what a great writer hilary mantel was. readers in this parish may enjoy my favourite novel of hers, fludd - which is a bit like a literary demon nic. i also enjoyed the assassination of margaret thatcher. wonderful writer, gone, from a stroke, far too soon.

well, I take great umbrage at being described as "such a dick". and, according to the latest prog, everyone should probably be watching their heads after dissing me like this ...

"a middling thrill", col? sheesh. the darkness rises.

there has only been one story in ingerland town these last 12 days.
but it wasn't even a story.
the war in ukraine has been woefully under reported for a decade. and so here we are now. ditto belarus, hungary, poland, the fear in the baltics, the new terror in the balkans.
all just a day or so of a drive away.
ignorance is the mind killer, at the very least.

putin mobilising 300,000 reservists and threatening nukes?
that's strange - the bbc had me thinking there that this all finished 12 days ago ...
och well.

so many luddites like me would never go digital. i've tried. but i have come to realise that reading, for me, is hugely about texture, and also the proustian moment of picking up an old prog and remembering where i was and who i was when i first picked it up. reading is multi-sensory and complicated. please, tharg, don't go digital only - think about the vinyl revival.

cheers colin. occasionally misguided, always brilliant, only you could host these tourneys with the required pizzazz. and patience.

now that dante is unofficially the second greatest 2000ad (non dredd) strip of all time, and now that i've dug out the books to be amazed all over again, i am very greedy for some more dante readthrough pods. the last time we heard from our heroes they were heading off in the direction of some whisky distilleries. which is quite the cliffhanger ...

DANTE!!!

i'm voting for the astounding tolstoyan sci-fi epic over the antics of the wiltshire boys. of course.

i mean, c'mon guys!

(it's even a tad better than that apparently nameless, dreddfully puntastic, time-travelling tale of zombies, vampires and the big bad mutant).

javier marias. extraordinary novelist. from pneumonia due to covid.
tomorrow in the battle think on me is just a soaring novel. his spy trilogy - your face tomorrow - truly haunts. basically all his novels (all in fab english) transport and enrich.
he was also the king of redonda. check it out!
i'm genuinely mourning this particular monarch, after his lifetime of service to culture and imagination. he did a good job.

a number of medical emergencies in the coffin queue today. and now we have night and the suddenly autumnal cold.
it's worth it, they say. divine right and so forth innit.
