Help! / Re: Ron Smith
30 August, 2007, 06:50:34 PM
Mm. A one-off from Smith would be fab. Frankly, it's easy to dismiss he guy, since his style wasn't as dynamic and vibrant as some other artists. However, when you read through the Case Files, it's apparent just how many important Judge Dredd stories he illustrated, and what a good, solid job he did on Dredd (not least the Graveyard Shift, which remains one of my all-time favourite Dredds).

I think he got stuffed with a load of really ropey scripts, and so some might have forgotten just how instrumental the guy was during Dredd's early years. (Then again, Chronos Carnival was just about bearable solely because of the artworkâ??certainly, I never really cared for the scripts.)

"yet so wrong about the gap between "2000" and "AD"?"

Having a space there is the correct (if informal) written form.

Well, the Nemesis collections are supposedly going to be complete and include everything. The photo strips are dire, but I'd rather have them in than out. Frankly, I'm surprised you're saying otherwise, what with your comments about other Rebellion collections that are less-than-complete.

I agree. The new logo's OK, but it lacks personality and individuality. Still, it's better than the previous one. Nice cover, too.

:: Was Red razors that bad?

It's an odd one, really. 70 per cent or so of the first run is actually pretty good, apart from the ill-advised 'satire' on a well-known children's cartoon. The second series was utterly dire, bar the artwork, not least because [spoiler space]

the defrosted Judge Dredd just acted like a dick, and Millar felt the need to unnecessarily kill off the most compelling character in the series, leaving behind a somewhat empty and hollow shell.

Film & TV / Re: Alien3 Special Editions..........

More to the point, without the machine-gun scene, Aliens simply doesn't make any sense. The idea is that there's one alien for each colonist, but in the theatrical release, there are scant few aliens left at the end. From an overall continuity standpoint, that's because most of them were mown down by machine-gun fire, but in the original release, that doesn't happen.

"So, you never read Chronos Carnival, then?"

Frankly, I think I'd prefer to read Dry Run to the current Satanus story in the Megâ??it's really that bad. Such a contrast to the recent Sláine stuff (which I just enjoyed re-reading via the hardback trades).

Mm. The 'pantomime Bond' that had naff-all to do with the original novels. Frankly, I was glad to see Casino Royale move in a totally different direction.

I thoughtâ??despite its  many flawsâ??that the new Bond film pissed all over the Bourne ones, and especially the wobbly camera sequel.

Apparently, Crisis has naff-all value these days. I've had an ad up on this site for a while (I'm 'thinning' my 2000 AD and comics/graphic novels collection in general right now), and have had zero interest. I'm guessing that's also going to be the case with a lot of the 2000 AD stuff.

:: I've not even got book 1 yet.

Rectify that immediately, sir, or we'll be forced to come round your house and beat you senseless with spare hardback copies of The Red Seas.

The Strontium Dog collections are probably the best ones Rebellion has put out, period.

There's still one book no-one appears to have noticed, for some reason.

Also, aren't the scripts sent out specifically designed to flag or highlight certain strengths and weaknesses in potential artists? In other words, it's not just some random script that's sent out, but one that enables the editorial team (well, Matt these days) to rapidly figure out if someone will be able to cut it in a range of strips.

With Cabs, it's worth itâ??it's one of the few true classics to appear over the past few years, and the books are worth every penny.
