Prog / Re: Prog 2193 - Nothing To See Here?

Another great prog.

Dredd - I started out as a naysayer, but am now 100% onboard with this summer blockbuster.

FTB - Not my favourite episode, but still enjoying it. Tje black orb bit confused me, but enjoyed Ifans arc this week. Still don't know if he'll see the error of his way and become a part of the team, or if he's about to become the big bad.

Diaboliks - didn't feel like a finale, but only 4 weeks till it's back, so no problems with a "mid season break" as its been a great series thus far.

The Order - I feel like I'm following this now and really enjoying it and it's breakneck pace.

The Out - best thing in the prog again. Love it to bits.

Letters - I agree with all the kissing of the green ring.

Top progging!

Books & Comics / The 77

Apologies if there is a discussion for this elsewhere but I couldn't seem to find one.

Has anyone else read The 77, the "new retro anthology" that recently came to life due to a successful Kickstarter. I bought a copy last week and overall really enjoyed it. It reminded me of Toxic! more than 2000AD and, with all anthologies, was a bit of a mixed bag in places, but there is a lot to enjoy and look forward to more of.

Highlights for me were:

Temporal Anarchy "Punk In Drublic" - a Futureshock with a punk rock twist hosted by a literal cyber-punk named Philthy Luca, which tells the tale of punk band and a magical safety pin. A fun story with fantrastic art. Great gross-out stuff.

V - a futuresport battle arena sees forced combatants need 5 victories to gain their freedom. Great excuse for a big scrap, but still manages to  weave a complete story. Great art too.  I hope future issues are more one-and done battles like this.

Division '77 - looks to be great future-war story in the Rogue Trooper vain.I'm well up for more of this.

The Screaming Hand - A man is protected/cursed by the phantom of a screaming hand. This is fantastic and I am eager for more. MORE!

Angel - I loved the art in this even if the story itself doesn't entirely satisfy, though I get the impression it's chapter one of an opus.

Overall, a great read and well done to everyone who made it happen. Roll on issue 2.

Prog / Re: Prog 2192 - Bearing Down!

I  thought this was a thrill-packed prog!

Dredd - might be my favourite chapter so far of End Of Days thus far. Great action and peril. Plus, an
Super Anderson Angel
?!?

Full Tilt Boogie - Gave me the scrap I was hoping for. Still really enjoying it.

The Diaboliks - Another great chapter. I really like the repeated use of Inspector Sabbatini opening up each chapter, introducing us to whatever mayhem they've caused. The double-spread action pages looked magnificent.

The Order - More running and panicking and horror and I like it. I have been equally as confused as others here as to whats going on, I listened to a Kek-W interview on the Thrillcast this afternoon, and feel a bit more informed now.

The Out - Whilst every other thrill gave us action-aplenty, here we get to see the aftermath. Another great chapter of my current favourite thrill.

A top notch prog!

Oh and doesn't 'Pandora Perfect' look like its got potential in Thrills of the Future.

I 100% agree about how great Pandora Perfect looks. A real classic sounding/looking character. Look forward to reading it.

Dredd - I enjoyed the panic onboard Justice 2 and escalating situation back in the Big Meg. Also, have got QUITE the crush on the Judge stood with Logan at the bottom of page 2. What's her name?
I wasn't a fan of the end reveal, and do worry that this is "all a dream" and Dredds journey through British comics history.

Full Tilt Boogie - Not my favourite episode of this series, but still a series I'm enjoying. I'm just disappointed we didn't get to a honeymoon beach planet, OK??

Diaboliks - Great stuff. I really like the pace to each episode of this. The artwork continues to be gorgeous. Looking forward to the battle to come.

The Order - Roared along and challenged us to keep up, as ever. Really liked the horror of the final page.

The Out - continues to be brilliant and this week has a cameo from George Clooney! Loving it!

I've been very much enjoying all the Dreddverse novellas over the past year and was excited for the release of this one.  The book comprises of three stories set in the Kek-W/Dave Kendall Deadworld-verse and is an utterly grim but gripping read.

Red Mosquito has a noir-ish feel despites its apocalyptic setting as we follow a heavy of a local crimelord who happens to beat up the wrong guy and see his world sprial out of control just as the entire world does.

Bone White Seeds tells dual tales. One half is the diary entries of a teenage survivor. The other is from the viewpoint of a Psi judge who has partaken of the dead fluids.

Grey Flesh Flies continues the tale of the diary writer from book 2, but now from a third-person perspective as she teams up with the surviving, Judge Hawkins.

The Dark Judges themselves make some appearances, but aren't the stars of the show as the books introduce some brilliant new characters that we root for despite knowing they're ultimately doomed.

All three stories are fantastic, with a great pace to them.  Gave me some actual Dark Judge nightmares one night.

I've loved all these novellas, from Judge Dredd Year One through to JUDGES and beyond, so please keep them coming!

I really enjoyed that the Meg had a lot of one-and-done's.

Dredd - I thought Ben Willsher's art was gorgeous and really like the design of Lynch's goggles. Was he a nod to Lando Calrissian's pal Lobot from Empire Strikes Back?
A slight twist to the usual Dredd tale in that the Judges hardly come out on top, and at times are downright bastards. Still, I suppose someone gets a slight comeuppance.

Tales From The Black Museum - A well-paced creepy tale, with lovely art that reminded me a bit of Steve Bisette's Swamp Things.

