel spray an untested insecticide on ants in the Brazilian rainforest, the colony mutate into super-intelligent creatures with a taste for human flesh! As the terrifying army head closer towards civilisation, Captain Villa and a young forest native race ahead in the vain attempt to warn an unprepared world!

Written by Gerry Finley-Day (Rogue Trooper), with Art by José Luis Ferrer (Robo-Hunter), Lozano (M.A.C.H.1), Pena (Planet of the Damned) and Azpiri (Black Hawk), Ant Wars is an exhilarating take on the classic sci-fi movies of the fifties and sixties.

Quote from: GoogleThe villagers have dug a bigger hole than the powder ... now!

As soldiers, they left in the shower, which was an insect of the jungle and boundless love, a colony of burritos, a species that is often required canned, which makes muscle thought and tasting. What I think is particuarly interesting is that both Zancudo and Ant Wars start with the following tagline:
Quote from: RebellionTHEY COLONISED EARTH... NOW THEY'RE ALL LARGER THAN GRIZZLY BEARS!

but when Google translated Zancudo it said:
Quote from: GoogleThey're turning the world around ... now it's more than a hard bear right now!

though for Ant Wars the same words came out as:
Quote from: GoogleThe villagers have dug a bigger hole than the powder ... now!

I think the 'Me Flower' was probably the clincher to narrow down exactly which DJ story it was.

Modern-day gladiatorial contests - man against man, usually to the death. A game of murder played for high stakes. The games are arranged by mysterious backers known as the 'Voices'; disembodied voices on the other end of a telephone, telling you where to go to, who to meet. A player can either become very rich or very dead, very quickly.

Quote from: RebellionFUTURE WAR HITS THE SAVAGE STREETS OF LONDON!

For this one, well its
DR and Quinch
isn't it and I'm assuming
'The Complete...'
as that's the edition in the Web store.

It is, of course, DR & Quinch (and I don't know what editions are out there but I imagine you'd be hard-pressed to get any collection that isn't the whole bunch, except maybe for the Jamie Delano one-pagers).

Quote from: Rebellion"THERMONUCLEAR WEAPONRY IS A GUY'S BEST FRIEND

Destroying the earth is but one trick in their wide repertoire, which also includes double-crossing, war-mongering, heart-breaking and making a hit Hollywood movie!

This comedy of inter-galactic proportions is brought to you by comic book supremo Alan Moore (V for Vendetta) and respected artist Alan Davis (Uncanny X-Men).

Also collected here for the first time in Graphic Novel format are all of the 'D.R. and Quinch's Incredibly Excruciating Agony Page' by Jamie Delano and Alan Davis.

Quote from: TranslationThe guys at Nuclear Weaponry are good friends

Telephone room and two foreigners left far from the world.  They are designed to entertain and create chaos. Destruction in the World is the trick to their great songs, including double crossing, fighting and making a heartbreaking!

This medium-sized comedy was brought in by comedian and acclaimed artist.

It was first collected here in graphic form by incredibly exclusive agonizing side.

I was supposed to carry on doing this after the advent calendar but didn't quite keep it up.  I figure it's probably about time I resurrected the thread about collected edition blurb being translated too many times.  I'll try to post one per week - if by any chance the correct answer hasn't been guessed half way through the week I'll see if I can think up a clue (judging by the advent calendar it won't take this long).

Or in translation (didn't translate it many times)...

Quote from: googleI should have continued this after the Advent calendar but it was not saved. I think the time has come to raise the question of the erroneous translation of a statement that has been raised many times. I try to post once a week; If by chance the correct answer is not guessed in the middle of the week, I will see if I can find a clue (judging by the Advent calendar, it will not take long).

p.s. please use spoiler tags on your answer to let other people have a guess.

p.p.s. I'm not including Judge Dredd Complete Case Files, preferring individual story collections.

Oh yes - and I should post the comparison - I had to censor the name Harry Absalom otherwise it would have been too easy!

Quote from: blurbBotA TOUCH OF HELLFIRE!

Old, irreverent and doomed by supernatural forces, hard-nosed copper Detective Inspector Harry Absalom is tasked with upholding the Accord – the treaty between the British Royalty and the forces of Hell.

A religious fanatic is killing illegal demonic hosts, upsetting both sides of the Accord... to prevent all-out war, Absalom and his psychotic ex-boss the Guv'nor need to catch the perpetrator before it's too late!

With his grandchildren held hostage to keep him in line, Harry will need all the help he can get his hands on! Especially when he discovers the sort of place they're being kept...

Probably not that difficult, but the fun is in seeing what the translation has done to the blurb.  I've still felt free to entirely remove the incredibly obvious bits which didn't get translated though (names of creators).

Forgot to say - yes, Funt Solo gets it 100% correct with Ro-Busters: International Robot Rescue!

Quote from: original-blurbSAVED FROM THE SCRAP HEAP BY BILLIONAIRE HOWARD QUARTZ, sewer droid Ro-Jaws and battle-weary war-bot Hammer-stein became part of Ro-Busters – Quartz's international, robotic rescue squad. Written by Pat Mills (The ABC Warriors) and featuring several British comic art luminaries, including Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), Ian Kennedy (Commando) and Kevin O'Neill (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), this first volume includes all of the original Starlord strips and colour spreads.

Right, I've read it and double-read it and don't see the name of the character in today's one...

I'd love ot know how Google goes from 'John Smith' to 'Knight Marsh Cyclical Art', but it's weirdly apt.

I confess until you pointed out 'Revere', I was stuck thinking it had to be either Canon Fodder or Zaucer of Zilk, but neither of those have proper collections, even digital, do they?

Well done to Huey2 for getting it so quickly!

Quick answer to AlexF - Google didn't so I had to just delete "John Smith" to avoid making it too easy.

Longer answer:

A straight-forward translation is that I use google translate to go through five or so languages, then back to English and there's nothing from the original blurb but still just enough idea for people to have a hope of getting it.

More complex (I did the current ones I posted about six months ago but seem to remember this one took a while) will refuse to change some elements - I think "London" and "John Smith" were particular bugbears.  When that happens I try to change the capitalisation so it treats "smith" as a word, not a name.  Unfortunately I think this was so universal a word that it just translated it back to "smith" no matter how many intermediary languages I went through.  Quite a few words and names Google Translate can't find an equivalent of so won't even try to translate.  In those cases I just have to delete the name (which I must have forgotten to do with "john probe" the previous day).  I actually find this quite interesting - that sweet spot between too universal to get mis-translated along the way but not too obscure that it won't get translated at all.

Quote from: original-flavourIt's the end of the world and he feels fine - meet Revere, the Witch Boy of London!

Written by John Smith with nightmarish psychedelic art from Simon Harrison, Revere is an inimitable psychedelic post-apocalyptic climate change coming-of-age fever dream, filled with magic, fascistic cops, and young love.

Immerse yourself in an unbeatable, wonderfully weird, trippy nightmare set in a post-apocalyptic London, via Francis Bacon, Romeo and Juliet, and Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi. Follow Revere as he parkours over the buildings of a crumbling capital, embarks on mystical drug-hazed misadventures, falls in love, and has to fight to discover his true self...

This new digital-only release is the perfect opportunity for fans to read one of Smith's seminal work.

F'r instance - I'd have thought that "nightmare" wouldn't have had any problems being translated, but we're left with "knight marsh".

Of course, quite a lot of that just sounded like a normal John Smith synopsis :)
