Now I wonder if Hollywood will make a movie of his charitable act and when they do will he approve...

Well one thing you have to give Mark Millar is he's really trying to push the profile of comics in the UK. His latest venture, which has been talked about for a while now is KaPow Comic Con London. Seems like its trying to hark back to the old UKCAC days and add a bit of the San Deigo movie schpazz to the whole affair.

I'm defo asking for a weekend pass from my lovely wife to attend this one.

Well had a play with this and thought I'd try to do a list of 30, which I have kinda with a little addition at the end by way of a cheat. I've also only gone for none 2000ad stuff only. There's a whole host of stuff that you kinda look at and think, I really should be trying this stuff and I've not read that will look like glaring omissions. Brace yourself here I go in no order what so ever:

Jack Kirby's Fourth World              Jack Kirby's 2001: A Space Odyssey (series)
Morrison's Animal Man                   Morrison's JLA
Morrison's Seven Soldiers               Final Crisis (including Superman Beyond)
Zot!                                               Asterix
Blueberry                                      Charley's War
Eisner's Spirit                                Contract with God
Wednesday Comics                       Cerebus (first 219 issues)
Hate                                              Eddie Campbell's Deadface / Bacchus
Flaming Carrot                               Bone
Calvin and Hobbes                         Liberty Meadows
Lee Ditko Spiderman                      Batlash (Sergio Aragonés and Nick Cardy stuff)
Garth Ennis' 2nd World War stuff     Matt Wagner's Trinity
X-Force/ X- Static                           Skreemer
Beanworld                                     Nocenti Daredevil
Metamorpho (first series)                Daredevil Born Again

The other stuff I've got is stuff that would make my top 30 list of comics ahead of many of these fella's but are so personal that I suspect they aren't things I'd recommend to everyone.

Wally West Flash series (all 230 issues... well last 5 aside maybe!), 52, Gail Simone's Secret Six, Matt Wagner's Zorro, Jonah Hex (current), Roger Stern's Avengers, Kurt Busiek Avengers.

Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

Just finished the final 'Jack Kirby's Fourth World' omnibus this weekend. And ok so volume 4 isn't up to the standard of the previous three but still the whole collection is an absolute masterpiece.

Where is that 'Must read comics' thread?

Oh and Tordelback is certainly right about Michael Chabon's 'Yiddish Policeman's Union' great stuff. Need I mention how good 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay'is as well?

Well I caught up with my Bat books this week having got four in my pull list on Saturday and I have to say I was mighty impressed and the whole line, or at least those that I'm reading are on very good form. Got two Morrison's (The Return and Inc. no.1) and both were as fantastic as you'd expect. Batman Inc. being particularly good. Paul Cornell's first issue of 'Batman and Robin' was a fun read even if the art wasn't really to my tastes.

Even amongst the work of two of my favourite writers the stand out however was Scott Snyder, Jock and Francesco Francavilla's Detective 871. What a brilliant bit of comics that was. Don't know Scott Snyder's work except that it has a very good reputation but he writes a wonderful Dick Grayson Batman.

If the Bat franchise continues like this they can bring out as many as they like its blooming good comics.

Welcome aboard and have fun.

As for the images, as I'm intrigued to see them. Best bet is to load them to something like Flicker or the like and copy the url into the image button (bottom left button).

There's a little more here if you scroll down

Film & TV / Valley of Gwangi on today
28 November, 2010, 07:39:04 AM
If you have Freeview and have never seen it (or indeed if you have) the rather wonderful 1969 'Valley of Gwangi' is on Film 4 at 11am. Ray Harryhausen dinosaurs vs cowboys... if only someone had realised what a great idea for a comic strip that would have made...

Quote from: Colin_YNWA on 26 November, 2010, 03:01:37 PMHe's not done that much 'worthy' stuff (as Emperor put it) that tickles the fringes of the 'real' mainstream in the way that many on that list do. He by and large does interesting and wonderfully written 'comics' mainstream stuff that us nerds love but doesn't always get the attention it deserves outside.

Arkham Asylum?  From publication it's been a notable Batman work and has spun off a multi-million dollar videogame across all the major current gen consoles.  I don't think you can argue these books have to be mainstream to be included on the list either - Rising Stars is the definition of a flash in the pan and hasn't been on the radar for years, while Morrison's Animal Man run is still being plundered by flavor of the month writers nearly a quarter century after it was first published.

Oh yeah actually Arkham Asylum is probably a good exception.

I agree the list isn't entirely things that have touched the mainstream but on the whole it is. The other stuff seems to be the authors favourites, which in this type of list is always going to happen.

I remember reading something maybe a year ago about plans for a complete new English Corto Maltese, but nothing since.

I'd bloody love to see this happen. This and the Blueberry stuff is impossible to get hold of in English... of course meaning I should dramatically improve my French but that's even more unlikely to happen.

To be honest much the same as last week, well I enjoyed the Terror Tale more than last weeks Future Shock, though the end was pretty telegraphed...

...as you were really.

Great cover mind.
