Title: Prog 2232 - A Small Sacrifice?
Post by: Colin YNWA on 15 May, 2021, 06:05:10 PM
The Prog all but clears its decks as we head into next week Regened Prog which I'm very much looking forward to seeing if it continues the momentum they've been building. I'm also happier with the way its not going to interupt the momentum of most other stories.

Dredd - for some reason I thought there was going to be more to this one. As it is its a beautifully drawn Future Shock with Dredd. Perfectly effective in that and very enjoyable, but after the excellent set up last week felt a little disappointed it was done so briskly. Still once I'm over that hard to deny its a fun story with another citzen getting a happy ending - all be it at a cost - what the hell is going on in Mega City One these days?!?

Intestinauts is well realised fun with a neatly horrific ending. Hard not to be washed along with the playful charm of this one.

Feral and Foe - the one that gets interrupted but does so at a decent point with a neat like self contained bit of trickery allowing our heroes to escape to their destination. Looking forward to getting this one back for what I assume will be its final act?

Decent Terror Tales though it did rather feel like John Tomlinson was trying a little too hard to slam two ideas together.

and then the big one how does Thistlebone stick the landing. Well with brutal bloody horror that's how. The sort of brutal bloody horror that makes you want to immediately go back and read the whole series from the off to see if you've missed any clues or foreshadowing. Its fantastic stuff and hope we spend more time in the woods... though if we don't this has been perfectly formed as if. Well done all concerned.

Thrills of the Future gives us the Chimpsky series we know is on the way so happy with that. Good Prog.

A good prog. An interesting cover by Simon Davis.

Dredd – A good functional two part which worked quite well but felt a little too short. Still enjoyable with a semi-happy ending. Good work from Carroll and Fraser

Intestinauts – A good thriller with a twist of Future Shock at the end. That first panel was quite striking. More of this please.

Feral & Foe – As our heroes enter the final level in the tale doom becomes light again. Goodness again from our creator team. Thumbs up.

Terror Tale – A good tale with a predictable ending but executed in a slightly different way what I expected.

Thistlebone – Just plainly put this was a gruesome brilliant ending to the series. Simon Davis art throughout this series was quite dazzling. What is next for the series? Is Thistlebone real or not?

This week it is all quiet on the Western Front, but you never know because next when the whistle blows it is over the top with hordes waiting and fuming at the other side.

If you collect and assembe all the Thistlebone covers, you can make your own hodgepodge Woodland Golem, to do battle against developers and HS1 engineers.

First things first, I love badgers so I did not like this cover. It is, of course, beautifully designed and painted, but as i say, I love badgers so... no thank you.

As for the actual contents- Dredd and Feral & Foe top the pile for me, with the Terror Tale nipping along behind. Not a fan of this 3Riller, but others seem to have liked it, so that's good- and Thistlebone ended making me wish I had paid more attention. I really need to drag out the back progs of both series and read in one go, so until I've done that I won't commit one way or the other.

One thing: Mr Jim Campbell- is that a spelling mistake in Feral & Foe? "Hear" and not "here"? The lettering on the strip- where it stands out from others due to the different styles of speech and balloons, is otherwise magnificent.

All in all a good prog- shame about the badger. I will not show this one to the brocks who meander around my garden. Not that I usually offer them 2000AD, you understand, but even so.

Can it really be eighteen years since the last time Tharg stuck a badger on the cover?

Oh that got me thinking and without going to Barney is that Devlin Waugh?

Ah, that period when they were clearly trying to make the Meg look like it was the '2000ad Megazine' rather then the 'Judge Dredd Megazine'. The clever positioning and de-emphasising of certain words and logos....

Although I too am a big fan of badgers, I have to say 2005 me would not have bought that Megazine even though it promises 100 PAGES MAXIMUM JUSTICE.

The cover to this weeks Prog however is ace, really striking. It took me a while to realise it's the Thistlebone mask painted to look like a badger - you can see the line of the skull down the middle. It's obvious, I know.

Dredd – Very much enjoyed this but I was surprised it wrapped up so quickly. Nice characters, nice setup and I think a longer story could have been told here. Simon Fraser's work on faces are so good! Another fairly optimistic ending, are we due Dredd killing some poor cit soon for something trivial? Although with times being a bit dark at the moment I actually appreciate this right now.

Intestinauts – Big fan of this. It did feel as though the Intestinaut involvement was a bit tagged on - the stuff with the Venom suit could all have potentially happened without it (especially as the blokes replacement suit seems able to move about and act independently). I'd like to see this back again and I'd love to see more of Pye Parr in the Prog.

Feral & Foe – I praise this every week and this is no different. Class. I think it's really hard to write 'banter' dialogue well - it's one of the things that I find spoils a lot of smaller press comics and books - but Dan Abnett is really on the case here and the designs are immense.

Terror Tale – Nice, but I felt a bit overwritten - the story could have cut out all the bits with other dudes dying off and still had the same impact but felt a little less crowded maybe?

Thistlebone – This certainly escalated in the last couple of weeks. Totally unexpected and beautifully executed, although looking back over the series as a whole it's been the slowest possible of slow builds: I get that this is needed to contrast with the last couple of episodes and it works a lot better as a re-read with a lot of foreshadowing and captures the folk-horror vibe perfectly. This ending also feels like the middle part of a trilogy, so I hope we can get a third series soon and that Thistlebone isn't the Oglaf version.

It is.

Intestinauts the surprise stand-out Thrill for me this week. Something quite exceptional about the way Pye's art on this series can be so busy and full of details without seeming cluttered.

I'm pencilling in a reread of My Life with the Zoom Call Cult for the near future but my first impression is that things just sort of happened without anything really happening and that was intentional.

just read the Thistlenone TPB and at the end it just says 'the end' same as at the end of this episode in the prog

therefore, could there possibly be a book 3 ?

I think that's one of the bits of brilliant about this ending. It leaves the story at a place were there is certainly more that can be done. On the flipside if it ends as is its a very satisfying and fitting end with the context of the genra it sits in.

I hope there is*, am happy if not.

*Actually the danger of doing more is it burns out and get blotted and over used - so happy if there is and its done as well as what's gone before.

I've been doing a huge prog catch up for Reasons, and I have to say it's been really strong of late. Thistlebone has been a joy, story, art and lettering all bringing the awesome. Special call outs for Feral and Foe plus A Penitent Man in Dredd.

Wonderful to see such a strong run in the prog. I mean, it's usually great, right, but this has been particularly good.

My Top 3 for Prog 2232 :)

1st - Thistlebone - really well done final ep of book 2. Pacing of page 1 spot on.
As others have said this would work as a final ep overall if it had to.
2nd - Intestinauts - fun, lots of colour, love all the details in the background too
3rd - Feral and Foe - Big rock excited to 'Facilitate' lol

Great prog overall with Terror Tale on track for a top three for a while but got a bit busy in the ending.
Dredd finished quicker and with a different ending than I was expecting but it was good too