Devlin Waugh - a nice one-and-done, with gorgeous art, wonderful dialogue and great denouement.

Blunt - not a series I've really beenengaged with, but I thought this was a fantastic finale.  It worked as a single story, letting readers know everyone's relationships before hitting us with a great dramatic moment and nice epilogue. I'm now tempted to go back and give it the full reread.

Lawless - fantastic as ever, with a brilliant bombshell moment and the introduction of new menace. Something of a "breather" episode, but still a brilliant bit of storytelling and incredicle art as always

Dredd - served as a great epilogue to last week's shenanigans, as we see the strain it's clearly putting on Giant.  Then a lovely little speech where he puts no pressure at all on poor Dredd - that close up of Dredd's eye on the bottom of page 2 manages to convey so much! Then we're treated to a bombshell moment that, for me, carried similar weight to recent speech bubbles as "We're fascists" or "I know longer recognise your authority". The Williams droid knows how to deliver dialogue that makes me gasp.  And whilst i've thoroughly enjoyed Colin MacNeils art on the opening chapters, I think Henry Flints art served well to make the whole cast look  that bit more beaten and dishevelled.
A slight "breather" it may have been, but they were some deep breaths ;-)

Full Tilt Boogie - I'm really enjoying this series. I love the art, I enjoy the "zingy" dialogue, the cat n mouse chase has me invested and I love the universe it's building and crew we're flying with. Can't wait to see where we end up next. Honeymoon beach planet?

Diaboliks - Another great episode.  A quick heist to open that ends with a fun punchline of sorts, and then some gangster horror to end leaving me excited for more to come. What more could I ask for in a thrill?

The Order - Had a fantastic sense of urgency and peril.  I agree with someones earlier comment that the final panel left me confused, but generally enjoyed being pulled along by the chaos the story otherwise.

The Out - Continues to be amazing and my current favourite series running in the prog.  Had a feeling of Grey Area, but from the refugee side of the story.  Like Full Tilt Boogie, I just love the universe that's being built here.

A great prog, thats left me excited for next week.

I may have spelt that right.

So atmospheric and evocative of Turner, which I assume was the plan and given Turner is one of my all time favs then I was always going to love it wasn't I.

Turner wasn't the only art historical nod in the prog this week.  The last panel of The Out was definitely a nod to Edouard Manet's "A Bar at the Folies-Bergere.

I've just had a catch up read on progs 2184-2188 (and dug out part one of Full Tilt Boogie in 2130) and am loving the current line-up of thrills, particularly Full Tilt Boogie and The Out.  The Diaboliks won it for me this week though.  The first few pages had me chortling.

Also, in non-prog prog-related news, I'm thoroughly enjoying the Fall Of Deadword novella omnibus by Matthew Smith but only midway through. Grpping but grim thus far.

Cheers! I'm desperate to discuss this weeks letters. The one from the American fella was hilarious. :-)

Ey up!

For some reason I can leave replies and start new topics on here EXCEPT for the "Spolers" bit where reviews for Prog and Meg are.  I would like to be able to give my (100% factually correct!) opinion on the Galaxy's Greatest and her MEGnificent sister mag, but am unable to do so.

Have I inadvertently been blocked/banned?  I don't recall writing anything offensive to warrant it.
Or is this section for only the most devout Squaxx who still hurl their spacespinners around the garden? (I did have a long walk in the Thrill-less wilderness between 1997 and 2010 so think I've made Tharg's MekQuake list)
Or is it merely a bug in the system?

I don't have any 2000ad reading friends (or any friends) so would love to be able to contribute to conversations about the weekly prog.

Watched a fun show on Netflix called DIABLERO.  It's a Mexican show about a gang of demon hunters and it's ace (in my humble opinion).  If you like "Cabbalistics Inc" (currently LOVING my first read through of that), then I think you'll enjoy DIABLERO.... it's already got a confirmed 2nd season so it MUST be good, right?

(worth pointing out that I have a crush on the character of Nancy and this may bias my opinion of the aforementioned show)

There are many wonderful things on Netflix, but for some reason I am watching Death In Paradise.  I know it's shit and I can't stop.  Send help.

Matt Groenig's Disenchantment was very enjoyable, though, and for all its faults and lack of imagination, I did like badly-dubbed German post-apocalyptic drama The Rain, and Indian crime thriller Sacred Games.
Old enough to remember being hungover and watching Diagnosis Murder and Monk, I found The Good Cop reassuringly familiar, as was the rather brief The Indian Detective (featuring The Shat as a ruddy-faced drug kingpin!).  Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is far more enjoyable than it should be, Glow is fantastic 80s-themed sleeze & cheese, The Break With Michelle Wolf was fun while it lasted, and Ozark is good and would be much better if you had the option to skip all the bits with the boring and dreadful kids, but I found it to be a really good background watch while working.

Anime is a bit of a marmite thing but if you can bear it, you could do worse than One Punch Man or Knights of Sidonia.  I did also enjoy the Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters trilogy.  Do not watch Castlevania, it is utter fucking pish and you will only encourage them to make more.

I too am bemused by the success of Castlevania.  Last couple of episodes of season 2 were OK once some action kicked in.  Up until then it was nowt but depressed Dracula and long, boring talks in a library.
One Punch Man is the BEST!
