There is a video on YouTube giving the 2012 Dredd film a pasting and an early comment mentions that 'Mega City 1' is the most unoriginal name for a future city that there could be and it sounded like something a 5 year old think of. This may be true now but in the 70's I do not think the prefix 'mega' was any where as widely used or known as it is today.

It probably was. It was a bit juvenile (especially accompanying one of the earliest examples of John Smith doing horrible body horror in JD) and I suspect the ongoing violence "debate" in the lettercol exacerbated that impression.
